Statistics in OCR A-Level Mathematics is more than just memorising formulas -- it is about understanding how data behaves, how to model uncertainty, and how to draw valid conclusions from samples. Whether you are sitting the AS-level pure statistics paper or preparing for the full A-Level, this guide covers every major topic in OCR S1 and beyond: probability fundamentals, the binomial and normal distributions, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, and practical exam technique.
1. Probability Foundations
Probability underpins every statistical method you will encounter in OCR Mathematics. The exam board expects fluency with:
Sample spaces and events (样本空间与事件): For a random experiment, the sample space is the set of all possible outcomes. An event is any subset. You must be comfortable listing outcomes systematically -- tree diagrams, two-way tables, and Venn diagrams are all fair game in S1 questions.
Mutually exclusive and independent events (互斥与独立事件): Two events A and B are mutually exclusive if P(A ∩ B) = 0 -- they cannot happen together. They are independent if P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B). This distinction is tested repeatedly; many students lose marks by confusing the two.
Conditional probability (条件概率): P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) / P(B). OCR S1 frequently asks you to interpret this in context -- for example, "Given that a student passed the theory test, what is the probability they also passed the practical?" Always read the word "given" as your cue for conditional probability.
Discrete random variables (离散随机变量): A DRV takes a countable set of values, each with an associated probability. You need to be able to construct a probability distribution table, verify that probabilities sum to 1, and compute E(X) and Var(X). Formulae to know cold:
- E(X) = Σ x × P(X = x) -- the expected value or mean
- E(X²) = Σ x² × P(X = x)
- Var(X) = E(X²) − [E(X)]²
2. Binomial Distribution
The binomial distribution is one of the most heavily examined topics in OCR S1. It models the number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, each with the same probability of success.
Conditions for Binomial (二项分布的条件): Before applying B(n, p), always check: (1) There is a fixed number of trials n; (2) Each trial is independent; (3) Each trial has exactly two outcomes (success/failure); (4) The probability of success p is constant. If a question says "without replacement" and the population is small, binomial is not appropriate -- you would need the hypergeometric distribution, though OCR does not examine it directly.
Key formulae (核心公式):
- P(X = r) = ⁿCᵣ × pʳ × (1−p)ⁿ⁻ʳ -- the probability of exactly r successes
- E(X) = np
- Var(X) = np(1−p)
Using the calculator (计算器使用): OCR permits the Casio fx-991EX / fx-991CN X series calculators, which have built-in binomial functions. Learn both the Bpd (Binomial Probability Density -- for exact values) and Bcd (Binomial Cumulative Density -- for P(X ≤ k)). For P(X ≥ k), use the complement: 1 − P(X ≤ k−1). This is much faster than summing manually.
At least 5 = P(X ≥ 5) = 1 − P(X ≤ 4)。More than 5 = P(X > 5) = P(X ≥ 6) = 1 − P(X ≤ 5)。
3. Normal Distribution
The normal distribution is the continuous counterpart to the binomial and appears in both S1 and the full A-Level. OCR expects you to handle it fluently with and without your calculator.
Standardisation (标准化): Any normal variable X ~ N(μ, σ²) can be transformed to the standard normal Z ~ N(0, 1²) using:
Z = (X − μ) / σ
This formula appears simple, but context matters: you are converting a raw score into a z-score that tells you how many standard deviations the value is from the mean. A positive z-score means above average; negative means below.
Inverse normal (逆正态): Given a probability (area under the curve), find the corresponding X value. Example: "The top 10% of candidates scored above what mark?" If marks follow N(65, 12²), find the 90th percentile. On the Casio fx-991, use the Inverse Normal function: input area = 0.90 (left tail), μ = 65, σ = 12.
Normal approximation to binomial (用正态近似二项): When n is large and p is not too extreme, B(n, p) ≈ N(np, np(1−p)). OCR requires a continuity correction If you want P(X ≤ 45) from B(100, 0.4), approximate with P(Y < 45.5) where Y ~ N(40, 24). For P(X ≥ 30), use P(Y > 29.5). The half-unit shift compensates for approximating a discrete distribution with a continuous one.
4. Sampling and Data Representation
Sampling methods (抽样方法): OCR distinguishes between:
- Simple random sampling (简单随机抽样): Every member has an equal chance. Use random number tables or calculators.
- Stratified sampling (分层抽样): Split the population into strata, then sample proportionally from each. Formula: sample size from stratum = (stratum size / population size) × total sample size.
- Systematic sampling (系统抽样): Pick every kth item after a random start.
- Quota sampling (配额抽样): Non-random; interviewer fills quotas for each category. Quick and cheap, but subject to bias.
- Opportunity/Convenience sampling (便利抽样): Use whoever is available. Fastest but least representative.
A common OCR exam question gives you a scenario and asks you to identify and critique the sampling method. Always mention bias (偏差), representation (代表性), and practicality (可行性).
Data visualisation (数据可视化):
- Histograms (直方图): For continuous data. The key formula is frequency density = frequency / class width. OCR frequently asks you to calculate frequencies from a histogram or vice versa. The area of each bar is proportional to frequency -- not the height.
- Cumulative frequency graphs (累积频率图): Plot upper class boundaries against running totals. Use these to estimate medians, quartiles, and percentiles by drawing horizontal lines.
- Box plots (箱线图): Show minimum, Q1, median, Q3, maximum. Outliers are any points below Q1 − 1.5×IQR or above Q3 + 1.5×IQR, where IQR = Q3 − Q1.
5. Measures of Central Tendency and Spread
Mean and standard deviation (均值与标准差): For a dataset x₁, x₂, ..., xₙ:
- Sample mean: x̄ = Σxᵢ / n
- Sample variance: s² = Σ(xᵢ − x̄)² / (n−1) -- note the n−1 denominator for samples (Bessel's correction). For a population, divide by n instead.
- Standard deviation: s = √(s²)
Coding (编码): If y = ax + b (a linear transformation), then:
- Mean: ȳ = a·x̄ + b
- Standard deviation: sᵧ = |a|·sₓ -- the constant b does not affect spread
- Variance: s²ᵧ = a²·s²ₓ
OCR loves coding questions because they test whether you genuinely understand how transformations affect distribution parameters. Remember: adding shifts the mean but not the spread; multiplying scales both.
Outliers (异常值): Two rules OCR may use -- (a) More than 2 standard deviations from the mean; (b) The box-plot rule: below Q1 − 1.5×IQR or above Q3 + 1.5×IQR. Read the question to know which rule applies. Clean the data by removing outliers only when explicitly instructed.
6. Correlation and Regression
Denoted r, it measures the strength and direction of linear correlation between two variables. Values range from −1 (perfect negative) to +1 (perfect positive). Zero means no linear correlation -- but there could still be a non-linear relationship.
The calculator computes r directly from bivariate data. Know how to interpret:
- |r| > 0.8: strong correlation
- 0.5 < |r| < 0.8: moderate correlation
- |r| < 0.5: weak correlation
Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (斯皮尔曼等级相关系数): Used when data is ordinal (ranked) or when the relationship is monotonic but not necessarily linear. Formula:
rₛ = 1 − [6Σd² / n(n² − 1)]
where d is the difference between the ranks of each pair. This is particularly useful when dealing with judges' scores, competition rankings, or preference data.
Least squares regression (最小二乘回归): The regression line of y on x is y = a + bx where:
- b = Sₓᵧ / Sₓₓ (gradient)
- a = ȳ − b·x̄ (intercept)
- Sₓᵧ = Σ(xᵢ − x̄)(yᵢ − ȳ) = Σxᵢyᵢ − (Σxᵢ)(Σyᵢ)/n
- Sₓₓ = Σ(xᵢ − x̄)² = Σxᵢ² − (Σxᵢ)²/n
Interpolation vs extrapolation (内插与外推): Using the regression line to predict y for an x-value within the range of observed data is interpolation -- this is reliable. Predicting outside that range is extrapolation -- this is unreliable and often produces nonsensical results. OCR explicitly tests this distinction.
OCR 在 4-6 分的大题中常要求你 comment on the reliability,这时候一定要区分 linearity、causality 和 extrapolation 三个维度。
7. Hypothesis Testing
Hypothesis testing is the crown jewel of OCR S1 and carries heavy weight in the exam. The core idea: you assume a null hypothesis H₀ is true, then check whether the observed data is so unlikely under H₀ that you must reject it in favour of the alternative H₁.
The 5-step structure (五步法) -- commit this to memory:
- State hypotheses: H₀: p = [value] vs H₁: p < [value] (one-tailed lower), or p > [value] (one-tailed upper), or p ≠ [value] (two-tailed)
- Identify the model: Under H₀, X ~ B(n, p₀)
- Calculate the p-value or critical region: P(X ≤ observed) for lower tail, P(X ≥ observed) for upper tail. For two-tailed, double the smaller tail probability
- Compare to significance level: If p-value < α (usually 0.05 or 0.01), the result is significant; reject H₀
- Write a conclusion in context: "There is sufficient evidence at the 5% level to suggest that..." -- always mention the significance level and state your conclusion in the words of the problem, not just "reject H₀"
Critical regions (临界区域): Instead of computing the p-value, find the set of X values for which H₀ would be rejected. For a one-tailed test at α = 0.05, find the largest (or smallest) value of X such that the cumulative probability just exceeds 0.05.
Type I and Type II errors
- Type I error: Rejecting H₀ when it is actually true. The probability of a Type I error equals the significance level α.
- Type II error: Failing to reject H₀ when H₁ is true. Its probability (β) depends on the true value of the parameter -- you may be asked to calculate it for a specific alternative value.
Since [p-value] < [significance level], there is sufficient evidence to reject H₀ and conclude that [alternative in context]." Since [p-value] > [significance level], there is insufficient evidence to reject H₀."
8. Exam Strategy for OCR Statistics
Question order and time management (答题顺序与时间管理): The S1 paper is typically 75 minutes for 60 marks, giving you 1.25 minutes per mark. A 4-mark hypothesis test should take about 5 minutes. If stuck on a probability question, flag it, move on, and return later -- do not sacrifice the easier later questions for one early obstacle.
Calculator mastery (计算器熟练度): The Casio fx-991 series can handle:
- Binomial probabilities (Bpd, Bcd) via Menu 7 (Distribution)
- Normal probabilities (Npd, Ncd) and inverse normal
- Summary statistics (mean, standard deviation) for a data list via Menu 6 (Statistics)
- PMCC and linear regression from bivariate data
Spend 30 minutes before the exam verifying you can find each function without hunting through menus. In the pressure of the exam hall, calculator fluency saves precious minutes.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Not showing working: OCR awards method marks. Even if your final answer is wrong, a correct method with a clear formula can earn most of the marks.
- Continuity correction errors: When approximating binomial with normal, forgetting the ±0.5 adjustment costs you the accuracy mark.
- Confusing n and n−1: Use n for population variance, n−1 for sample variance. OCR's S1 uses n−1 (sample standard deviation) by default for the large data set questions.
- Rounding too early: Keep intermediate values to at least 4 significant figures; only round the final answer to 3 s.f. unless stated otherwise.
- Skipping the conclusion: A hypothesis test without a contextual conclusion is incomplete -- even if the numbers are perfect, you lose the final mark.
