Social Influence is a core module in Edexcel A-Level Psychology Paper 1, covering Conformity, Obedience, Minority Influence, and Social Change. This topic tests both your recall of classic experiments (AO1) and your ability to critically evaluate methodology and ethics (AO3). This guide breaks down each sub-topic's key theories, landmark studies, and common exam pitfalls to help you score top marks on structured essay questions.
Types and Explanations of Conformity
Kelman (1958) identified three types of conformity: Compliance involves public behaviour change with private disagreement, lasting only while group pressure exists; Identification involves adopting group norms to fit in, changing both behaviour and beliefs temporarily; Internalisation is the deepest form where individuals accept group views both publicly and privately, persisting even without group presence. In exams, distinguish these by asking: "Did private attitudes change?" and "How long does it last?"
Deutsch and Gerard (1955) proposed two explanations: Informational Social Influence (ISI) occurs in ambiguous situations where individuals rely on others as information sources to make correct judgments; Normative Social Influence (NSI) stems from the need for acceptance and fear of rejection. In AO3 evaluation, point out that ISI and NSI often operate simultaneously (Asch's participants may have both doubted their judgment and feared standing out), making them difficult to disentangle. Lucas et al. (2006) found ISI effects strengthen with task difficulty, supporting ISI, though individual differences in self-confidence are under-explored.
Asch's Conformity Research
Asch (1951, 1955) conducted one of psychology's most iconic experiments on conformity. 123 American male undergraduates participated in a "visual judgment" task in groups of 1 real participant and 6-8 confederates. On critical trials where confederates unanimously gave obviously wrong answers, 75% of participants conformed at least once, with an overall conformity rate of 36.8%. A control group (alone) made errors only 0.04% of the time. Post-experiment interviews revealed most attributed their conformity to "not wanting to appear strange" (NSI) rather than genuinely believing the wrong answers.
Asch further identified three situational variables affecting conformity: group size plateaus at 3 confederates; breaking unanimity (even one dissenter) drops conformity from 36.8% to just 5.5%; and increased task difficulty strengthens ISI. Asch's high experimental control ensures strong internal validity, but the all-male undergraduate sample introduces gender and age bias (beta bias). Critically, the 1950s McCarthy-era American context may have artificially elevated conformity rates, a key temporal and cultural bias evaluation point.
Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment
Zimbardo's (1973) Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) demonstrated the powerful influence of social roles on behaviour. 24 mentally healthy male students with no criminal records were randomly assigned as "guards" or "prisoners" in a simulated prison in Stanford's basement. Planned for two weeks, it was terminated after just 6 days due to extreme behaviour: guards became abusive (enforcing sleep deprivation, push-ups as punishment), while prisoners showed emotional breakdowns. Zimbardo attributed this to identification with social roles leading to de-individuation.
AO3 evaluation: Random assignment was a key strength, ensuring group differences stemmed from roles rather than personality, boosting internal validity. However, Reicher and Haslam's (2006) BBC Prison Study failed to fully replicate findings, with prisoners collectively rebelling, challenging SPE conclusions. Moreover, Zimbardo's dual role as prison superintendent and researcher caused severe experimenter bias, as his own immersion in the role likely shaped outcomes. Despite ethical concerns (no right to withdraw, psychological harm), SPE's groundbreaking contributions to prison reform cannot be ignored.
Milgram's Obedience Research
Milgram (1963) sought to explain how Nazi soldiers obeyed orders to commit atrocities in WWII. 40 male volunteers at Yale University participated in a "learning and memory" experiment, instructed to deliver electric shocks to a "learner" (confederate) from 15V to 450V, labeled "XXX Danger." Despite the learner's screams of pain (150V), heart complaints (300V), and eventual silence (330V), 65% of participants administered the maximum 450V when prompted by the experimenter. This is one of psychology's most disturbing findings: ordinary people can commit destructive acts under authority commands.
Milgram also tested situational variables affecting obedience: proximity variations showed obedience dropped to 40% when learner and teacher were in the same room, and to 30% with touch proximity (forcing the teacher's hand onto the shock plate); location changes from Yale to a run-down downtown office reduced obedience to 47.5%; uniform variations revealed that when the experimenter was called away and replaced by an "ordinary member of the public" confederate, obedience plummeted to 20%. These prove obedience depends on situational factors, not personality.
Agentic State and Legitimacy of Authority
Milgram proposed two explanations. Agentic state theory holds that individuals switch from an autonomous state to an agentic state, viewing themselves as instruments of authority rather than independent actors, thereby relinquishing personal responsibility. Moral strain, a byproduct, arises as lingering discomfort managed through denial or minimising consequences. Legitimacy of authority explains why certain figures (lab-coated scientists, police, teachers) command greater obedience: social hierarchies grant specific roles the right to issue directives.
AO3 evaluation: Agentic state theory is supported by participants' verbal behaviour in Milgram's studies: many said "if it's his fault, I'm excused," demonstrating responsibility displacement. However, it cannot explain why 35% fully refused obedience (individual differences unexplained). Legitimacy of authority has cultural limitations: Kilham and Mann (1974) found only 28% obedience in Australia, and collectivist cultures may interpret authority differently. Adorno's Authoritarian Personality offers an alternative dispositional explanation: individuals raised with harsh discipline develop high F-scale traits, showing greater obedience to authority and contempt for the weak.
Resistance to Social Influence
Social support is the most powerful factor in resisting conformity and obedience. Asch already showed one ally breaking unanimity drops conformity from 36.8% to 5.5%. For obedience, Gamson et al. (1982) found that when participants formed groups facing unethical orders, 88% collectively rebelled. Social support works through two pathways: providing alternative perspectives disrupts ISI, and providing allies reduces fear of rejection from NSI.
Locus of Control (LOC), proposed by Rotter (1966), distinguishes internals (believing behaviour determines outcomes) from externals (attributing to luck or external forces). High internals are more confident, seek less social approval, and make independent decisions, thus showing greater resistance. Spector (1983) found a negative correlation between internality and obedience. However, LOC's predictive power is stronger in familiar situations: in novel environments, even high internals may temporarily rely on others (ISI dominance). LOC is a continuum, not a dichotomy, and Twenge et al.'s (2004) meta-analysis shows Americans have become increasingly external over 40 years, suggesting LOC shifts with societal changes.
Minority Influence and Social Change
Moscovici's (1969) blue-green slide experiment challenged the assumption that only majorities influence others. Four real participants and two confederate minorities judged slide colours. When the minority consistently answered "green" (slides were actually blue), 8.42% of real participants followed at least once; when the minority was inconsistent, influence dropped to 1.25%. Moscovici proposed minorities exert influence through consistency, commitment, and flexibility, triggering deeper cognitive processing in the majority (conversion theory), producing delayed, private attitude change distinct from immediate public conformity to majorities.
Social Change is explained through minority influence as a gradual process driving societal progress. Historically, environmentalism, women's suffrage, and LGBTQ+ rights all began with committed minorities, progressing through stages: drawing attention, consistent messaging, cognitive conflict, the augmentation principle, snowball effect, and finally social cryptomnesia (people forget the change's origin but accept new norms). Exams often connect this to earlier theories, e.g., using NSI to explain why more people join social change movements later (conformity pressure).
Exam Tips and Revision Strategy
建议使用 PEEL 结构:Point(点明理论/研究), Evidence(引用实验数据), Explanation(解释机制), Link(链接问题)。
Structured answer framework: Edexcel 8-mark and 12-mark essays require balanced AO1 (description) and AO3 (evaluation). For 12-mark questions, aim for 6 AO1 and 6 AO3 marks. Use the PEEL structure: Point (state theory/study), Evidence (cite experimental data), Explanation (explain mechanism), Link (connect to question). Every evaluation point should include at least one supporting study and a balance discussion (methodology, ethics, cultural bias).
High-frequency evaluation angles: Asch (sample bias, historical context, deception ethics, low ecological validity); Milgram (experimenter bias, demand characteristics, lack of protection from harm, Orne and Holland's demand characteristics critique); Zimbardo (dual researcher role, replication failure, Reicher and Haslam 2006 counter-evidence); social influence theories overall (cultural differences, gender bias, individual differences, determinism vs free will). Cross-referencing studies in essays demonstrates deeper understanding, e.g., using Asch's unanimity variable to critique the experimenter's persistent role in Milgram.
Avoid common mistakes: (1) Confusing conformity (peer pressure) with obedience (authority commands); (2) Treating internalisation as permanent change: internalisation is durable but not irreversible; (3) Using Milgram's study as direct support for agentic state theory: Milgram never directly measured agentic state, making it a post-hoc explanation; (4) Ignoring ISI and NSI complementarity, citing one as exclusive explanation; (5) Attributing SPE results to personality when random assignment precludes this interpretation.
Time management: Paper 1 is 2 hours total, with Social Influence allocated roughly 35-40 minutes. Spend 2 minutes planning key study names and evaluation points to avoid omissions. Allocate 15-18 minutes for 8-mark questions and 20-22 minutes for 12-mark questions. Prioritise your strongest questions and flag uncertain ones for later review.
