Chemical bonding is one of the most fundamental and important topics in A-Level AQA Chemistry. Understanding how atoms bond, how electrons are distributed, and the nature of intermolecular forces will not only help you ace multiple-choice questions but also lay essential groundwork for thermodynamics, organic chemistry, and transition metals. In every AQA exam series, there is at least one 6-8 mark "compare and explain" question devoted to bonding theory. Whether you are starting AS revision or pushing for A2, this bilingual guide will strengthen your bonding theory and sharpen your exam technique.
Ionic Bonding
Ionic bonding is formed by the transfer of electrons between a metal and a non-metal atom. The metal atom (typically Group 1 or 2) loses one or more valence electrons to form a positive ion (cation), while the non-metal atom (typically Group 6 or 7) gains electrons to form a negative ion (anion). The cations and anions are held together by strong electrostatic attraction, arranging themselves in a regular crystal lattice — the ionic crystal. AQA exams explicitly emphasise the concept of a "giant ionic lattice": each ion is surrounded by oppositely charged ions, and the electrostatic attraction is omnidirectional. As a result, ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points, do not conduct electricity in the solid state, but can conduct when molten or dissolved in water. The strength of an ionic bond depends on ionic charge and ionic radius — the greater the charge and the smaller the radius, the stronger the bond and the larger the lattice enthalpy. For example, MgO contains Mg²⁺ and O²⁻, both with a charge of ±2 and relatively small radii, giving MgO a melting point of 2852°C — far higher than NaCl (801°C), where Na⁺ and Cl⁻ carry only ±1 charge. This concept directly links to A2 Born-Haber cycles and lattice enthalpy calculations.
Covalent Bonding
Covalent bonding is formed when two non-metal atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. Atoms share electron pairs to achieve a stable electron configuration (usually the octet rule). In the AQA specification, the core concepts include: single bonds (one shared pair), double bonds (two shared pairs), triple bonds (three shared pairs), and dative covalent bonds — where both shared electrons originate from the same atom, as in NH₄⁺ where the nitrogen atom donates a lone pair to H⁺. You must be proficient at drawing Lewis structures (dot-and-cross diagrams) that accurately show the arrangement of outer-shell electrons. Covalent compounds are classified into simple molecular structures and giant covalent structures. Simple molecules (e.g., H₂O, CO₂, NH₃) have only weak van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonds between molecules, resulting in low melting and boiling points. Giant covalent structures (e.g., diamond, graphite, silicon dioxide) consist of countless atoms linked by covalent bonds into a three-dimensional network, giving them extremely high melting points and hardness. Graphite conducts electricity because each carbon atom forms only three sigma bonds, leaving the remaining p electron to form a delocalised pi system — a classic example of structure determining properties, and a guaranteed application question in AQA papers.
Metallic Bonding
Metallic bonding is the bonding between metal atoms. Its classical model is "positive ions in a sea of delocalised electrons": metal atoms lose their outer valence electrons to form layers of positive ions, while the released electrons move freely throughout the metallic structure (delocalised). It is the presence of these delocalised electrons that gives metals their distinctive physical properties: excellent electrical and thermal conductivity (because electrons can move freely); malleability and ductility (because layers of positive ions can slide past each other with delocalised electrons acting as a "lubricant" without breaking); and generally high melting and boiling points. In AQA exams, the strength of metallic bonding depends on two core factors: the charge of the metal ion and the ionic radius. Group 1 metals (e.g., sodium) contribute only one valence electron to the delocalised sea, resulting in weaker metallic bonds and lower melting points (sodium just 98°C). Group 2 metals (e.g., magnesium, melting point 650°C) and Group 3 metals (e.g., aluminium, melting point 660°C) have more delocalised electrons, producing stronger metallic bonds and higher melting points. Transition metals often have exceptionally high melting points because d-orbital electrons also contribute to delocalisation — tungsten, for instance, melts at 3422°C. This concept reappears in the AQA transition metals topic at A2.
Electronegativity and Bond Polarity
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the bonding pair of electrons in a covalent bond. The Pauling scale is the most commonly used measure: fluorine has the highest electronegativity (4.0), followed by oxygen (3.5), nitrogen (3.0), and chlorine (3.0). When two atoms with different electronegativities form a covalent bond, the electron cloud is pulled towards the more electronegative atom, producing a polar covalent bond — one end carries a partial negative charge (δ-) and the other a partial positive charge (δ+). The greater the electronegativity difference, the more polar the bond. If the difference is sufficiently large (typically >1.7), the bond is no longer considered covalent but ionic. AQA requires students not only to judge bond polarity but also to determine whether an entire molecule has a permanent dipole. For example, although each C=O bond in CO₂ is polar, the molecule is linear and symmetric, so the dipoles cancel out, making CO₂ non-polar. In contrast, H₂O is bent, the dipoles cannot cancel, and it is a polar molecule. Another classic exam trap is CCl₄: each C-Cl bond is highly polar, but the tetrahedral symmetry causes all dipoles to cancel completely, making the molecule non-polar overall. Always use three-dimensional VSEPR theory to judge molecular polarity, not just individual bond polarity.
Intermolecular Forces
Intermolecular forces are the attractive forces between molecules. They are much weaker than the covalent and ionic bonds within molecules, but they play a crucial role in determining physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, and solubility. The AQA specification requires mastery of three types: First, London dispersion forces (also called instantaneous dipole-induced dipole forces), which exist between all molecules and arise from temporary asymmetric electron distributions caused by electron movement. The more electrons a molecule has and the larger its surface area, the stronger the dispersion forces — this explains why, among the halogens, F₂ is a gas while I₂ is a solid. Second, permanent dipole-permanent dipole forces, which exist only between polar molecules. Third, hydrogen bonding, the strongest type of intermolecular force, occurring only when a hydrogen atom is bonded to a highly electronegative N, O, or F atom. Hydrogen bonding explains why H₂O boils at 100°C while H₂S boils at -60°C, why ice is less dense than liquid water (hydrogen bonds in the solid state create an open tetrahedral structure), and why the DNA double helix is stable (hydrogen bonds between base pairs). AQA exams frequently ask you to explain boiling point trends by intermolecular force type — your answer must name the specific force(s) at work, not just say "intermolecular forces" generically.
Study Tips
To master the bonding chapter, focus on four areas: (1) Practice drawing structural diagrams of NaCl, MgO, CO₂, H₂O, NH₃, diamond, graphite, and SiO₂ until you can sketch their bonding structures from memory for any compound you encounter; (2) Build the "bonding-structure-properties" triad logic: each bonding type corresponds to a certain structure, which in turn determines specific physical properties — this is a guaranteed 4-6 mark reasoning question in every AQA exam series; (3) Create a comparison table covering ionic, covalent (simple molecular), covalent (giant structure), and metallic bonding — comparing particle types, bonding types, melting and boiling points, conductivity, and solubility; (4) Past-paper "compare and explain" questions (e.g., "Explain why MgO has a higher melting point than NaCl", "Explain why H₂O has a higher boiling point than H₂S") are your priority practice targets — build your answers with precise scientific terminology such as "electrostatic attraction", "delocalised electrons", and "lattice enthalpy". Vague wording will cost you marks directly.
