IGCSE CAIE 物理:运动学完全指南 / IGCSE CAIE Physics: The Complete Guide to Motion
Kinematics is one of the most fundamental and important chapters in IGCSE CAIE Physics. It studies how objects move — not why they move, but how they move. Whether you are preparing for Paper 2 (multiple choice) or Paper 4 (theory), a solid grasp of speed, acceleration, motion graphs, and equations of motion is essential for scoring top marks. This guide will take you from zero to mastery, systematically covering the core knowledge points of kinematics.
Scalars and Vectors
Before diving into kinematics, you must understand the difference between scalars and vectors. A scalar has only magnitude (size) and no direction. For example, speed is a scalar — it only tells you how fast an object moves. "5 m/s" is a complete description. Distance is also a scalar, representing the total length of the path traveled. A vector has both magnitude and direction. Velocity is a vector — you must say "5 m/s eastwards." Displacement is a vector, representing the straight-line distance from start to finish plus a direction. In IGCSE exams, confusing speed with velocity is a common way to lose marks. Remember: whenever you see the word "velocity," your answer must include a direction.
Speed and Velocity
The formula for speed is: v = d / t, where v is speed, d is distance, and t is time. The unit is metres per second (m/s). Calculating average speed requires special attention — it equals total distance divided by total time, not a simple average of segment speeds. For example, if a car travels the first half of a journey at 40 km/h and the second half at 60 km/h, the average speed is not 50 km/h, but 48 km/h. This is because the two segments take different amounts of time. The velocity formula is similar: v = s / t, where s is displacement. If an object moves in a straight line at constant speed, the magnitudes of speed and velocity are equal. However, in circular motion, the speed remains constant but the direction changes continuously — meaning the velocity is constantly changing, which means the object is accelerating! This is a classic exam trap.
Acceleration
Acceleration describes how quickly velocity changes. The formula is: a = (v - u) / t, where a is acceleration, v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, and t is time. The unit is m/s². Acceleration can be positive (speeding up) or negative (slowing down, also called deceleration). In IGCSE exams, negative acceleration and deceleration are related but not identical concepts — deceleration specifically means speed is decreasing, while negative acceleration may simply mean the direction is opposite to the chosen positive direction. For example, an object moves at 10 m/s westwards with an acceleration of 2 m/s² eastwards: if we define east as positive, then u = -10 m/s and a = +2 m/s². Calculating second by second, velocity goes from -10 → -8 → -6 → -4 → -2 → 0 — the speed is indeed decreasing, so this is deceleration. But if initial velocity is +2 m/s with a = -5 m/s², velocity goes from +2 → -3 → -8, with speed first decreasing to zero then increasing — the latter half is not deceleration, but acceleration in the opposite direction.
Motion Graphs
Motion graphs are the most important analytical tool in IGCSE Physics and are guaranteed to appear in Paper 4. Distance-time graph: the vertical axis is distance, the horizontal axis is time. A horizontal line means the object is stationary; a straight sloping line means constant speed (gradient = speed); a curved line means speed is changing — the tangent gradient gives instantaneous speed. From a distance-time graph, you cannot directly tell if an object is moving backwards; you can only see distance increasing or staying constant. Velocity-time graph: the vertical axis is velocity, the horizontal axis is time. A horizontal line means constant velocity; a straight line sloping upward means constant acceleration (gradient = acceleration); a straight line sloping downward means constant deceleration. The most important property of a velocity-time graph: the area between the graph line and the time axis equals displacement. If the line goes below the time axis, the area represents displacement in the opposite direction. Common exam questions require you to analyze both types of graphs — first draw a distance-time graph, then convert to a velocity-time graph, or vice versa.
Equations of Uniformly Accelerated Motion
方程一:v = u + at,用于在已知初速度 u、加速度 a 和时间 t 时求末速度 v。
When acceleration is constant (uniform acceleration), four core equations — also called the SUVAT equations — can be used. Equation 1: v = u + at, used to find final velocity v when initial velocity u, acceleration a, and time t are known. Equation 2: s = (u + v)t / 2, displacement equals average velocity multiplied by time. Equation 3: s = ut + (1/2)at², most commonly used when initial velocity and acceleration are known and displacement is needed. Equation 4: v² = u² + 2as, used when time t is unknown — this is particularly useful in free-fall problems. The key steps for using these equations: (1) Write down the five quantities s, u, v, a, t; (2) Identify the three known quantities from the question and mark the unknown one; (3) Choose the equation that contains the three knowns and the one unknown you need; (4) Substitute values, making sure units are consistent (typically all in SI units: m, s, m/s, m/s²); (5) Solve and check that your answer is reasonable.
Free Fall and Acceleration Due to Gravity
Near the Earth's surface, all objects fall with the same acceleration when air resistance is neglected — the acceleration due to gravity g ≈ 9.8 m/s² (CAIE exams typically use 10 m/s²). This means velocity increases by about 10 m/s every second. Galileo's famous Leaning Tower of Pisa thought experiment proved this: heavy and light objects hit the ground at the same time. In IGCSE exams, when dealing with objects thrown upward or falling, you must first define a positive direction. Typically, upward is taken as positive, so acceleration a = -g = -10 m/s². An object thrown vertically upward at 20 m/s: (1) Time to reach the highest point: v = u + at → 0 = 20 + (-10)t → t = 2 s; (2) Maximum height: v² = u² + 2as → 0 = 400 + 2(-10)s → s = 20 m; (3) Time to return to the starting point: total time = 4 s (ascent and descent are symmetric); (4) Velocity upon return: -20 m/s (same magnitude, downward direction). Note: at the highest point, v = 0 but a = -10 m/s² — acceleration is never zero.
Common Exam Pitfalls
(1) Confusing distance and displacement: an athlete runs one lap of a 400 m track — distance = 400 m, but displacement = 0 (back at the start). (2) Thinking acceleration is zero when velocity is zero: at the highest point of a vertical throw, v = 0 but a = -g. This is a high-frequency multiple choice question in Paper 2. (3) In velocity-time graphs, area gives displacement, but in distance-time graphs, gradient gives speed — do not confuse them. (4) Forgetting to check if acceleration is constant before using SUVAT equations. If the question says "acceleration increases uniformly from 2 m/s² to 4 m/s²," the equations do not apply. (5) Unit conversion: to convert km/h to m/s, divide by 3.6. So 60 km/h = 16.7 m/s. (6) In braking distance problems, final velocity v = 0, acceleration is negative, and you need initial velocity or braking distance — this uses v² = u² + 2as and appears in almost every exam.
Study Tips
Tip 1: Understand concepts before doing calculations. Many students rush into formula substitution without grasping the physical meaning. Spend time understanding why the area under a velocity-time graph equals displacement — this is far more valuable than memorizing the result, because it helps you tackle any variant question. Tip 2: Draw diagrams! Whether solving problems or revising, make it a habit to sketch diagrams and motion graphs. A good velocity-time graph often shows your reasoning more clearly than three lines of algebra. Tip 3: Deliberately practise unit conversions and significant figures. The CAIE mark scheme explicitly requires final answers to have a reasonable number of significant figures (usually 2-3). Tip 4: Work through past papers, especially Paper 4 kinematics synthesis questions. You will find that kinematics questions from different exam sessions follow highly similar structures — master one type and you have mastered them all. Tip 5: Use a scientific calculator (such as the fx-991CN X) to assist with calculations, especially squaring and square root operations in SUVAT equations.
