IB Biology is one of the most popular Group 4 subjects, but it is also famously challenging. The Core syllabus (topics 1 through 6) accounts for 80 teaching hours and forms the backbone of both SL and HL papers. Many students struggle not because they do not understand the concepts, but because they lack a systematic approach to revision and exam technique. This article walks you through the highest-yield techniques for each Core topic, from Cell Biology to Human Physiology.
Key Insight
The IB Biology exam rewards precision, not breadth. You do not need to memorize every detail in the textbook. You need to master the command terms, know exactly what each question type demands, and connect concepts across topics.
Topic 1: Cell Biology
Cell Biology is the foundation of everything that follows. The most common mistake students make is treating it as a pure memorization unit. In reality, the exam questions demand application and analysis: you will be asked to interpret electron micrographs, calculate magnification, and explain how structure relates to function.
The stem cell question appears in nearly every exam cycle. You must be able to distinguish between totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent, and unipotent stem cells with concrete examples. Totipotent cells (e.g., early embryo cells up to the 8-cell stage) can differentiate into any cell type including placental tissue. Pluripotent cells (e.g., inner cell mass of blastocyst) can become any cell type in the body but not placental tissue. Multipotent cells (e.g., hematopoietic stem cells in bone marrow) can differentiate into a limited range of cells within a specific lineage.
For membrane transport, do not just list the types. Draw a comparison table in your mind: simple diffusion (passive, small non-polar molecules, no protein needed), facilitated diffusion (passive, uses channel or carrier proteins, e.g., glucose via GLUT), active transport (requires ATP, against concentration gradient, e.g., Na+/K+ pump), and endocytosis/exocytosis (bulk transport, membrane vesicle formation). The exam will ask you to justify which mechanism applies to a specific scenario.
This is where many students start losing points. Molecular biology questions are process-heavy: DNA replication, transcription, and translation each have specific enzyme names, directionality, and checkpoints that you must sequence correctly. A foolproof approach is to draw a flowchart for each process and annotate every enzyme at its exact point of action.
DNA replication: helicase unwinds the double helix at the replication fork. Single-strand binding proteins keep the strands apart. DNA gyrase (topoisomerase) relieves supercoiling ahead of the fork. Primase synthesizes RNA primers. DNA polymerase III adds nucleotides in the 5' to 3' direction on the leading strand continuously, and on the lagging strand in Okazaki fragments. DNA polymerase I replaces RNA primers with DNA. DNA ligase seals the gaps. The exam favorite: explaining why the lagging strand is synthesized discontinuously -- because DNA polymerase III can only add nucleotides to the 3' end, and the lagging strand runs 3' to 5' relative to the fork movement.
For enzymes, nail the three key points: enzymes are globular proteins with a specific active site shape, they lower activation energy by binding the substrate in an induced-fit model, and they are affected by temperature, pH, and substrate concentration. The lock-and-key vs. induced-fit distinction is a classic 2-mark question.
Topic 3: Genetics
Genetics questions fall into two categories: process questions (meiosis, non-disjunction) and calculation questions (Punnett squares, chi-squared tests, pedigree analysis). Master both, because Paper 2 data-based questions almost always include a genetics problem worth 4-8 marks.
The meiosis diagram question is a gift if you prepare it. You should be able to sketch and label all stages: Prophase I (crossing over at chiasmata, homologous chromosomes pair as bivalents), Metaphase I (homologous pairs align at equator, independent assortment occurs), Anaphase I (homologous chromosomes separate, sister chromatids stay together), Telophase I, then Prophase II through Telophase II yielding four haploid daughter cells. The key phrase for full marks: "meiosis generates genetic variation through crossing over and independent assortment." 你应该能画出并标注所有阶段:前期I(交叉互换在交叉点,同源染色体配对成二价体),中期I(同源配对在赤道板排列,自由组合发生),后期I(同源染色体分开,姐妹染色单体保持在一起),末期I,然后前期II到末期II产生四个单倍体子细胞。
For dihybrid crosses, always check whether the genes are linked or unlinked. If unlinked (on different chromosomes), you use the 9:3:3:1 ratio. If linked (on the same chromosome), recombinants will appear at lower frequencies, and you may need to calculate recombination frequency as map distance. This distinction separates grade 6 from grade 7 candidates.
Topic 4: Ecology
Ecology used to be the "easy" topic, but recent exams have raised the bar. You now need quantitative skills: calculating Simpson's diversity index, constructing and interpreting pyramids of energy (always upright) versus pyramids of biomass and numbers (can be inverted), and using Lincoln index for population estimates.
The carbon cycle is the most frequently tested biogeochemical cycle. You must trace carbon through photosynthesis (CO2 + H2O to glucose), respiration (glucose to CO2), decomposition (organic matter to CO2 by saprotrophs), combustion (fossil fuels to CO2), and sedimentation (formation of limestone and fossil fuels over geological time). Methane production by methanogenic archaea in anaerobic conditions is a higher-level detail that scores top marks.
Climate change questions require data analysis: you will be given graphs of atmospheric CO2 concentration (Keeling curve), global temperature anomalies, or ice core data. Practice describing trends (overall increase, seasonal fluctuations, correlation between CO2 and temperature) and evaluating the evidence -- distinguish between correlation and causation, and discuss the precautionary principle.
Topic 5: Evolution and Biodiversity
Evolution is a concept-heavy topic with few calculations, so the marks come from your ability to explain, compare, and evaluate. Natural selection is the centerpiece: you must describe it as a step-by-step process -- variation exists within a population, individuals with advantageous traits survive and reproduce more, these traits are heritable, and over generations the allele frequency shifts. Every exam asks this.
Cladistics is a guaranteed Paper 2 question. You must be able to construct a cladogram from a table of shared traits, identify the outgroup, and determine which species are most closely related based on the most recent common ancestor. The trick: count the number of shared derived traits, not total traits. Cladograms are based on synapomorphies (shared derived characteristics), not symplesiomorphies (shared ancestral characteristics).
Topic 6: Human Physiology
This is the longest Core topic and the one where integration skills matter most. Questions rarely test a single system in isolation. For example, a question about exercise will pull from ventilation (Topic 6.4), circulation (6.2), and muscle contraction (6.5) all at once.
The immune system generates the most confusion. Make a clear distinction: innate immunity (skin, mucous membranes, phagocytes -- non-specific, immediate) vs. adaptive immunity (B lymphocytes producing antibodies, T lymphocytes -- specific, slower, creates memory). Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins produced by plasma cells (differentiated B cells). Each antibody is specific to one antigen. Antibiotics do NOT work on viruses -- this is the single most common trick question.
For the nephron (kidney), drawing a labeled diagram is the best preparation. Ultrafiltration occurs in the glomerulus under high pressure: small molecules (water, glucose, urea, salts) pass into Bowman's capsule while large proteins and blood cells are retained. Selective reabsorption happens in the proximal convoluted tubule: glucose is 100% reabsorbed via active transport, water follows by osmosis. The loop of Henle creates a concentration gradient in the medulla. ADH controls water reabsorption in the collecting duct by inserting aquaporins.
Exam Day Strategy
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, 45 min, 30 questions): 30 questions in 45 minutes means 90 seconds per question. Do not spend 5 minutes on one question. Mark it and return. Common trap: double negatives in the stem.
Paper 2 (Data-based + Short Answer, 75 min SL / 135 min HL): The data-based question at the start is worth ~15 marks. Spend at least 20 minutes on it. Read the axes, note units, look for outliers, describe the overall trend first, then pick out specific data points. Never forget to quote actual numbers from the graph.
Paper 3 (Option + Practical, 60 min SL / 75 min HL): The Section A practical skills questions are often overlooked in revision. You must know how to calculate standard deviation, interpret error bars (overlapping = not significantly different), and evaluate the reliability of an experimental method. Section B is your chosen Option -- answer only your Option, do not mix.
