Cell Structure and Biological Molecules
You must be able to draw and label every organelle, but more importantly, you need to explain how structure relates to function. For example, the Golgi apparatus does not simply "package proteins"; it modifies them by adding carbohydrate groups (glycoproteins), sorts them into vesicles, and directs them to the plasma membrane for exocytosis. 很多学生在考试中只会写 the function of mitochondria is to produce ATP,但 OCR 想要的是完整的叙述: the inner mitochondrial membrane is highly folded into cristae, increasing surface area for the electron transport chain and ATP synthase; the matrix contains enzymes for the Krebs cycle and mitochondrial DNA for self-replication. The four key groups (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids) each have a distinct monomer polymer relationship that OCR expects you to describe with precise vocabulary. 注意 OCR 会问 why starch is a good storage molecule (compact, insoluble so no osmotic effect, branched for rapid hydrolysis) 以及 why cellulose is good for structural support (beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds create linear chains, hydrogen bonding between adjacent chains forms microfibrils, which bundle into fibres)。 Proteins 方面,the four levels of structure (primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary) must be linked to the types of bonds involved. Haemoglobin 是 OCR 最爱 , a conjugated protein with a quaternary structure (two alpha and two beta subunits), each containing a haem group with an Fe2+ ion that binds one oxygen molecule. 考到 collagen 时重点记住: every third amino acid is glycine (small enough to fit inside the triple helix), and the staggered ends of tropocollagen molecules prevent weak spots in the fibril. Lipids: triglycerides vs phospholipids, saturated vs unsaturated fatty acids, and the emulsion test for lipids (add ethanol, shake, pour into water, look for a milky white emulsion). The biochemical tests for reducing sugars (Benedict's, heat, brick-red precipitate), non-reducing sugars (acid hydrolysis first, then Benedict's), starch (iodine, blue-black), and proteins (biuret, purple/violet) are guaranteed marks if you memorise the colour changes and conditions. Enzyme Kinetics and Cell Membranes
Enzymes are examined in almost every OCR paper because they connect multiple topics: protein structure, reaction rates, and practical investigations. The induced fit model (not the outdated lock and key) is the required explanation: the substrate binds to the active site, causing it to change shape slightly and put strain on bonds, lowering the activation energy. 特别注意 competitive inhibitors bind to the active site and can be overcome by increasing substrate concentration, while non-competitive inhibitors bind to an allosteric site, changing the active site's shape, and cannot be overcome by adding more substrate , 这个区别是 OCR 的经典陷阱题。 Cofactors (inorganic ions like Zn2+ or Cl-) vs coenzymes (organic molecules derived from vitamins, like NAD and CoA) vs prosthetic groups (permanently bound, like the haem group in carbonic anhydrase) , For the practical component, you need to understand how to investigate the effect of temperature or pH on enzyme activity using trypsin and milk (measuring time for the solution to clear), or catalase and hydrogen peroxide (measuring volume of oxygen produced). 记得讨论 control variables (volume and concentration of substrate, volume and concentration of enzyme, buffer solution for pH experiments) 以及为什么 initial rate of reaction 比 average rate 更可靠。 Cell membranes and transport The fluid mosaic model (phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, cholesterol, glycoproteins, and glycolipids) should be described with reference to the Singer-Nicolson model of 1972. 影响 membrane permeability 的因素: temperature (increases kinetic energy, phospholipids become more fluid; at very high temperatures proteins denature and the membrane breaks down) 和 solvents like ethanol (dissolves lipids in the membrane)。 Osmosis vs diffusion vs active transport: water potential (Ψ, measured in kPa, always negative in plant cells due to dissolved solutes), facilitated diffusion (channel proteins like aquaporins for water, carrier proteins for glucose), active transport (requires ATP, moves against the concentration gradient, uses carrier proteins that act as pumps), and co-transport (sodium-glucose co-transporter in the ileum). 务必掌握 the sodium-potassium pump: 3 Na+ out, 2 K+ in, uses ATP, creates an electrochemical gradient. This pump appears again in nerve impulses in Module 5, so solid understanding here pays dividends later. Endocytosis and exocytosis (bulk transport, requires ATP, involves vesicle formation and fusion) are also examinable. Cell Division, DNA Replication and the Cell Cycle
This is arguably the most heavily examined section within Module 2. 要区分 mitosis (produces two genetically identical diploid daughter cells, for growth and repair) 和 meiosis (produces four genetically different haploid gametes, for sexual reproduction)。OCR 要求你能画出并标注 the stages of mitosis: interphase (G1: protein synthesis and growth, S: DNA replication, G2: organelle replication and further growth), prophase (chromosomes condense and become visible, nuclear envelope breaks down, centrioles move to opposite poles forming the spindle), metaphase (chromosomes line up at the equator, attached to spindle fibres by their centromeres), anaphase (centromeres divide, sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles by shortening spindle fibres), telophase (chromosomes decondense, nuclear envelope reforms), and cytokinesis (cytoplasm divides). 把 PMAT 记成 Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase 是基本功,但 OCR 的难点在于让你在 microscope images 或 diagrams 里识别 stage,以及计算 mitotic index (number of cells in mitosis divided by total number of cells)。 The process is semi-conservative (each new DNA molecule contains one original strand and one new strand), as proven by the Meselson-Stahl experiment using N15 and N14 isotopes and density gradient centrifugation. DNA helicase unwinds the double helix by breaking hydrogen bonds between complementary bases then free DNA nucleotides pair with exposed bases following complementary base pairing rules (A-T, C-G) then DNA polymerase joins adjacent nucleotides by forming phosphodiester bonds in a condensation reaction, moving along the template strand in the 5' to 3' direction then this creates a leading strand (continuous synthesis) and a lagging strand (discontinuous synthesis in Okazaki fragments, joined by DNA ligase)。很多学生 confuse DNA polymerase with DNA helicase 或者忘记提 Okazaki fragments and DNA ligase on the lagging strand , 这些细节是 A* 和 A 的分水岭。 The Meselson-Stahl experiment needs its own paragraph because OCR loves it. After one generation in N14 medium, all DNA had an intermediate density (one N15 strand, one N14 strand), ruling out conservative replication. After two generations, half the DNA was intermediate and half was light (N14 only), confirming semi-conservative replication and ruling out dispersive. 如果你不能解释 N15/N14 density bands 的 expected results for each hypothesis,请立刻回头复习。 Exchange and Transport
Once you have mastered cellular fundamentals, OCR expects you to scale up to organism-level systems. The unifying principle across Module 3 is Fick's Law: rate of diffusion is proportional to (surface area × concentration difference) ÷ diffusion distance. Every exchange surface (alveoli in lungs, villi in the small intestine, gill filaments in fish, tracheoles in insects) is an adaptation that maximises surface area, maintains a steep concentration gradient, and minimises diffusion distance. 气体交换 system 对比是经典题: mammalian lungs (alveoli have large surface area, thin squamous epithelium, good blood supply from capillaries, ventilation maintains concentration gradient) vs fish gills (countercurrent flow where blood flows in the opposite direction to water, maintaining the concentration gradient along the entire length of the gill lamellae, achieving up to 80% oxygen extraction) vs insect tracheal system (spiracles open into tracheae which branch into tracheoles, delivering oxygen directly to cells, with rhythmic abdominal pumping to ventilate and lactic acid lowering water potential in active tissues to draw water out of tracheoles for faster gas exchange)。 Circulatory systems: open (insects, haemolymph bathes organs directly, low pressure, no respiratory pigment) vs closed (vertebrates, blood confined to vessels, higher pressure, haemoglobin for oxygen transport). 心脏结构: the mammalian heart (four chambers, atrioventricular valves between atria and ventricles, semilunar valves at the exits of the pulmonary artery and aorta, the cardiac cycle including atrial systole, ventricular systole, and diastole)。OCR 经常让你解释 how the structure of arteries (thick muscular and elastic walls, narrow lumen, no valves), veins (thin walls, wide lumen, valves to prevent backflow), and capillaries (single layer of endothelial cells, narrow lumen, gaps between cells) relates to their function. 别忘了 tissue fluid formation: at the arteriole end of a capillary, hydrostatic pressure is higher than oncotic pressure (water potential due to plasma proteins), so fluid is forced out; at the venule end, hydrostatic pressure drops and oncotic pressure draws water back in, with excess drained by the lymphatic system. Transport in plants: xylem (transports water and mineral ions from roots to leaves, composed of dead hollow cells with lignin-reinforced walls, flow driven by transpiration pull under the cohesion-tension theory) vs phloem (transports sucrose and amino acids from sources to sinks, composed of living sieve tube elements and companion cells, flow driven by pressure differences according to the mass flow hypothesis). 重点掌握 the cohesion-tension theory: water evaporates from mesophyll cells into air spaces during transpiration then this lowers water potential in the leaf cells then water moves from xylem into leaf cells down the water potential gradient then this creates tension (negative pressure) in the xylem then water molecules cohere to each other (hydrogen bonds) and adhere to xylem walls (lignin), pulling the entire column of water up from the roots. 准备回答 evidence for this theory (diameter of tree trunks decreases during the day when transpiration is highest, broken xylem vessels draw in air rather than leaking water, etc.)。 Genetics, Variation and Evolution
The genetics section demands both memorisation and problem-solving. Start with the basics: gene (a sequence of DNA bases that codes for a polypeptide or functional RNA), allele (an alternative version of a gene), locus (the fixed position of a gene on a chromosome), genotype (the genetic constitution of an organism), phenotype (the observable characteristics resulting from the interaction of genotype and environment). 区分 homozygous (two identical alleles at a locus), heterozygous (two different alleles at a locus), dominant (allele always expressed in the phenotype), recessive (allele only expressed when homozygous), codominant (both alleles expressed equally in the phenotype, e.g. ABO blood groups, sickle cell trait)。 Monohybrid crosses 使用 Punnett squares 计算 phenotypic and genotypic ratios。 Practice identifying patterns: autosomal recessive skips generations and affects males and females equally; X-linked recessive affects more males and is passed from carrier mothers to affected sons; autosomal dominant appears in every generation; X-linked dominant is rare but affected fathers pass it to all daughters. 但是 linkage (autosomal and sex-linkage) 会打乱这个比例,因为位于同一染色体上的基因倾向于一起遗传,除非发生 crossing over during prophase I of meiosis。Chi-squared test: OCR expects you to calculate expected values, apply the formula (O-E)²/E, compare the sum to the critical value at p=0.05 with the appropriate degrees of freedom, and conclude whether the difference between observed and expected is significant or due to chance. Mutations and variation: gene mutations (substitution, deletion, insertion) and their effects (silent, missense, nonsense, frameshift). Chromosome mutations (changes in whole chromosomes or chromosome number, e.g. non-disjunction leading to Down syndrome with trisomy 21). Sources of genetic variation: mutation (the ultimate source of new alleles), crossing over during meiosis (exchange of alleles between homologous chromosomes), independent assortment (random arrangement of homologous pairs at the equator), and random fertilisation (any sperm can fertilise any egg). 区分 continuous variation (polygenic, influenced by environment, normal distribution curve, e.g. height) 和 discontinuous variation (monogenic, distinct categories, unaffected by environment, e.g. blood group)。 Natural selection and evolution: OCR 的答案必须包含以下要素 , there is variation within a population due to random mutations; a selection pressure (e.g. predation, disease, climate change) acts on the population; individuals with advantageous alleles are more likely to survive and reproduce (differential reproductive success); these individuals pass on their advantageous alleles to their offspring; over many generations, the frequency of the advantageous allele increases in the gene pool. 这是 standard answer structure,适用于 antibiotics resistance in bacteria, pesticide resistance in insects, industrial melanism in peppered moths, 以及任何 adaptation question。区分 stabilising selection (favours the mean, reduces variation, e.g. human birth weight), directional selection (favours one extreme, shifts the mean, e.g. antibiotic resistance), and disruptive selection (favours both extremes, can lead to speciation, e.g. beak sizes in finches on different islands)。 Speciation: allopatric (geographic isolation prevents gene flow, populations experience different selection pressures, accumulate different mutations, eventually become reproductively isolated) vs sympatric (reproductive isolation within the same geographic area, often due to polyploidy in plants or behavioural differences in animals). 关于 evidence for evolution, know: palaeontology (fossil records show gradual change over time and transitional forms like Archaeopteryx), comparative anatomy (homologous structures like the pentadactyl limb indicate common ancestry, analogous structures like insect and bird wings indicate convergent evolution), comparative biochemistry (DNA sequencing and cytochrome c comparisons show degree of relatedness), and biogeography (distribution of species across continents explained by continental drift)。 OCR Examiner Tips and Grade Boosters
Common mistakes that cost students grades at the A/B boundary: 首先,using vague language. OCR mark schemes reward precise biological terminology. Saying "the enzyme stops working" will get zero marks; saying "the tertiary structure of the enzyme is disrupted, changing the shape of the active site so the substrate is no longer complementary and cannot bind" will get full marks. 其次,not reading the command word. "Describe" means state what happens; "Explain" means give reasons why it happens (because...); "Suggest" means apply knowledge to an unfamiliar context; "Compare" means give both similarities and differences; "Evaluate" means give advantages and disadvantages and reach a conclusion. 第三,practical-based questions (PAGs) are worth at least 15% of your final grade. You must know how to: plan an investigation (identify independent, dependent, and control variables; describe the method; state how to measure results; explain how to ensure reliability through repeats and validity through controlling variables); present data (drawing graphs with labelled axes, appropriate scales, and best-fit lines, using standard form for very large or small numbers); and evaluate (identify anomalous results, calculate percentage error, suggest improvements, and discuss limitations of the methodology)。 For example, a question might ask you to compare how the sodium-potassium pump is used in the ileum (co-transport of glucose) vs in a neurone (generating the resting potential and propagating an action potential). You need to mentally connect ideas across the entire specification. 最后的时间管理: OCR A Level Biology Paper 1 (Biological Processes, 2h15m, 100 marks) 考 Modules 1, 2, 3, 5; Paper 2 (Biological Diversity, 2h15m, 100 marks) 考 Modules 1, 2, 4, 6; Paper 3 (Unified Biology, 1h30m, 70 marks) 考 all modules with synoptic questions and an extended essay question。 For Biology students, this calculator handles the chi-squared test calculations, standard deviation, and statistical analysis that appear in PAG questions and the mathematical skills component of OCR Biology (worth 10% of marks)。Its natural textbook display shows fractions and equations exactly as they appear in your exam paper,避免了因计算器操作不熟导致的非知识性失分。WeChat Shop Pick
