1. What is the Endocrine System? |
The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release hormones directly into the bloodstream. These chemical messengers travel to target organs, where they trigger specific, long-lasting effects. Unlike the nervous system, which uses electrical impulses for rapid, short-term changes, the endocrine system brings about slower but more prolonged responses.
- Endocrine glands are ductless and secrete hormones into the blood. |
- Hormones are chemical messengers that affect cells with the appropriate receptors. |
- Responses are slower to start but last longer than nerve impulses. |
- Examples of processes controlled include growth, metabolism, reproduction and homeostasis. |
2. Comparing Nervous and Endocrine Control |
It is vital to distinguish between these two communication systems. While both coordinate body functions, they do so using different mechanisms, speeds and durations.
| Feature | Nervous System | Endocrine System |
| Signal type | Electrical impulses | Chemical hormones |
| Transmission route | Nerve cells (neurones) | Bloodstream |
| Speed | Very rapid (milliseconds) | Slower (seconds to days) |
| Duration of effect | Short-term (stops quickly) | Long-lasting |
| Target | Specific cells or muscles | Cells with specific receptors |
Exam tip: when asked to compare the two, always refer to speed, nature of the signal and duration of response. |
3. Major Endocrine Glands and Their Hormones |
The IGCSE AQA specification focuses on the pituitary gland, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes. You must know their hormones and key functions.
IGCSE AQA
- Pituitary gland: often called the 'master gland'. It secretes ADH (controls water balance), FSH and LH (reproduction) and growth hormone. 分泌 ADH(控制水分平衡)、FSH 和 LH(生殖)以及生长激素。
- Thyroid: produces thyroxine, which controls metabolic rate and body temperature. |
- Pancreas: produces insulin and glucagon, key hormones for blood glucose regulation. |
- Adrenal glands: produce adrenaline, involved in the fight-or-flight response. |
- Ovaries: produce oestrogen, responsible for female secondary sexual characteristics and menstrual cycle regulation. |
- Testes: produce testosterone, responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics and sperm production. |
All these hormones travel in the plasma to their target cells, where they bind to specific receptors and trigger a response. |
4. The Pituitary Gland and Water Balance (ADH) | 垂体与水分平衡(抗利尿激素 ADH)
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is released by the pituitary gland when the blood becomes too concentrated. It causes the kidneys to reabsorb more water, producing a smaller volume of more concentrated urine. This is a classic negative feedback loop.
- Receptors in the hypothalamus detect blood water concentration. |
- If blood is too concentrated, the pituitary releases more ADH.
- ADH signals the collecting ducts of the kidney to become more permeable to water. | ADH
- More water is reabsorbed into the blood, normalising the concentration. |
- If blood is too dilute, ADH release decreases, so less water is reabsorbed and more urine is excreted.
This process maintains homeostasis and is a favourite exam topic. Diagrams of the nephron and collecting duct are often required. |
5. Negative Feedback |
Hormonal systems are usually regulated by negative feedback, a mechanism that reverses a change to keep conditions within a narrow range. Both thyroxine levels and blood glucose levels are controlled in this way.
General negative feedback loop: |
Stimulus → Receptor → Control centre → Effector → Response → Reversal of stimulus
In the endocrine system, the control centre is often the pituitary gland or pancreas, and the effectors are glands that alter hormone release. |
Example: when body temperature drops, the thyroid releases more thyroxine, which increases metabolic rate and generates heat. Once temperature returns to normal, thyroxine secretion decreases.
6. Control of Blood Glucose – Key Players |
The pancreas monitors blood glucose levels and secretes two hormones: insulin and glucagon. They act antagonistically to maintain glucose at around 90 mg per 100 cm³ of blood.
- Insulin: released when blood glucose is too high. It stimulates the liver and muscle cells to convert glucose into glycogen for storage. |
- Glucagon: released when blood glucose is too low. It stimulates the liver to break down glycogen into glucose and release it into the blood. |
The liver plays a central role in this homeostasis. The conversion processes are: | 肝脏在这一稳态中起核心作用。
Glucose → Glycogen (glycogenesis) ; Glycogen → Glucose (glycogenolysis)
7. Blood Glucose Regulation – Full Negative Feedback Loop |
Let's sequence the events after a high-carbohydrate meal and after fasting. This is a common six-mark question.
After eating (hyperglycaemia):
- Blood glucose level rises above normal. |
- The pancreas detects the increase and beta cells secrete insulin into the blood. |
- Insulin travels to the liver and muscles and stimulates cells to take up glucose. |
- Glucose is converted into glycogen for storage. |
- Blood glucose level falls back to normal. |
- Insulin secretion stops (negative feedback). |
After fasting (hypoglycaemia):
- Blood glucose level drops below normal. |
- Pancreas detects the decrease and alpha cells secrete glucagon. |
- Glucagon acts on the liver, stimulating glycogenolysis. |
- Glucose is released into the blood. |
- Blood glucose level rises back to normal. |
- Glucagon secretion decreases. |
You must use correct terminology: glycogenolysis, not just 'break down glycogen'. |
8. Type 1 Diabetes and Insulin Therapy | 1
Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. This results in uncontrolled high blood glucose levels after meals. It is typically diagnosed in childhood or adolescence and is not linked to lifestyle.
- Symptoms: frequent urination, excessive thirst, tiredness, weight loss. |
- If untreated, glucose appears in the urine and can lead to coma. |
- Treatment: regular injections of insulin, usually before meals. |
- Insulin is now often produced by genetically engineered bacteria (human insulin). |
Insulin cannot be taken as a pill because it is a protein and would be digested in the stomach. |
Students should also be aware that a balanced diet and monitoring carbohydrate intake are crucial for managing the condition. |
9. Adrenaline – The Fight-or-Flight Hormone |
Adrenaline is produced by the adrenal glands in times of fear or stress. It rapidly prepares the body for intense physical action. Unlike the slow negative feedback of thyroxine, adrenaline acts quickly and is controlled directly by the nervous system.
- Adrenal glands are located on top of the kidneys. |
- Adrenaline increases heart rate and breathing rate. |
- It triggers the liver to break down glycogen into glucose for extra energy. |
- It dilates pupils and diverts blood flow away from the skin and digestive system to the muscles. |
These changes are all due to the 'adrenaline rush' and maximise oxygen and glucose delivery to skeletal muscles, enabling either fight or flight. |
10. Thyroxine and Metabolic Rate |
Thyroxine is released by the thyroid gland in the neck. It regulates the basal metabolic rate – the speed at which chemical reactions occur in the body. It is essential for normal growth and development.
- Negative feedback system: low thyroxine levels stimulate the pituitary to release TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which causes the thyroid to release more thyroxine. High thyroxine inhibits TSH release.
- Thyroxine contains iodine; iodine deficiency can cause goitre (swelling of the thyroid). |
- It affects heart rate, temperature regulation and the rate of protein synthesis. |
Graphs of thyroxine concentration against time in a person with normal feedback show a stable level, while disruption reveals the importance of negative feedback.
11. Key Hormones in Reproduction |
The menstrual cycle is a prime example of hormonal coordination. FSH, oestrogen, LH and progesterone interact to control ovulation and the preparation of the uterus lining.
| Hormone | Gland | Role |
| FSH | Pituitary | Stimulates follicle development and oestrogen secretion |
| Oestrogen | Ovaries | Repairs uterus lining; inhibits FSH, stimulates LH surge |
| LH | Pituitary | Triggers ovulation; stimulates progesterone secretion |
| Progesterone | Corpus luteum (ovary) | Maintains uterus lining; inhibits FSH and LH |
Feedback loops between these hormones are crucial, particularly the positive feedback of oestrogen on LH (leading to the LH surge) and the negative feedback of progesterone on FSH.
12. Exam Skills and Common Misconceptions |
Many students confuse the endocrine system with the nervous system. Remember: hormones travel in blood, act slowly and have prolonged effects. Nerve impulses are electrical and faster.
- Always use the term 'target organ' when referring to the end point of a hormone. |
- Do not say insulin lowers blood glucose; it actually stimulates the conversion of glucose to glycogen, which results in a lower blood glucose. |
- Negative feedback means the corrective response brings the level back to the set point and then stops – it does not overshoot constantly. |
- In the adrenaline response, pupils dilate (not contract) to let in more light for better vision. |
- For diabetes, specify 'Type 1' when mentioning failed insulin production; be aware of Type 2 but it is not usually required for this specification at IGCSE.
Prepare to interpret graphs showing hormone levels over time and describe the events at each stage. Labelling diagrams of the glands is also common. |
