Common Qs: Calculations + Analysis + Practical
The definition of electric current is straightforward: the rate of flow of charge. The equation I = ΔQ/Δt is the first formula you learn in electricity, and it underpins everything that follows. 一个重要的微观公式 I = nAve 连接了宏观电流和微观电子运动:n是自由电子密度(number density of charge carriers),A是横截面积(cross-sectional area),v是漂移速度(drift velocity),e是电子电荷量(elementary charge, 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ C)。 Edexcel exams love testing order-of-magnitude estimates of drift velocity. For instance, in a copper wire with free electron density around 10²⁸ m⁻³, when the current is 1A, the drift velocity is only about 10⁻⁴ m/s — far slower than your intuition might suggest. In reality, the electric field propagates at near light speed, but the electrons themselves drift slowly. This often appears in multiple-choice questions, so remember it well. --- ### 2. 欧姆定律与电阻 Ohm's Law and Resistance V = IR 是电学中最著名的公式,但很多同学忽略了它的前提条件:Ohm's Law只在温度恒定时成立(only applies when temperature is constant)。 The condition for Ohm's Law is constant temperature. For metallic conductors, as temperature rises, ionic lattice vibrations intensify, causing more frequent electron collisions and thus higher resistance. This explains why a light bulb draws a larger current when first switched on: the filament has lower resistance when cold and higher resistance when hot. Resistivity is an intrinsic property independent of dimensions. The experiment to determine the resistivity of a wire is a high-frequency exam topic: measure diameter with a micrometer, measure length with a metre rule, connect the circuit, vary length and record V and I, then plot R against L — the gradient equals ρ/A, from which ρ can be calculated. --- ### 3. Kirchhoff's two laws are the foundation of all circuit analysis. Without them, you cannot analyze any circuit beyond the simplest series or parallel arrangement. Kirchhoff's First Law (KCL): The total current entering a junction equals the total current leaving it. This is essentially the conservation of charge — charge cannot be created or destroyed at a junction. When solving problems, treat each junction as a "current checkpoint": whatever flows in must flow out. Kirchhoff's Second Law (KVL): Around any closed loop, the algebraic sum of all EMFs equals the sum of all p.d. drops. This reflects conservation of energy — going around a loop and returning to the starting point, the potential must be the same. For complex circuits: label all branch currents with assumed directions and variables (e.g., I₁, I₂, I₃), write KCL equations at junctions, write KVL equations for each independent loop, then solve simultaneously. If a calculated current is negative, the actual direction is opposite to your assumption — this does not affect the magnitude. --- ### 4. The potential divider is one of the most frequently examined circuit configurations in Edexcel. Two resistors in series, with input voltage V_in, the output voltage V_out = V_in × R₂/(R₁+R₂). The formula looks simple but has countless variations. The core idea: resistance divides voltage proportionally. If R₁=R₂, the output is exactly half the input. If R₂ is much larger than R₁, the output approaches the input voltage. This is a favourite exam topic. Replace one resistor with a thermistor or LDR and the potential divider becomes a temperature or light sensor. NTC thermistor: temperature rises → resistance drops → if placed as R₁, V_out increases with temperature. LDR: more light → lower resistance → can be used as a light-controlled switch. V_in-4V。 The concept of electric potential must also be understood: the potential at a point is the potential difference between that point and a reference point (usually 0V). In a potential divider, if the potential at the midpoint is 4V and the bottom of the lower resistor is at 0V, then the p.d. across the lower resistor is 4V. --- ### 5. Every real power source has internal resistance r. The terminal p.d. V = ε - Ir, where ε is the EMF, I is the current, and r is the internal resistance. The terminal voltage drops as current increases because r consumes part of the voltage. 得到y轴截距=ε(y-intercept equals EMF),斜率=-r(gradient equals negative internal resistance)。注意:V接在可变电阻两端(not across the cell itself才能得到正确数据)。 The experiment to determine EMF and internal resistance is a high-frequency Unit 3 topic. Method: vary the external variable resistor, record V and I pairs, plot V against I. The y-intercept gives ε and the gradient gives -r. Note: connect the voltmeter across the variable resistor, not the cell itself, to get correct readings. --- ### 6.
I is the same
V splits proportionally
R_total = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + ...
Total R > any individual R
并联 Parallel
V is the same
I splits inversely with R
1/R_total = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃
Total R < smallest individual R
算总电流:用V = IR_total算出干路总电流 3. 1. Simplify: combine series and parallel resistors step by step to find equivalent resistance. 2. Calculate total current: use V = IR_total to find the main current. 3. Expand backwards: restore the circuit step by step, using current divider or voltage divider formulas to find branch currents and voltages. 4. Verify: substitute results back into KCL or KVL to check consistency. In exams, P = I²R is often used to determine which component generates more heat. In series, same current → larger R dissipates more power. In parallel, same voltage → smaller R dissipates more power (because current is larger). This is extremely useful for explaining circuit faults and safety issues. --- ### 7. Many students use them interchangeably, but they are distinct concepts. **(3) KVL符号混乱 Sign errors in KVL**: 绕行方向(direction of traversal)要自洽。 Consistency is everything — pick clockwise, stick with it, and you will never get the signs wrong. Always convert to SI units before plugging numbers into formulas. Top Tips
