Supply and demand form the very foundation of economics. Whether you are tackling Paper 1 or Paper 2 of A-Level Edexcel Economics, supply-demand analysis is everywhere: from market equilibrium to price elasticity, from indirect taxes to subsidies, nearly every microeconomics question requires you to deploy the supply-demand model. This bilingual guide systematically breaks down five core topics -- supply, demand, market equilibrium, price elasticity of demand (PED), and price elasticity of supply (PES) -- with exam techniques to help you secure top marks in your A-Level Economics exams.
Demand
关键在于区分需求量的变化(movement along the demand curve)和需求的变化(shift of the demand curve)。
Demand refers to the quantity of a good that consumers are willing and able to purchase at a given price level. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as price rises, quantity demanded falls, and as price falls, quantity demanded rises. This inverse relationship is represented graphically as a downward-sloping demand curve. A critical distinction for exams is between a movement along the demand curve (caused by a change in the good's own price) and a shift of the demand curve (caused by changes in demand determinants).
Demand determinants include: income (rising income generally increases demand for normal goods but decreases demand for inferior goods), prices of related goods (a rise in the price of a substitute increases demand; a rise in the price of a complement decreases demand), consumer tastes and preferences, population size and demographics, and consumer expectations about future prices. Edexcel exam questions frequently test your ability to identify how a change in one determinant shifts the demand curve. Follow the core answer structure: identify the changing factor, determine the direction of the shift (left or right), and explain the reasoning clearly.
Supply
与需求类似,区分供给量的变化(movement along the supply curve)和供给的变化(shift of the supply curve)至关重要。
Supply refers to the quantity of a good that producers are willing and able to offer at a given price level. The law of supply states that as price rises, quantity supplied increases, and as price falls, quantity supplied decreases. This positive relationship is shown as an upward-sloping supply curve on a diagram. As with demand, distinguishing between a movement along the supply curve and a shift of the supply curve is essential for accurate exam responses.
Supply determinants include: costs of production (rising wages, raw material costs, or energy prices shift supply left), technology (technological advances improve productivity, shifting supply right), indirect taxes and subsidies (taxes increase costs and shift supply left; subsidies reduce costs and shift supply right), the number of firms in the market, natural conditions (such as weather for agricultural goods), and producer expectations about future prices. Edexcel exams frequently feature questions analysing the impact of taxes or subsidies on supply. Always draw the new supply curve and clearly label the tax wedge or subsidy area on your diagram for full marks.
Market Equilibrium
Market equilibrium occurs when quantity supplied equals quantity demanded, and the corresponding price is the equilibrium price. At this price there is neither excess demand nor excess supply: the market clears spontaneously. The price mechanism performs three core functions: the signalling function (prices convey information about scarcity to producers and consumers), the incentive function (high prices incentivise production; low prices incentivise consumption), and the rationing function (prices allocate scarce resources to those most willing and able to pay).
When either curve shifts, you must analyse the new equilibrium. For example, an increase in demand (rightward shift) raises both the equilibrium price and quantity. An increase in supply (rightward shift) lowers the equilibrium price but raises quantity. When both curves shift simultaneously, analyse each change individually before synthesising the overall effect. A common high-scoring trap in exams: candidates draw the new curve but forget to label the old and new equilibrium points, price direction arrows, and quantity direction arrows. A complete supply-demand analysis answer must include: a properly drawn and labelled diagram, clear P1/Q1 and P2/Q2 markers, arrows indicating the direction of change, and written explanation of the mechanism.
Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to changes in price. The formula is: PED = percentage change in quantity demanded / percentage change in price. PED is always negative (due to the law of demand), but we typically discuss its absolute value. Classification: |PED| > 1 indicates elastic demand (quantity demanded changes proportionally more than price), |PED| < 1 indicates inelastic demand, and |PED| = 1 is unit elastic. Perfectly elastic (|PED| approaches infinity) and perfectly inelastic (|PED| = 0) are the two extreme cases.
Factors influencing PED include: the number and closeness of substitutes (more and closer substitutes mean greater elasticity), the type of good (necessities tend to be inelastic; luxuries tend to be elastic), the proportion of income spent on the good (larger shares of income mean greater elasticity), and the time period considered (long run is more elastic than short run, as consumers have more time to adjust their behaviour). The most important Edexcel exam application is the relationship between PED and total revenue: if demand is elastic (|PED| > 1), lowering price increases total revenue; if demand is inelastic (|PED| < 1), raising price increases total revenue. Always support your answer with a numerical example: say a good sells 100 units at £10 each (revenue = £1000). If price drops 20% to £8 and |PED| = 2, quantity demanded rises 40% to 140 units, giving new revenue of £8 x 140 = £1120 -- revenue has increased.
Price elasticity of supply (PES) measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to changes in price. The formula is: PES = percentage change in quantity supplied / percentage change in price. PES is always positive (reflecting the law of supply). When PES > 1, supply is elastic; when PES < 1, supply is inelastic. Key factors influencing PES include: the production time period (shorter production times allow more elastic supply), spare capacity (firms with spare capacity can expand output quickly), inventory levels (high stocks make supply more elastic), the substitutability of factors of production (easier access to inputs means greater elasticity), and the time horizon (long-run supply is more elastic than short-run supply).
The distinction between the short run and the long run is central to PES exam questions. In the short run, firms have at least one fixed factor of production (such as factory space), limiting capacity and resulting in low PES. In the long run, all factors are variable: firms can expand, and new firms can enter the market, so PES is higher. Typical Edexcel exam questions include: agricultural price volatility (inelastic supply causes large price swings), short-run housing market rigidity (despite surging demand, existing stock is limited and new construction takes time), and high long-run supply elasticity in technology industries. Answer strategy: draw two distinct supply curves, the short-run curve being steeper (inelastic) and the long-run curve being flatter (elastic), then explain using industry-specific characteristics.
Exam Techniques and Common Pitfalls
第二,使用Edexcel评分术语:对于4分分析题,使用"chain of reasoning"(推理链)结构,每一步逻辑连接用"this leads to"、"therefore"、"consequently"等词汇。第三,对于8分或12分评估题,除了供需分析外,必须讨论弹性如何影响结果大小,例如"the extent of the price increase depends on the PED and PES"。
In A-Level Edexcel Economics, supply-demand analysis appears across multiple question types: multiple-choice (Paper 1 Section A), data response (Paper 1 Section B), and essay questions (Paper 2). Here are the key exam techniques: First, draw diagrams that are large, clear, and fully labelled. Every supply-demand diagram must include axis labels (Price and Quantity), curve labels (D and S), equilibrium points (P1/Q1), new equilibrium points after any shift (P2/Q2), and direction arrows. Second, use Edexcel mark-scheme terminology: for 4-mark analysis questions, build a chain of reasoning using linking words like "this leads to", "therefore", and "consequently". Third, for 8-mark or 12-mark evaluation questions, go beyond basic supply-demand analysis: discuss how elasticity determines the magnitude of outcomes, for example, "the extent of the price increase depends on the relative PED and PES".
Common mistakes include: confusing a change in demand with a change in quantity demanded (attributing a price-change movement to a curve shift), forgetting the ceteris paribus assumption, inverting the numerator and denominator when calculating PED, overlooking the fact that the incidence of an indirect tax depends on the relative elasticities of PED and PES (tax burden analysis), and drawing the new curve without labelling the new equilibrium point. Before the exam, practise with the last five years of Edexcel past papers, focusing especially on supply-demand analysis questions. Pay particular attention to how the new behavioural economics content introduced in the 2023 and 2024 specifications can be integrated into supply-demand model questions.
