Defining Ecosystems
An ecosystem is a dynamic, self-sustaining system made up of a community of living organisms (the biotic component) interacting with their non-living environment (the abiotic component). The key word here is dynamic: ecosystems change over time and are never truly static.
Biotic vs Abiotic
Biotic factors include producers (autotrophs), consumers (heterotrophs), and decomposers (saprobionts). Abiotic factors include temperature, pH, light intensity, water availability, oxygen concentration, and soil mineral content.
Biomass 生物量
Biomass is the total mass of living material in a specific area at a given time. It is measured in grams per square metre (g m-2) for land ecosystems, or grams per cubic metre (g m-3) for aquatic ecosystems. Remember: biomass is measured as dry mass because water content varies significantly between organisms and would skew the data.
Measuring Biomass
To measure biomass: (1) collect representative samples using quadrats or transects; (2) dry the samples in an oven at a low temperature (around 80 degrees Celsius) until constant mass is achieved; (3) weigh the dry mass. For calorimetry, the sample is burned in a bomb calorimeter and the energy released is used to heat a known volume of water — the temperature rise gives you the energy content in kJ.
--- ### Energy Flow Through Ecosystems Energy enters most ecosystems as sunlight, which is captured by producers through photosynthesis. This is the starting point of all food chains.
GPP is the total amount of chemical energy converted from light energy by producers in a given area over a given time period. Think of it as the total photosynthetic output before any energy is used by the plant itself for respiration.
Net Primary Production (NPP)
NPP = GPP - R, where R is respiratory losses. NPP represents the energy actually available to the next trophic level — the primary consumers. This is a critical distinction that examiners love to test. The formula must be memorised: NPP = GPP - R.
NPP = GPP - R,其中R为呼吸损耗。NPP代表实际可供下一营养级——初级消费者——利用的能量。这是考官最喜欢考察的关键区分。公式必须记住:NPP = GPP - R。
Why Energy Transfer Is Inefficient
At each trophic level, only about 10% of the energy is passed on. Around 90% is lost. Reasons include: (1) not all of the organism is consumed (bones, roots, hair); (2) some parts are indigestible and egested as faeces; (3) a large proportion is lost as heat from respiration; (4) energy is used in movement and maintaining body temperature (in endotherms); (5) some energy is lost in excretory products such as urea.
Calculating Efficiency
Ecological efficiency = (energy available after transfer / energy available before transfer) x 100. For example: if producers capture 20,000 kJ m-2 yr-1 and primary consumers receive 2,000 kJ m-2 yr-1, the efficiency is (2000/20000) x 100 = 10%. You may also see net production of consumers calculated as: N = I - (F + R), where I is ingested chemical energy, F is energy lost in faeces, and R is respiratory losses.
--- ### Food Chains and Food Webs A food chain shows a single linear pathway of energy transfer from one organism to the next. A food web is a much more realistic representation, showing multiple interconnected food chains within an ecosystem.
Trophic level 1: Producers (plants, algae, some bacteria). Trophic level 2: Primary consumers (herbivores). Trophic level 3: Secondary consumers (carnivores that eat herbivores). Trophic level 4: Tertiary consumers (carnivores that eat other carnivores). Decomposers are sometimes shown at the side — they break down dead organic matter at every trophic level.
Pyramids of Numbers, Biomass, and Energy
Pyramids of numbers count organisms at each trophic level — these can be inverted (one oak tree supports thousands of insects). Pyramids of biomass show the dry mass at each level — rarely inverted, but possible in aquatic ecosystems where phytoplankton reproduce rapidly. Pyramids of energy are always upright because energy is always lost between trophic levels, never gained. This follows the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
Unlike energy, which flows through an ecosystem and is ultimately lost as heat, nutrients are recycled. The two cycles you need to know in detail are the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. The Carbon Cycle 碳循环
Carbon enters the atmosphere as CO2 through: (1) respiration by plants, animals, and decomposers; (2) combustion of fossil fuels and biomass; (3) volcanic activity. Carbon is removed from the atmosphere through: (1) photosynthesis by plants and phytoplankton; (2) dissolution in oceans, where it forms carbonate rocks. Decomposers (saprobionts) break down dead organic matter, releasing CO2 back into the atmosphere through respiration. Fossilisation of organic matter over millions of years produces coal, oil, and natural gas — carbon stores that are released when burned.
Human Impact on the Carbon Cycle
The combustion of fossil fuels has dramatically increased atmospheric CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution. Deforestation reduces the number of trees available for photosynthesis, further exacerbating the problem. The greenhouse effect — where CO2, methane, and water vapour trap infrared radiation in the atmosphere — leads to global warming and climate change. This is a common essay question in OCR exams: you need to be able to link human activities to specific disruptions in the carbon cycle.
--- ### The Nitrogen Cycle 氮循环 The nitrogen cycle is more complex than the carbon cycle because nitrogen exists in many different chemical forms and requires specific bacteria at each stage.
Atmospheric N2 gas is converted into ammonia (NH3) or ammonium ions (NH4+) by nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Free-living bacteria such as Azotobacter live in the soil. Mutualistic bacteria such as Rhizobium live inside root nodules of leguminous plants (peas, beans, clover) and receive carbohydrates from the plant in exchange for fixed nitrogen. This is a classic example of mutualism in the OCR specification.
Nitrification
Ammonium ions (NH4+) in the soil are oxidised to nitrite ions (NO2-) by Nitrosomonas bacteria, then further oxidised to nitrate ions (NO3-) by Nitrobacter bacteria. Both steps require oxygen, which is why well-aerated soils are essential for nitrification. Nitrates are the form of nitrogen that plants can most easily absorb through their roots by active transport.
Denitrification
Under anaerobic conditions (waterlogged soils), denitrifying bacteria such as Pseudomonas convert nitrate ions back into nitrogen gas (N2), which returns to the atmosphere. This is why waterlogged soils are poor for plant growth — not only is oxygen limited for root respiration, but nitrates are being lost from the soil.
Ammonification
When organisms die or produce waste (urine, faeces), saprobionts (decomposers such as fungi and bacteria) break down the organic nitrogen compounds (proteins, nucleic acids, urea) into ammonium ions. This process releases the nitrogen locked in organic matter back into the soil, making it available for nitrification. Without ammonification, nitrogen would remain trapped in dead organisms indefinitely.

Succession is the directional change in the species composition of a community over time. OCR expects you to know both primary and secondary succession, and to be able to describe the stages in detail.
Primary succession occurs on bare, previously uninhabited ground — such as bare rock after a volcanic eruption, sand dunes, or glacial moraines. Stages: (1) Pioneer species colonise the bare rock. These are hardy organisms like lichens and mosses that can survive with minimal soil and nutrients. (2) Pioneer species weather the rock and, when they die, their organic matter forms a thin layer of soil. (3) This soil allows grasses and small herbaceous plants to colonise. (4) These are replaced by shrubs. (5) Finally, trees colonise — first fast-growing pioneer trees like birch, then slower-growing climax species like oak. The final stable community is called the climax community.
Secondary Succession
Secondary succession occurs on land that already has soil but where the existing community has been removed or destroyed — for example, after a forest fire, flooding, or land clearance for farming. Because soil is already present, secondary succession is much faster than primary succession. The stages are similar but the pioneer species are typically fast-growing grasses and weeds rather than lichens. Within a few decades, the climax community may be re-established.
Features of Succession
During succession: (1) biodiversity (species richness) increases; (2) biomass increases; (3) the number and complexity of food webs increase; (4) abiotic conditions become less hostile (soil depth and nutrient content increase, humidity rises, temperature extremes are moderated); (5) the ecosystem becomes more stable and resilient to change. The climax community is in dynamic equilibrium with the abiotic environment.
Deflected Succession
Human activities can prevent succession from reaching its natural climax community — this is called deflected succession or a plagioclimax. Examples include: (1) grazing by sheep on moorland prevents tree seedlings from establishing; (2) regular mowing of lawns keeps grass at an early successional stage; (3) controlled burning of heathland to maintain heather dominance. Know at least one named example for the exam.
Understanding how populations change over time is a key part of the ecosystems topic. Populations are influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors, and their growth follows predictable patterns.
The carrying capacity (K) is the maximum population size that an ecosystem can sustain indefinitely, given the available resources (food, water, shelter, space). When a population is below carrying capacity, resources are abundant and the population grows. As it approaches K, resources become limiting and growth slows. This produces an S-shaped (sigmoid) growth curve.
Limiting Factors
Population growth is limited by: (1) density-dependent factors — competition for resources, predation, disease, and the accumulation of toxic waste. These factors have a greater effect as population density increases. (2) density-independent factors — natural disasters (fires, floods, volcanic eruptions), extreme weather events, and human activities such as habitat destruction. These affect a population regardless of its size or density.
Predator-Prey Relationships
Predator and prey populations oscillate in a linked cycle. When prey numbers are high, predators have abundant food, so predator numbers increase. As predator numbers rise, more prey are consumed, causing prey numbers to fall. With fewer prey, predator numbers decline due to starvation. This allows prey numbers to recover, and the cycle repeats. Classic examples include the Canadian lynx and snowshoe hare, recorded from fur-trapping data.
Conservation vs Preservation
OCR frequently asks about the difference between conservation and preservation. Conservation is the sustainable management of ecosystems so that natural resources can be used without running out — it allows controlled human use. Preservation is the protection of ecosystems so that they are kept exactly as they are, with no human interference at all — think of nature reserves where human access is completely prohibited. Both have their place depending on the ecosystem and the species involved.

"Describe" — say what happens, no explanation needed. Give a step-by-step account. "Explain" — give reasons why. Use "because" or "so that" in your answer. "Suggest" — apply your knowledge to a new context. There may not be a single right answer, but your reasoning must be biologically sound. "Evaluate" — give both sides of an argument and reach a conclusion. Include limitations and uncertainties.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Confusing GPP with NPP. Remember: NPP = GPP - R. Mistake 2: Saying energy is "created" or "made" — energy is transferred, never created (First Law of Thermodynamics). Mistake 3: Forgetting to name the specific bacteria in the nitrogen cycle (Rhizobium, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Pseudomonas). Names earn marks. Mistake 4: Writing that all pyramids are always upright — only energy pyramids are always upright. Mistake 5: Confusing conservation with preservation. They are not the same.
记住:NPP = GPP - R。
Structuring Long-Answer Questions
For 5-6 mark questions: plan for 30 seconds, then write continuously. OCR Ecosystems long-answer questions often cover the nitrogen cycle or succession. Start with definitions, then go through the stages or steps in chronological order, and end with a concluding statement that ties back to the question. For data analysis questions: quote figures from the graph or table, describe the trend in words, and then explain the biological reason for the trend.

Key Formulae to Memorise
1. NPP = GPP - R (Net Primary Production = Gross Primary Production - Respiratory Losses). 2. Net production of consumers: N = I - (F + R). 3. Efficiency of energy transfer = (energy after transfer / energy before transfer) x 100. 4. Percentage efficiency = (biomass in higher trophic level / biomass in lower trophic level) x 100. Memorise these and you can pick up easy calculation marks in every exam.
