What Makes a Strong EE Research Question?
The Extended Essay (EE) is the crown jewel of the IB Core: a 4,000-word independent research paper that demands you pose and answer a question nobody has asked in quite your way. But here is the secret most students learn too late: the research question IS the essay. Get it right and the 4,000 words write themselves. Get it wrong and you will spend months chasing a topic that goes nowhere.
According to the IB EE Guide (first assessment 2018), a good research question must be specific, arguable, and researchable within 4,000 words. It cannot be a yes/no question. It cannot be a factual report. It must invite analysis, interpretation, and critical engagement with sources.
The Four Types of EE Research Questions
Not all research questions are created equal. IB examiners see four distinct patterns, and knowing which one fits your subject is half the battle. Below is a comparison of the four archetypes, with real examples from each category:
并不是所有研究问题都生而平等。IB 考官通常看到四种不同的模式,了解哪一种适合你的学科就已经赢了一半。以下是四种类型的对比分析,每种都附有真实案例:
Type 1: Analytical 分析型
Breaks a phenomenon into components and examines how they relate. Best for: Languages, Literature, History, Philosophy.
Example: "To what extent does Orwell use animal symbolism in Animal Farm to construct a critique of totalitarianism?"
✅ Strengths: Clear scope, manageable sources
⚠️ Risk: Can become descriptive if not pushed toward interpretation
Type 2: Argumentative 论证型
Takes a stance and defends it with evidence. Best for: Economics, Global Politics, Philosophy, History.
Example: "Should developing countries prioritize economic growth over environmental protection in their industrialization strategies?"
✅ Strengths: Naturally analytical, higher-order thinking
⚠️ Risk: May lack balance if counterarguments are weak
Type 3: Comparative 比较型
Compares two or more cases, texts, or approaches. Best for: Literature, History, Economics, World Studies.
Example: "How do China and India differ in their approaches to renewable energy adoption, and what explains these differences?"
✅ Strengths: Built-in structure, rich analytical potential
⚠️ Risk: Superficial comparison if cases are too broad
Type 4: Investigative 探究型
Designs and conducts a scientific investigation. Best for: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ESS, DT.
Example: "How does varying the concentration of NaCl (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%) affect the rate of electrolysis of water, as measured by hydrogen gas volume produced?"
✅ Strengths: Empirical data, replicable
⚠️ Risk: Equipment limitations, data vs word count balance
The Formulation Framework: 7 Steps to a Killer RQ
The biggest mistake students make is treating the research question as a one-shot effort -- write it once and never change it. In reality, the RQ is a living document that should be refined at least three times: after initial research, after the first draft, and after supervisor feedback. Here is a systematic framework:
学生最大的错误是把研究问题当成一次性工作——写一次就不再改了。实际上,研究问题是一个不断迭代的活文档,至少应该精炼三次:初步调研后、第一稿完成后、导师反馈之后。以下是一个系统化的框架:
Step 1: Subject + Broad Area — Pick your subject (e.g., Biology) and a broad area you genuinely care about (e.g., plant growth).
Step 2: Narrow with a Variable — Introduce a specific variable or angle. "The effect of light wavelength on plant growth."
Step 3: Add Measurability — How will you measure it? "As measured by stem elongation over 14 days."
Step 4: Frame as a Question — "To what extent does varying light wavelength (red, blue, green, white) affect the growth rate of Phaseolus vulgaris?"
Step 5: Scope Check — Is this doable in 4,000 words with accessible equipment?
Step 6: Command Term Audit — Does the question demand analysis and evaluation, not just description? Replace "describe" with "to what extent," "how," or "evaluate."
Step 7: The Supervisor Test — Read it to your supervisor. If they say "that sounds interesting, tell me more," you have a winner. If they say "hmm, that is quite broad," go back to Step 2.
Subject-Specific RQ Strategies
Different IB subjects demand fundamentally different kinds of questions. The table below breaks down what each subject group expects and where students most often go wrong:
不同的 IB 学科对研究问题有根本不同的要求。以下分析每个学科组的期望以及学生最容易出错的地方:
Group 1: Studies in Language & Literature
Must engage with literary features (imagery, narrative voice, structure) in a primary text. Cannot be a book report. Category 1 (single work) is safest; Category 2 (comparative) needs explicit basis for comparison.
Pitfall: "What are the themes in The Great Gatsby?" — too broad, descriptive. Instead: "How does Fitzgerald use the motif of the green light to develop his critique of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby?"
Group 3: Individuals & Societies
Economics: must involve real data and economic theory. History: primary sources are non-negotiable. Psychology: ethical guidelines restrict what you can study with human participants.
Pitfall: "Is globalization good or bad?" — normative, unanswerable in 4,000 words. Instead: "To what extent has trade liberalization under NAFTA reduced income inequality in Mexico between 1994 and 2018?"
Group 4: Sciences
Must be a genuine experiment with an independent variable, dependent variable, and controlled variables. The RQ must specify exactly what you are measuring and changing. Safety and ethical approval required before data collection.
Pitfall: "How does temperature affect enzyme activity?" — too vague. Which enzyme? What temperature range? How measured? Instead: "How does temperature (20-60 Celsius) affect the rate of catalase-mediated decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, as measured by oxygen gas volume produced per minute?"
Group 5: Mathematics
The RQ must go beyond syllabus content. Pure math papers need rigor and proofs; applied math papers need real-world data and modeling. Avoid topics where the answer is already known.
Pitfall: "What is the golden ratio?" — this is an encyclopedia entry, not an EE. Instead: "To what extent can the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio be used to model the spiral growth patterns observed in Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed heads?"
Criterion A: Focus and Method — The RQ is Graded Directly 评分标准A:研究问题直接影响评分
Criterion A is worth 6 marks out of 34 (about 18% of your total EE grade), and it explicitly evaluates your research question alongside your methodology. Examiners look at three things: whether the RQ is clearly stated in the introduction, whether it is appropriately narrow and focused, and whether your methodology actually answers the question you posed.
A common tragedy: a student writes a brilliant 3,500-word analysis but the RQ in the introduction differs subtly from the question the body of the essay actually addresses. This mismatch costs at least 2 marks on Criterion A. Always verify on the final draft that your introduction's RQ is an exact word-for-word match with what the essay answers.
The RQ Evolution Timeline: From Broad to Sharp
Every high-scoring EE begins with a terrible first draft of a research question. The difference between a C and an A is how many times you are willing to refine it. Here is what the evolution typically looks like in a Group 3 (Economics) EE:
每一篇高分 EE 都始于一个糟糕的研究问题初稿。C 和 A 的区别就在于你愿意精炼多少次。以下是一个 Group 3(经济学)EE 中典型的研究问题进化过程:
Version 1 (Week 1): "What is inflation?" ❌ Too broad, descriptive, not a research question
Version 2 (Week 2): "How does inflation affect economic growth?" ❌ Still too broad, no specificity
Version 3 (Week 3): "How does inflation affect economic growth in developing countries?" ⚠️ Better but still lacks focus and measurability
Version 4 (Week 4): "To what extent has inflation targeting by the central bank affected GDP growth in Brazil between 1999 and 2019?" ✅ Specific country, timeframe, measurable variable, analytical command term
Version 5 (Final, Week 6): "To what extent has the adoption of inflation targeting (1999) by the Banco Central do Brasil contributed to GDP per capita growth in Brazil between 2000 and 2020, compared to the pre-targeting period (1990-1998)?" ✅ Comparative framework, clear counterfactual, well-scoped
Three Deadly Sins of EE Research Questions
Based on examiner reports from the past three examination sessions, here are the three most common RQ mistakes that cap an otherwise strong EE at a C or D:
根据最近三场考试的考官报告,以下是三个最常见的研究问题错误,它们会把本该得 A 的论文限制在 C 或 D:
Sin 1: The Wikipedia Question
Questions that can be answered by reading a Wikipedia article. "What were the causes of World War I?" This is a factual report, not an analytical essay. You cannot get above a D with a descriptive question.
Sin 2: The Universe Question
Questions so vast they would require a PhD thesis. "How has globalization affected culture worldwide?" No amount of editing can save an EE with a question this broad. You must narrow to a specific place, time, or case.
Sin 3: The Mismatch Question
The RQ says one thing, the essay answers another. This happens when students refine their thinking during writing but forget to update the formal question on page 1. The examiner reads the RQ as a promise -- if the essay breaks that promise, marks plummet.
TOK Connection: The Research Question as a Knowledge Claim TOK
A sophisticated EE research question implicitly engages with Theory of Knowledge concerns. Ask yourself: what ways of knowing (reason, sense perception, language, emotion) does my RQ rely on? What areas of knowledge does it traverse? An EE in History that acknowledges the limitations of historical sources shows TOK awareness. An EE in Natural Sciences that discusses the reliability of measurement instruments does the same.
Examiners do not formally grade TOK integration in the EE, but TOK-aware questions tend to produce richer, more nuanced analyses that score higher across all criteria -- especially Criterion D (Critical Thinking).
Quick Checklist: Is Your RQ Ready?
☐ Does the RQ begin with a command term that demands analysis ("To what extent," "How," "Evaluate") rather than description ("What," "Describe")?
☐ Is the scope narrow enough to be thoroughly explored in 4,000 words? Can you name your specific case, text, time period, or variable?
☐ Are sufficient primary and secondary sources accessible? Can you actually get the data, texts, or experimental equipment you need?
☐ Is the question genuinely arguable (multiple defensible positions exist) rather than factual (one correct answer exists)?
☐ Does the question interest you enough to sustain 40+ hours of work? If you are already bored, pick something else now.
☐ Does the RQ in your introduction match -- word for word -- the question your essay actually answers?
Final Word: The RQ is a Compass, Not a Cage
The best EE students treat their research question as a compass that keeps them oriented, not a cage that prevents exploration. It is perfectly normal -- and often smart -- to refine your RQ multiple times as your research deepens. What matters is that the final version is sharp, specific, and clearly visible from the first page of your essay. The examiner should be able to read your RQ and immediately understand exactly what kind of argument is coming.
Start broad, narrow ruthlessly, and never stop asking: "Is this a question worth 4,000 words of my life?" Because the answer to that question is the only one that really matters.
