The mole is the SI unit for amount of substance. One mole contains exactly 6.022 × 10²³ elementary entities — this is Avogadro's number, arguably the most important constant in chemistry. The relationship between mass, molar mass, and number of moles is expressed as n = m / M, where n is the number of moles, m is mass in grams, and M is molar mass in g mol⁻¹. You must be fluent converting between grams, moles, and number of particles — this is tested in both Paper 1 multiple choice and Paper 2 structured questions. A common pitfall: confusing the mass of one molecule (in atomic mass units, u) with the mass of one mole (in grams). They are numerically equal but conceptually very different. For example, one H₂O molecule has a mass of approximately 18 u, while one mole of H₂O has a mass of 18 g. The mole bridges the microscopic world of atoms with the macroscopic world we can measure in a lab. 🧪 Empirical and Molecular Formulas
The empirical formula gives the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. The molecular formula is a multiple of the empirical formula. For instance, glucose has a molecular formula of C₆H₁₂O₆ but an empirical formula of CH₂O. IB exam questions often present combustion analysis data or percentage composition by mass, then ask you to determine the empirical formula first, and subsequently use the molar mass to find the molecular formula. The workflow: (1) convert mass or percentage to moles for each element, (2) divide all mole values by the smallest to get the simplest ratio, (3) round to the nearest whole number (or multiply by a small integer if ratios are like 1.5 or 1.33), (4) calculate the empirical formula mass, (5) divide the given molar mass by the empirical formula mass to find the multiplier, (6) multiply the subscripts to get the molecular formula. This six-step process is a guaranteed question on every IB Chemistry exam. ⚖️ Balancing Equations and Mole Ratios
A balanced chemical equation is the starting point for every stoichiometric calculation. The coefficients in a balanced equation tell you the mole ratio in which reactants combine and products form. For example, 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O means 2 moles of H₂ react with 1 mole of O₂ to produce 2 moles of H₂O. The mole ratio H₂ : O₂ : H₂O is 2 : 1 : 2. IB examiners love to test whether you can extract the correct mole ratio from an equation and apply it to calculate unknown quantities. Remember: state symbols (s, l, g, aq) must be included for full marks in Paper 2. HL students must also write ionic equations where appropriate, cancelling spectator ions. A balanced ionic equation shows only the species that actually change during the reaction, which is often what the stoichiometry question is really about. ⚖️ Limiting and Excess Reagents
In any real chemical reaction, one reactant runs out before the others. The limiting reagent is the reactant that is completely consumed first and therefore determines the maximum amount of product that can form. The other reactants are present in excess. The procedure to identify the limiting reagent is straightforward: (1) calculate the number of moles of each reactant, (2) divide each by its stoichiometric coefficient from the balanced equation, (3) the reactant with the smallest resulting ratio is the limiting reagent. This is a classic IB exam trap: students frequently assume the reactant present in the smallest mass is limiting. Do not fall for this — you must always compare moles, not masses. Once the limiting reagent is identified, all subsequent calculations (theoretical yield, excess remaining) are based on it. 📊 Theoretical and Percentage Yield
Theoretical yield is the maximum mass of product that can be obtained, calculated from the limiting reagent using mole ratios and molar masses. Actual yield is the mass you actually obtain from an experiment — it is always less than or equal to the theoretical yield. Percentage yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100%. IB expects you to explain why yields are typically below 100%: the reaction may not go to completion, side reactions produce unwanted by-products, and there are physical losses during filtration, transfer, recrystallisation, and drying. In rare cases, a yield above 100% indicates contamination or incomplete drying of the product. HL students should also understand atom economy = (molar mass of desired product / sum of molar masses of all reactants) × 100%, a green chemistry metric that evaluates how efficiently reactant atoms are incorporated into the desired product.
At STP (standard temperature and pressure: 273 K, 100 kPa as defined by IUPAC and used by IB), one mole of any ideal gas occupies 22.7 dm³. This molar volume allows direct conversion between gas volume and moles: n = V / 22.7. Combined with the ideal gas equation PV = nRT (HL only, R = 8.31 J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹), gas stoichiometry problems can link volume, pressure, temperature, and moles. A typical question: "What volume of CO₂ is produced at 25 °C and 98 kPa when 5.0 g of CaCO₃ decomposes?" You would: (1) calculate moles of CaCO₃, (2) use mole ratio to find moles of CO₂, (3) apply PV = nRT with T in Kelvin (298 K) to find the volume. Note: IB defines STP as 273 K and 100 kPa, not the older standard of 273 K and 101.3 kPa (1 atm) — using the wrong pressure will cost you marks. 在STP(标准温度和压强:273 K, 100 kPa,IUPAC定义,IB采用)下,1摩尔任何理想气体的体积为22.7 dm³。 💧 Solution Stoichiometry and Titration
Concentration c = moles of solute / volume of solution (dm³). The standard unit is mol dm⁻³. The dilution formula c₁V₁ = c₂V₂ is essential when preparing solutions of a desired concentration from a stock solution. Titration problems are the ultimate test of solution stoichiometry: they require you to combine the balanced equation, the mole ratio, the concentration formula, and careful unit conversions. The classic workflow for an acid-base titration: (1) write the balanced equation, (2) calculate moles of the known solution (c × V), (3) use mole ratio to find moles of the unknown, (4) calculate concentration or mass of the unknown. Remember: volume must be in dm³, so divide cm³ by 1000. Back titration (HL extension) is used when direct titration is impractical — the sample is reacted with a known excess of reagent, then the unreacted excess is titrated to back-calculate the original amount. This technique is commonly applied to insoluble substances like calcium carbonate in eggshells or antacid tablets.
1. Always balance the equation first. Every answer downstream depends on a correctly balanced equation. If your equation is wrong, you lose all subsequent marks even if your method is perfect.
2. Convert everything to moles. The mole is your universal currency in stoichiometry. Convert masses, gas volumes, and solution concentrations to moles before applying any mole ratio.
3. Watch your significant figures. IB penalises incorrect significant figures. Match the least precise measurement in your data. Answers with too many digits suggest you don't understand measurement uncertainty.
4. Show all working. Write n = m/M, then substitute, then calculate. IB examiners award method marks (ECF — error carried forward) even if your final answer is wrong. Blank spaces earn nothing. Recommended Study Tool
