Energy is one of the most fundamental and central concepts in the IGCSE CAIE Physics syllabus. Whether it's motion, heat transfer, or electrical systems, energy transfers happen all around us, all the time. This article systematically covers five core topics: forms of energy stores, the law of conservation of energy, the relationship between work done and energy, calculations of kinetic and potential energy, and power and efficiency — helping you build a complete understanding of energy.
Eight Forms of Energy Stores
In IGCSE Physics, energy is not created or destroyed but rather "stored" in systems in different forms. The CAIE syllabus explicitly requires you to know eight energy stores: kinetic energy — the energy of a moving object, given by KE = 1/2 mv²; gravitational potential energy — energy due to an object's height, GPE = mgh; elastic potential energy — stored in stretched or compressed elastic objects like springs; thermal/internal energy — the sum of kinetic and potential energy of molecules within an object, where higher temperature means faster molecular motion; chemical energy — stored in chemical bonds, found in food, fuels, and batteries; magnetic energy — stored in the force fields between magnets; electrostatic energy — stored in the electric fields between charged particles; and nuclear energy — stored inside atomic nuclei, released during fission and fusion. The key distinction to master is "store" versus "transfer": a store is the energy state at a given moment, while a transfer is the process of energy moving from one store to another. A common exam pitfall is confusing thermal energy with temperature: temperature measures average molecular kinetic energy, while thermal energy is the total — an ice cube still has thermal energy despite its low temperature.
The Law of Conservation of Energy
在答题时,务必使用精确术语:"energy is transferred from... to..."而不是"energy disappears"或"energy is lost"。
The law of conservation of energy is one of the most fundamental principles in physics: energy can neither be created nor destroyed — it can only be transformed from one form to another, or transferred from one object to another, while the total energy of a closed system remains constant. In IGCSE exams, conservation of energy typically appears as "total input energy = total output energy", where output energy includes both useful energy output and wasted energy (dissipated as heat). For example, a light bulb converts electrical energy into light and heat: 100J of electrical energy in → 10J of useful light energy + 90J of thermal energy wasted — the total is still 100J. You must also master the four energy transfer mechanisms: mechanical working — transferring energy from one system to another through forces, such as pushing a box; heating by conduction — thermal energy transfer through molecular collisions in solids; heating by convection — thermal transfer through bulk movement of matter in liquids and gases; and heating by radiation — thermal energy transfer via electromagnetic waves (mainly infrared), requiring no medium. When answering exam questions, use precise language: "energy is transferred from... to..." — never say "energy disappears" or "energy is lost".
Work Done and Energy
In physics, "work done" is a rigorously defined term: work is done when a force acts on an object and the object moves in the direction of the force. The formula is W = F × d, where W is work (unit: joule, J), F is force (newtons, N), and d is displacement in the direction of the force (metres, m). This formula contains a critical condition: force and displacement must be parallel. If they are at an angle, W = F × d × cosθ applies, though IGCSE typically only tests parallel or perpendicular cases. When force and displacement are perpendicular (such as centripetal force in circular motion), no work is done. Understanding the work-energy relationship is vital: doing work on an object means transferring energy into it. For example, when you lift a book onto a shelf, you do mgh of work on the book, and the book gains mgh of gravitational potential energy. When you push a shopping cart and accelerate it, you do work on the cart, and it gains kinetic energy. One joule is defined as the work done when a force of one newton moves an object one metre in the direction of the force. In exams, be especially alert to the phrase "distance moved in the direction of the force" — if a student carries a schoolbag and walks 10 metres horizontally, the lifting force is upward but the displacement is horizontal, so NO work is done! This is a classic trap.
Kinetic Energy and Gravitational Potential Energy
Kinetic energy (KE) and gravitational potential energy (GPE) are the most frequently examined calculations in IGCSE Physics. Kinetic energy formula: KE = 1/2 × m × v², where m is mass (kg) and v is velocity (m/s). Note the squared relationship — if velocity doubles, kinetic energy quadruples, not doubles! This explains why high-speed collisions are far more destructive than low-speed ones. Gravitational potential energy formula: GPE = m × g × h, where m is mass (kg), g is gravitational field strength (approximately 9.8 m/s² on Earth, typically 10 m/s² in exams), and h is height (m). Ignoring air resistance, during free fall, GPE continuously converts to KE: at the highest point, GPE is maximum and KE is zero; during descent, GPE decreases while KE increases; at the lowest point, GPE is zero and KE is maximum. Using conservation of energy, you can directly calculate the landing velocity: mgh = 1/2 mv² → v = √(2gh). Notice that mass m cancels out — the final velocity of a freely falling object is independent of its mass. This is Galileo's famous conclusion! Exam questions also frequently feature combined scenarios like bungee jumping: during descent, GPE first converts to KE; once the cord tightens, KE and remaining GPE together convert to elastic potential energy.
Power and Efficiency
Power measures the rate of energy transfer, not the total amount. The formula is P = W/t = ΔE/t, where P is power (watts, W, which is J/s), W is work done, ΔE is energy change, and t is time (seconds). Note the distinction between power and energy: a high-power device can complete a large amount of energy transfer in a short time, while a low-power device takes longer. Real-world power values to remember: an LED bulb is about 10W, an electric kettle about 2000W, and a car engine about 100kW (100,000W). Efficiency measures the proportion of "useful output" in an energy transfer: Efficiency = (Useful energy output / Total energy input) × 100%, or equivalently using power: Efficiency = (Useful power output / Total power input) × 100%. Efficiency can never exceed 100% (because some energy is always dissipated as heat — a consequence of the Second Law of Thermodynamics). In IGCSE exams, efficiency can be expressed as a decimal (0.25) or percentage (25%) — both are accepted. A typical exam question: a motor receives 500J of electrical energy and lifts a 200N object by 2m — find the efficiency. Solution: useful work done = F × d = 200 × 2 = 400J, efficiency = 400/500 × 100% = 80%, meaning 20% of energy is wasted as heat. Reducing energy waste and improving efficiency is a central goal of engineering design — lubrication to reduce friction, streamlined shapes to reduce air resistance, and thermal insulation to reduce heat loss are all common approaches.
Study Tips
1. Memorise the eight energy stores and four energy transfer mechanisms thoroughly — these are high-frequency topics in CAIE Paper 2 multiple-choice questions. 2. Drawing energy transfer diagrams (Sankey diagrams) is a powerful problem-solving tool: use arrow widths to represent energy magnitudes for instant clarity. 3. Always include units (J or W) in all energy calculations — omitting units loses marks. 4. When solving "work done" questions, first check whether the force and displacement are parallel — if perpendicular, work done is zero. 5. Paper 4 six-mark questions often require you to explain a physical phenomenon using conservation of energy — memorise standard terminology (transferred, dissipated, conserved, wasted) — this is critical for scoring well.
