1. Proof
Proof is the first topic listed in the OCR specification, and it sets the tone for the entire A-Level. You need to master three types of proof: deduction, exhaustion, and contradiction.
Deduction (演绎法) is the most common form of proof. You start from known facts and use logical steps to reach a conclusion. For example, proving that the sum of two odd numbers is always even: let the odd numbers be 2m+1 and 2n+1, then their sum is 2(m+n+1), which is even. This kind of algebraic proof appears frequently in exam questions.
Exhaustion (穷举法) involves checking every possible case. While this sounds tedious, in exam contexts it typically means checking a small finite set of possibilities. For instance, proving that there are no prime numbers between 90 and 95 requires checking only 91, 92, 93, and 94.
Proof by contradiction (反证法) is the most elegant and powerful technique. You assume the opposite of what you want to prove, then show that this assumption leads to a logical impossibility. The classic example is proving that the square root of 2 is irrational. This method is especially tested in P2 and P3 papers.
2. Algebra and Functions
Algebraic manipulation is the backbone of pure mathematics. You must be completely comfortable with factorising polynomials, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula.
Polynomials (多项式): The factor theorem and remainder theorem are your best friends here. If f(a) = 0, then (x-a) is a factor of f(x). This simple statement unlocks the ability to factorise cubics and quartics. For OCR, you will encounter questions that ask you to factorise a cubic, sketch its graph, and find the coordinates of turning points — all in one question.
Partial fractions (部分分式): This is a Pure Core 3 topic that many students initially find challenging. The key is recognising the three types: linear factors (A/(x+a) + B/(x+b)), repeated linear factors (A/(x+a) + B/(x+a)^2), and irreducible quadratic factors ((Ax+B)/(x^2+bx+c)). Practice the methodical approach: set up the form, multiply through by the denominator, substitute convenient x-values, and equate coefficients.
The modulus function (绝对值函数): |x| is deceptively simple. The real challenge comes when you solve equations and inequalities involving modulus — you must consider both the positive and negative cases. A common exam pitfall is forgetting to check which solutions are valid by substituting back into the original equation.
💡 Exam Tip
When solving |f(x)| = g(x), always split into two cases: f(x) = g(x) and f(x) = -g(x). Then check ALL solutions against the original equation. At least 2-3 marks per paper are lost due to extraneous solutions.
3. Coordinate Geometry
Straight lines, circles, and parametric equations — these three form the coordinate geometry section.
Circles (圆): You must know both forms of the circle equation. The standard form (x-a)² + (y-b)² = r² gives you the centre (a,b) and radius r immediately. The expanded form x² + y² + 2gx + 2fy + c = 0 requires completing the square to find the centre (-g,-f) and radius sqrt(g²+f²-c). Exam questions frequently ask you to find the equation of a tangent to a circle at a given point, or to determine whether a line intersects, touches, or misses a circle.
Parametric equations (参数方程): These appear in P3 and are essential for modelling curves that are not functions in the usual sense. The classic parametric curve is a circle: x = r cos t, y = r sin t. To find the gradient, use the chain rule: dy/dx = (dy/dt) / (dx/dt).
4. Trigonometry 三角学
Trigonometry is divided into two stages in OCR. P1 covers the basics: sine, cosine, tangent, and solving simple trigonometric equations. P2 and P3 introduce radians, reciprocal trig functions, compound angle formulae, and more complex equation solving.
Radians (弧度制): This is the first major shift from GCSE thinking. Forget degrees — almost everything in A-Level trigonometry is in radians. Memorise the key conversions: pi radians = 180 degrees, pi/2 = 90 degrees, pi/3 = 60 degrees, pi/4 = 45 degrees, pi/6 = 30 degrees. Arc length = rθ, sector area = (1/2)r²θ. These two formulae appear in nearly every P2 paper.
Trigonometric identities (三角恒等式): The two fundamental identities you must have memorised are sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 and tan θ = sin θ / cos θ. From these, many other identities can be derived. The compound angle formulae — sin(A+B), cos(A+B), tan(A+B) — are given in the formula booklet, but you need to know when and how to use them. The double angle formulae sin(2A) = 2sin A cos A and cos(2A) = cos²A - sin²A = 2cos²A - 1 = 1 - 2sin²A are particularly useful.
R-form (R变换): The expression a sin θ + b cos θ can be written as R sin(θ + α) or R cos(θ - α). This transformation is tested almost every year in P3. It is used to find the maximum and minimum values of trigonometric expressions and to solve certain types of equations.
🎯 Key Skill
Converting a sin θ + b cos θ to R sin(θ + α): R = sqrt(a² + b²), α = arctan(b/a). Always check the quadrant carefully — this is where most students drop marks.
5. Sequences and Series
OCR covers arithmetic sequences, geometric sequences, and binomial expansions.
Arithmetic sequences (等差数列): The nth term is a + (n-1)d. The sum to n terms is S_n = (n/2)(2a + (n-1)d) or S_n = (n/2)(a + L) where L is the last term. The sigma notation Σ appears here — make sure you can expand sums written in sigma notation and find their values.
Geometric sequences (等比数列): The nth term is ar^(n-1). The sum to n terms is S_n = a(1-r^n)/(1-r) for r ≠ 1. The sum to infinity, S_infinity = a/(1-r), only exists when |r| < 1. This convergence condition is a favourite exam question — "State the condition for the sum to infinity to exist."
Binomial expansion (二项式展开): For (1+x)^n where n is a positive integer, the expansion uses binomial coefficients. In P3, you extend this to rational and negative n using (1+x)^n = 1 + nx + n(n-1)x²/2! + ... which is valid only for |x| < 1. The range of validity is another common exam trap.
6. Differentiation 微分
Differentiation is introduced in P1 and taken much further in P2 and P3.
First principles (第一原理): Understanding that the derivative is a limit is important conceptually, though exam questions on first principles are usually straightforward: apply the formula lim(h→0) [f(x+h) - f(x)]/h to a quadratic or simple rational function.
Rules of differentiation: The chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule are non-negotiable. The chain rule: d/dx[f(g(x))] = f'(g(x)) * g'(x). The product rule: d/dx[uv] = u'v + uv'. The quotient rule: d/dx[u/v] = (u'v - uv')/v².
Implicit differentiation (隐函数微分): When y cannot be easily expressed as a function of x, differentiate both sides with respect to x, treating y as a function of x and using the chain rule: d/dx[y^n] = n y^(n-1) * dy/dx. This is a P3 topic that connects directly to parametric equations.
Applications (应用): Finding equations of tangents and normals, identifying stationary points, determining the nature of stationary points using the second derivative test, and solving optimisation problems (maxima and minima).

Integration is the inverse of differentiation, but it demands its own set of skills and techniques.
Basic integration (基本积分): Memorise the fundamental integrals: int x^n dx = x^(n+1)/(n+1) + C (n ≠ -1), int 1/x dx = ln|x| + C, int e^x dx = e^x + C, int sin x dx = -cos x + C, int cos x dx = sin x + C. Always remember the +C for indefinite integrals — omitting it costs a mark.
Definite integrals (定积分): The definite integral int_a^b f(x) dx gives the area between the curve y = f(x) and the x-axis from x=a to x=b. If the curve goes below the x-axis, the integral is negative — you must split the integral to find the total area. This is the most common trap in P1 integration questions.
Integration by substitution (换元积分法): This is the single most important integration technique in P2 and P3. Given int f(g(x))g'(x) dx, substitute u = g(x), then du = g'(x) dx, transforming the integral to int f(u) du. For definite integrals, remember to change the limits when you change the variable.
Integration by parts (分部积分法): int u dv = uv - int v du. The hardest part is choosing u and dv correctly. The LIATE rule helps: Logarithmic, Inverse trig, Algebraic, Trigonometric, Exponential — choose u from the earlier categories. For OCR, the most common applications involve products of x and e^x, x and sin x, x and cos x, and ln x.
Area and volume (面积与体积): Beyond simple areas, P3 introduces the area between two curves as int_a^b [upper - lower] dx, and volumes of revolution: V = pi int_a^b y² dx (rotation about the x-axis) or V = pi int_c^d x² dy (rotation about the y-axis). Parametric volumes of revolution appear in P3 as well.
8. Exponentials and Logarithms
The natural exponential function e^x and the natural logarithm ln x are fundamental to A-Level mathematics.
Key properties (关键性质): ln(ab) = ln a + ln b, ln(a/b) = ln a - ln b, ln(a^n) = n ln a. The relationship e^(ln x) = x and ln(e^x) = x underpins much of the work in this topic.
Modelling with exponentials (指数模型): Exponential growth and decay models appear in many real-world contexts: population growth, radioactive decay, cooling of objects (Newton's law), and compound interest. The general form is A = A_0 e^(kt), where k > 0 indicates growth and k < 0 indicates decay. OCR often asks you to interpret the constants in context.
9. Vectors 向量
Vectors appear only in P3 in the OCR specification, but they carry significant weight.
Vector basics (向量基础): A vector has both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of vector v = xi + yj + zk is |v| = sqrt(x² + y² + z²). A unit vector in the direction of v is v/|v|. Adding vectors follows the triangle law or component-wise addition.
Scalar (dot) product (点积): For vectors a and b, a dot b = |a||b| cos θ, where θ is the angle between them. In component form, if a = (a₁, a₂, a₃) and b = (b₁, b₂, b₃), then a dot b = a₁b₁ + a₂b₂ + a₃b₃. The most important application is finding the angle between two vectors: cos θ = (a dot b) / (|a||b|). If a dot b = 0, the vectors are perpendicular.
Vector equations of lines (直线的向量方程): A line passing through point A with direction vector d has equation r = a + t d, where r is the position vector of any point on the line and t is a scalar parameter. To find the intersection of two lines, equate their vector equations and solve for parameters. To check if two lines are parallel, see if their direction vectors are scalar multiples. To check if two lines are skew (neither parallel nor intersecting), show they have no intersection and are not parallel.
📐 Quick Reference: Vector Shortcuts
Parallel: d₁ = k d₂ for some scalar k. Perpendicular: d₁ dot d₂ = 0. Angle between: cos θ = |d₁ dot d₂| / (|d₁||d₂|). Distance from point to line: |AP × d| / |d| (cross product, not required for OCR). OCR uses the projection method instead.
10. Numerical Methods
Numerical methods appear in P3 and involve finding approximate solutions to equations that cannot be solved algebraically.
Change of sign (符号变化法): If f(x) is continuous on [a,b] and f(a) and f(b) have opposite signs, there is at least one root in (a,b). Exam questions typically ask you to show that a root lies in a specific interval by evaluating f at the endpoints.
Iteration (迭代法): Rearrange f(x) = 0 into the form x = g(x), then use the recurrence relation x_{n+1} = g(x_n) with a suitable starting value. The iteration converges if |g'(x)| < 1 near the root.
Newton-Raphson method (牛顿拉弗森法): x_{n+1} = x_n - f(x_n)/f'(x_n). This method converges rapidly when it works, but it can fail if f'(x_n) is close to zero or if the starting value is too far from the root. Always draw a sketch to understand what is happening.
Study Strategy: From D to A* 学习策略:从D到A*
If you ask any successful A-Level Maths student what their secret is, the answer is almost always the same: past papers. But simply doing past papers is not enough. You need a structured approach.
Phase 1: Foundation
Weeks 1-4: Master P1 topics. Complete textbook exercises for every chapter. Make formula flashcards. Target: 70% on P1 papers.
Phase 2: Build Up
Weeks 5-10: Tackle P2. Integration techniques, logarithms, trigonometry. Target: 60% on P2 papers.
Phase 3: Advance
Weeks 11-16: P3 content. Vectors, implicit differentiation, volumes of revolution. Target: 65% on P3 papers.
Phase 4: Polish
Weeks 17-20: Full timed papers. Identify weak areas. Drill topic-specific past paper questions. Target: 80%+.
A systematic approach to error tracking is also essential. After each past paper, categorise your errors: was it a conceptual misunderstanding, an algebraic slip, or a careless reading of the question? Conceptual errors require revisiting the topic. Algebraic slips mean you need more practice under timed conditions. Careless reading means you need to slow down and underline key words in the question.
Time management in the exam is critical.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting the +C in indefinite integration: This is the single most common mistake in P1 and P2. Every indefinite integral must have +C.
Not checking the domain of solutions: After solving a trigonometric equation, check which solutions lie in the given interval. This is worth 1-2 marks per question.
Misapplying the chain rule: When differentiating ln(f(x)), the derivative is f'(x)/f(x), not 1/f(x). Similarly, for e^(f(x)), the derivative is f'(x)e^(f(x)).
Losing the negative sign in integration of sin x: The integral of sin x is -cos x + C, not cos x + C. This mistake appears with alarming frequency. sin x的积分是-cos x + C,不是cos x + C——这个错误出现的频率高得惊人。
Forgetting to square root for magnitude of vectors: |v| = sqrt(x² + y² + z²). Many students write x² + y² + z² and forget the square root.
Binomial expansion validity: "Write down the range of values of x for which this expansion is valid" is worth an easy mark — |x| < 1 for (1+x)^n, or more generally |kx| < 1 for (1+kx)^n.
