Atomic structure is the foundation of A-Level Chemistry and the very first topic tested in AQA Physical Chemistry I. Whether you are a new student just starting A-Level or a candidate racing towards the final exam, mastering atomic structure helps you understand periodicity, bonding, and redox — and is key to scoring high on Paper 1. This guide systematically covers five core topics from subatomic particles to TOF mass spectrometry, bilingual and exam-focused, so you can study with confidence.
Subatomic Particles: The Building Blocks
Atoms consist of three fundamental particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. You must memorise their relative masses and charges precisely — this is the most basic yet frequently tested content in the chapter. Protons have a relative mass of 1 and a relative charge of +1; neutrons have a relative mass of 1 and a relative charge of 0; electrons have a relative mass of approximately 1/1840 (ignored in most calculations) and a relative charge of -1. Protons and neutrons are tightly packed in the extremely tiny nucleus, while electrons occupy energy levels around it. Notably, nearly all of an atom's mass is concentrated in the nucleus (total mass of protons and neutrons), yet the nucleus occupies only about one-trillionth of the atom's total volume. Atoms are electrically neutral because the number of protons precisely equals the number of electrons. When the numbers differ, an ion is formed — a concept that recurs throughout ionisation energy and bonding topics.
Atomic Number, Mass Number & Isotopes
质量数(mass number, A)等于质子数加中子数(A = Z + N)。 例如,碳有三种天然同位素:¹²C(6质子+6中子)、¹³C(6质子+7中子)和¹⁴C(6质子+8中子)。
The atomic number (Z) equals the number of protons in the nucleus and defines both the element's position in the periodic table and its chemical identity. The mass number (A) equals the number of protons plus neutrons (A = Z + N). In nuclide notation, the mass number appears as a superscript top-left and the atomic number as a subscript bottom-left — for example, ¹²C₆ denotes a carbon-12 atom. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with identical proton numbers but different neutron numbers. For example, carbon has three naturally occurring isotopes: ¹²C (6p + 6n), ¹³C (6p + 7n), and ¹⁴C (6p + 8n). Despite having different neutron counts, isotopes exhibit nearly identical chemical properties because they share the same electron configuration — chemical reactions involve only electrons. However, physical properties such as density and diffusion rates may differ. The relative atomic mass (Ar) is the weighted average mass of the isotopes: Ar = Σ(abundance × isotopic mass) / Σ(abundance). For example, chlorine's Ar = (75% × 35 + 25% × 37) / 100 = 35.5. This simple calculation is a guaranteed exam question, especially common in Paper 1 multiple-choice.
Electron Configuration & Orbitals: Where Electrons Live
Electrons are arranged in atoms according to principal energy levels (n = 1, 2, 3, 4...) and sub-shells (s, p, d, f). Each principal level contains different sub-shell types: n=1 has only 1s; n=2 has 2s and 2p; n=3 has 3s, 3p, and 3d; n=4 has 4s, 4p, 4d, and 4f. Each sub-shell contains a specific number of orbitals — a region of space that can hold a maximum of 2 electrons with opposite spins: s has 1 orbital (max 2e⁻), p has 3 orbitals (max 6e⁻), d has 5 orbitals (max 10e⁻), and f has 7 orbitals (max 14e⁻). Electron filling follows three golden rules: (1) the Aufbau Principle — electrons occupy the lowest available energy orbitals first; (2) the Pauli Exclusion Principle — two electrons in the same orbital must have opposite spins; (3) Hund's Rule — in degenerate orbitals (orbitals of equal energy, such as the three p orbitals in the same sub-shell), electrons singly occupy with parallel spins before pairing up. Critical note: the 4s orbital is slightly lower in energy than 3d, so K(19) and Ca(20) fill 4s before 3d, but from Sc(21) onwards 3d is lower than 4s. Two famous exam "exceptions": Cr has the configuration [Ar] 3d⁵ 4s¹ (not 3d⁴ 4s², because a half-filled d⁵ is more stable), and Cu has [Ar] 3d¹⁰ 4s¹ (not 3d⁹ 4s², because a fully-filled d¹⁰ is more stable). AQA requires you to write electron configurations up to element 36 (Kr).
First Ionisation Energy & Periodic Trends
但有两个明显的"凹陷":Mg→Al(Al的3p电子能量高于Mg的3s电子,更容易移除)和P→S(S的3p⁴中有一个轨道被迫配对,电子-电子排斥使这个电子更容易移除)。
The first ionisation energy is the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions: X(g) → X⁺(g) + e⁻. This is an endothermic process (ΔH > 0), because energy is needed to overcome the nucleus's attraction for the outer electron. Three core factors determine ionisation energy: (1) nuclear charge — more protons exert stronger Coulombic attraction on outer electrons, increasing ionisation energy; (2) atomic radius — electrons farther from the nucleus experience weaker effective attraction, decreasing ionisation energy; (3) shielding — inner-shell electrons block part of the nuclear attraction, and more shielding lowers ionisation energy. Across a period (Na→Ar): nuclear charge increases steadily, atomic radius decreases, and shielding remains roughly constant, so first ionisation energy generally increases. However, two notable "dips" occur: Mg→Al (Al's 3p electron is at higher energy than Mg's 3s electron, making it easier to remove) and P→S (in S, one 3p orbital is forced to pair, introducing electron-electron repulsion that makes this electron easier to remove). Down a group (He→Ne→Ar→Kr): atomic radius increases significantly and more inner shells contribute to shielding, so first ionisation energy decreases. Large jumps in successive ionisation energies directly reveal electron shell structure — a jump signals the start of removing an inner-shell electron. For example, Na's successive ionisation energies show a huge jump from the 1st to 2nd (496 to 4562 kJ mol⁻¹), confirming that Na has only one valence electron.
(TOF) / Time of Flight (TOF) Mass Spectrometry
飞行时间 t = d/v(d为漂移管长度)。
TOF mass spectrometry is a high-frequency topic in both AQA Paper 1 and Paper 2, testing both principles and calculations. The process has four stages: (1) Ionisation — two methods: electron impact uses a high-energy electron beam to knock one electron off gaseous sample molecules, forming M⁺ ions (fragmentation may occur); electrospray ionisation dissolves the sample in a volatile solvent and sprays it through a high-voltage needle, where molecules gain a proton (H⁺) to form MH⁺ ions (usually no fragmentation). (2) Acceleration — positive ions are accelerated by an electric field so that all ions gain the same kinetic energy (KE = ½mv²). Since KE is equal, ions with smaller mass travel faster. (3) Flight — ions enter a field-free drift tube and travel at constant velocity. Flight time t = d/v (where d is the drift tube length). Combining with the KE equation gives t = d × √(m/2KE), i.e., t ∝ √m — lighter ions arrive first. (4) Detection — ions strike the detector, generating a current proportional to ion abundance. The result is a mass spectrum: the x-axis shows mass-to-charge ratio (m/z), where m/z ≈ m in electron impact (z=+1); the y-axis shows relative abundance. To calculate relative atomic mass from a mass spectrum: multiply each peak's m/z value by its relative abundance, sum all products, and divide by the total abundance. This calculation is almost guaranteed to appear in the exam.
Study Tips & Exam Strategy
然后找PMT(Physics & Maths Tutor)上AQA历年真题,反复练习质谱图算Ar的题型。5.
1. Master the basics: make flashcards for subatomic particle masses and charges — these are "gift marks" but easy to confuse under exam pressure. Burn into your memory: proton +1, neutron 0, electron -1. 2. Nail electron configurations: write the configuration of 5 random elements (1-36) every day, with special attention to Cr and Cu, the two "anomalous" cases that are AQA's favourite trap questions. 3. Conquer ionisation energy: learn to explain any trend using the three-factor framework (nuclear charge, radius, shielding) — this is the standard 6-mark question structure in Paper 1. Train yourself to instantly identify which electron shell the "big jump" corresponds to in successive ionisation energy graphs. 4. Master TOF calculations: derive t = d × √(m/2KE) by hand at least once to truly understand why smaller m/z means shorter flight time. Then work through AQA past paper questions from Physics & Maths Tutor, repeatedly practising Ar calculations from mass spectra. 5. Mock exam: complete the atomic-structure-related multiple-choice and short-answer questions from one AQA Paper 1 past paper under timed conditions to familiarise yourself with the question style and pacing. Spend 30-40 minutes a day for two weeks, and you will nail this chapter! With a solid foundation in atomic structure, the subsequent topics of bonding, energetics, and kinetics will flow much more smoothly.
