Directional Selection
Favours individuals at one extreme of the phenotypic range. The mean shifts toward that extreme. Example: antibiotic resistance in bacteria — only resistant individuals survive.
Stabilising Selection
Favours the intermediate phenotype and eliminates extremes. The mean stays the same but standard deviation decreases. Example: human birth weight — babies of intermediate weight have the highest survival rate.
Disruptive Selection
Favours both extremes at the expense of the intermediate. Can lead to speciation. Example: beak size in finches where both very large and very small beaks are advantageous for different food sources.
A common exam question asks you to sketch and label the normal distribution curves before and after each type of selection. Remember that the x-axis represents the trait value and the y-axis represents frequency. For directional selection, the peak shifts left or right; for stabilising selection, the peak becomes narrower and taller; for disruptive selection, the curve becomes bimodal. Speciation is the formation of new species from existing ones. A species is defined as a group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Allopatric speciation occurs when a population is geographically isolated, preventing gene flow between the separated groups. 1. **Geographic isolation (地理隔离)**: A physical barrier (mountain range, river, ocean) separates a population into two or more groups. 2. **Prevention of gene flow (基因流动阻断)**: The separated populations can no longer interbreed. 3. **Different selection pressures (不同选择压力)**: Each population experiences different environmental conditions, leading to different advantageous alleles. 4. **Accumulation of genetic differences (遗传差异积累)**: Over many generations, mutations and natural selection cause the populations to diverge genetically. 5. **Reproductive isolation (生殖隔离)**: Eventually the populations become so different that they can no longer interbreed to produce fertile offspring even if the physical barrier is removed. Edexcel考试特别喜欢考查Darwin's finches(Darwin的雀鸟)和Galapagos tortoises(Galapagos象龟)作为异域物种形成的例子。 Sympatric speciation occurs without geographic isolation, within the same habitat. This is less common and often involves polyploidy in plants or behavioural isolation in animals. Example: In the apple maggot fly (Rhagoletis pomonella), some flies shifted from hawthorn to apple trees as hosts. Because flies mate on their host plant, this created reproductive isolation between the two groups despite them living in the same area. ## Hardy-Weinberg Principle / Hardy-Weinberg原理 The Hardy-Weinberg principle states that allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of other evolutionary influences. This provides a null hypothesis for detecting evolutionary change. The Hardy-Weinberg equation has two forms: **For alleles:** p + q = 1 - p = frequency of the dominant allele - q = frequency of the recessive allele **For genotypes:** p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1 - p^2 = frequency of homozygous dominant genotype - 2pq = frequency of heterozygous genotype - q^2 = frequency of homozygous recessive genotype ### The Five Conditions / 五个条件 For a population to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, ALL five conditions must be met: 1. **No mutations (无突变)**: The gene pool is not modified by mutations. 2. **Random mating (随机交配)**: Individuals mate randomly within the population. 3. **No gene flow (无基因流动)**: No movement of alleles into or out of the population through migration. 4. **Large population size (大种群规模)**: The population is infinitely large so that genetic drift does not occur. 5. **No natural selection (无自然选择)**: All genotypes have equal reproductive success. In a population of 1000 rabbits, 160 have white fur (recessive trait). Calculate the frequency of the heterozygous genotype. Step 1: q^2 = 160/1000 = 0.16 Step 2: q = sqrt(0.16) = 0.4 Step 3: p = 1 - 0.4 = 0.6 Step 4: 2pq = 2 x 0.6 x 0.4 = 0.48 Answer: 48% of the population is heterozygous. This means 480 rabbits carry one copy of the white fur allele. Genetic drift is the random change in allele frequencies due to chance events, particularly significant in small populations. Unlike natural selection, genetic drift is non-directional and can lead to the loss of alleles even if they are advantageous. **Founder Effect (奠基者效应)**: Occurs when a small group of individuals colonises a new area. The gene pool of the new population is a random subset of the original population's gene pool. Example: The Amish population in Pennsylvania shows a higher frequency of Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (polydactyly) because the founding population happened to carry this allele. **Bottleneck Effect (瓶颈效应)**: Occurs when a population undergoes a dramatic reduction in size due to a catastrophic event. The survivors' gene pool may not represent the original population. Example: Northern elephant seals were hunted to near extinction (about 20 individuals). Although their population has recovered to over 100,000, they show very low genetic diversity. Gene flow is the movement of alleles between populations through migration and interbreeding. Gene flow tends to reduce genetic differences between populations, counteracting the effects of natural selection and genetic drift.

The Edexcel specification expects you to be able to describe and evaluate multiple lines of evidence supporting the theory of evolution. Fossils provide direct evidence of organisms that lived in the past. The fossil record shows: - Organisms have changed over time (gradualism) - Simpler organisms appear in older rocks, more complex organisms in younger rocks - Transitional forms (e.g., Archaeopteryx — links reptiles and birds) - Many species that once existed are now extinct ### Comparative Anatomy / 比较解剖学 **Homologous structures (同源结构)**: Structures with a common evolutionary origin but different functions. Example: the pentadactyl limb in vertebrates — the forelimbs of humans, whales, bats, and horses all share the same basic bone structure (humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges) despite serving different functions. **Analogous structures (同功结构)**: Structures with similar functions but different evolutionary origins. Example: wings of birds and insects — both used for flight but evolved independently (convergent evolution). DNA sequencing and protein analysis provide powerful evidence for evolution: - Closely related species have more similar DNA sequences - All organisms use the same genetic code (DNA, mRNA, tRNA, codons) - Cytochrome c and other conserved proteins can be compared across species to construct phylogenetic trees - Mutations accumulate at a relatively constant rate (molecular clock), allowing estimation of divergence times Antibiotic resistance is a classic example of natural selection in action and a commonly tested application in Edexcel exams. The process: 1. Within a bacterial population, random mutations produce some individuals with resistance to a specific antibiotic. 2. When the antibiotic is applied, non-resistant bacteria are killed. 3. Resistant bacteria survive and reproduce rapidly (bacteria can divide every 20 minutes). 4. Vertical gene transmission passes resistance alleles to offspring. 5. Horizontal gene transmission (conjugation, transduction, transformation) can spread resistance genes between different bacteria. 6. Over time, the population becomes predominantly resistant — the antibiotic becomes ineffective. Factors accelerating antibiotic resistance: - Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in medicine - Use of antibiotics in agriculture (livestock) - Patients not completing prescribed antibiotic courses - Poor infection control in hospitals Solutions include developing new antibiotics, using bacteriophages, improving hygiene, and prescribing antibiotics only when necessary. The hierarchical classification system (Linnaean system) organises organisms into increasingly specific groups: Domain (域) → Kingdom (界) → Phylum (门) → Class (纲) → Order (目) → Family (科) → Genus (属) → Species (种) The three domains are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. The binomial naming system uses Genus species format (e.g., Homo sapiens), always italicised or underlined. Phylogenetic trees represent evolutionary relationships between organisms based on shared characteristics or molecular data. Key terminology for interpreting phylogenetic trees: - **Root (根)**: The common ancestor of all organisms in the tree - **Node (节点)**: A branching point representing a speciation event - **Clade (支序群)**: A group of organisms that includes an ancestor and all its descendants - **Sister groups (姐妹群)**: Two lineages that share an immediate common ancestor In Edexcel exams, you may be asked to analyse phylogenetic trees, identify the most recent common ancestor of given species, or explain why molecular evidence (DNA, RNA, proteins) has led to reclassification of some organisms.
Exam Tip 1
When explaining natural selection, always use the phrase "allele frequency changes over generations" to get full marks.
Exam Tip 2
For Hardy-Weinberg calculations, always show q^2 first, then sqrt to find q. Many marks are lost by mixing up p and q.
Exam Tip 3
Speciation questions require mentioning reproductive isolation. Without this term, you cannot get the top band marks.
