Nuclear physics is one of the most challenging yet fascinating topics in A-Level Physics. From Rutherford’s gold foil experiment to the identification of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, these concepts are not only high-frequency exam topics but also the key to understanding the most fundamental structure of matter. This bilingual guide will dive deep into the core concepts of nuclear physics, helping you build a comprehensive knowledge framework to tackle your A-Level exams with confidence.
一、卢瑟福散射实验:揭开原子核的秘密 | Rutherford Scattering: Unveiling the Nucleus
In 1911, Ernest Rutherford designed a groundbreaking experiment that revolutionised our understanding of atomic structure. He directed a beam of alpha particles (helium nuclei) at an extremely thin gold foil, with fluorescent screens placed around it to detect the scattered alpha particles. The choice of alpha particles was critical: alpha particles have a relatively large mass and +2e positive charge, meaning their electromagnetic interaction with the internal structure of the atom is strong enough to produce observable deflections. Additionally, alpha particles have a range of only a few centimetres in air, ensuring precise measurement of scattering signals.
The experimental results were astonishing. The vast majority of alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil as if it weren’t there — implying that the atom is mostly empty space. However, roughly 1 in every 8,000 alpha particles was deflected through a large angle, some even approaching 180°. Rutherford remarked: “It was almost as incredible as if you fired a 15-inch shell at a piece of tissue paper and it came back and hit you.” This phenomenon could only be explained by one model: all of the atom’s positive charge and almost all of its mass are concentrated in an extremely tiny core — the nucleus. By analysing the proportion and angular distribution of the rebounding particles, Rutherford estimated the nuclear diameter to be approximately 10⁻¹⁵ metres — merely one hundred-thousandth of the atomic diameter (~10⁻¹⁰ m).
二、三种电离辐射:性质、射程与穿透能力 | Three Types of Ionising Radiation: Properties, Range & Penetration
A-Level物理要求学生全面掌握α、β、γ三种辐射的本质区别。这三种辐射在本质、空气射程和穿透能力三个维度上截然不同,理解这些差异是解答相关题目的基础。
A-Level Physics requires students to master the essential differences between alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. These three types differ fundamentally across three dimensions: nature, range in air, and penetrating ability. Understanding these differences is the foundation for answering related exam questions.
Alpha Radiation: Essentially a helium nucleus (²⁴He²⁺), composed of two protons and two neutrons. Due to its large mass and high charge, alpha particles undergo intense ionisation with atoms along their path, rapidly losing energy. Consequently, alpha radiation has an extremely short range in air, typically only 2–10 centimetres. Its penetrating power is also the weakest — a sheet of 0.2 mm thick paper or the outer layer of human skin is sufficient to completely stop alpha particles. However, if an alpha-emitting source is ingested into the body, it can cause severe localised damage to internal organs.
β辐射 (Beta Radiation):本质上是高速电子(β⁻)或正电子(β⁺)。β粒子的质量远小于α粒子(约为α粒子的1/7300),电荷也仅为±1e,因此电离能力较弱,但穿透能力显著增强。β辐射在空气中的射程可达数米。要阻挡β辐射,约需3-5毫米厚的铝板。一个常见考点是:薄纸无法有效阻挡β粒子,这一点常被用来设计α与β的鉴别实验。
Beta Radiation: Essentially fast-moving electrons (β⁻) or positrons (β⁺). Beta particles have a mass far smaller than alpha particles (approximately 1/7300 of an alpha particle) and a charge of only ±1e, resulting in weaker ionisation but significantly greater penetrating power. Beta radiation has a range of up to several metres in air. To stop beta radiation, approximately 3–5 mm of aluminium is required. A common exam point: thin paper cannot effectively block beta particles, a fact often exploited to design experiments distinguishing alpha from beta.
γ辐射 (Gamma Radiation):本质上是高能电磁波,属于光子,不带电荷也没有静止质量。γ辐射的电离能力在三种辐射中最弱,但穿透能力极强。γ射线在空气中的射程理论上是无限远的(遵循平方反比定律衰减),它能够穿透数厘米厚的铅板或数米厚的混凝土。阻挡γ辐射通常需要厚铅板或高密度混凝土。
Gamma Radiation: Essentially high-energy electromagnetic waves, belonging to the photon family with no charge and no rest mass. Gamma radiation has the weakest ionising ability among the three types but the strongest penetrating power. Gamma rays theoretically have an infinite range in air (attenuating according to the inverse square law), capable of penetrating several centimetres of lead or several metres of concrete. Stopping gamma radiation typically requires thick lead sheets or high-density concrete.
三、吸收实验:科学地区分三种辐射 | Absorption Experiments: Scientifically Distinguishing the Three Radiations
在A-Level实验考题中,区分三种未知电离辐射的吸收实验是经典题型。实验设计利用了三种辐射穿透能力的根本差异。核心思路是逐步增加吸收材料的厚度,观察探测器读数的变化模式。
In A-Level experimental questions, absorption experiments to distinguish the three unknown ionising radiations are a classic question type. The experimental design exploits the fundamental differences in penetrating power among the three types. The core approach is to gradually increase the thickness of absorbing material and observe the pattern of change in the detector reading.
实验装置:将未知放射源放置在一端,另一端安装盖革-米勒计数器(GM管)来测量辐射计数率。在源与探测器之间,依次插入不同的吸收材料。首先,在两者之间放置一张薄纸(约0.2毫米厚)。如果计数率骤降至背景辐射水平,则说明放射源发射的是α辐射——因为α粒子无法穿透纸张。如果计数率仅轻微下降或基本不变,则排除纯α源的可能性。
Experimental Setup: Place the unknown radioactive source at one end and a Geiger-Müller counter (GM tube) at the other to measure the radiation count rate. Insert different absorbing materials between the source and detector sequentially. First, place a sheet of thin paper (approximately 0.2 mm thick) between them. If the count rate drops dramatically to background radiation level, the source emits alpha radiation — since alpha particles cannot penetrate paper. If the count rate drops only slightly or remains largely unchanged, a pure alpha source is ruled out.
Next, replace the paper with a 3–5 mm thick aluminium sheet. If the count rate drops significantly at this point (much more than with paper alone), this indicates the source contains beta radiation. This is because beta particles can penetrate paper but are significantly attenuated by aluminium. Finally, if neither paper nor aluminium can reduce the count rate to background level, but a thick lead sheet causes a marked decrease, gamma radiation is present. It is important to note that real radioactive sources may emit multiple types of radiation simultaneously, so combinatorial analysis is crucial — for example, first filtering alpha with paper, then attenuating beta with aluminium, with the remaining penetrating radiation attributable to gamma.
四、A-Level考试中的核物理计算与概念题 | Nuclear Physics Calculations & Concept Questions in A-Level Exams
A-Level核物理部分不仅考察定性理解,还涉及定量计算。考试中的高频题型包括:利用平方反比定律计算不同距离处的辐射强度、运用半衰期公式求解放射性衰变问题、以及基于结合能和质量亏损的核反应能量计算。
The A-Level nuclear physics section tests not only qualitative understanding but also quantitative calculations. High-frequency exam question types include: applying the inverse square law to calculate radiation intensity at different distances, using the half-life formula to solve radioactive decay problems, and performing nuclear reaction energy calculations based on binding energy and mass defect.
The inverse square law I ∝ 1/r² is a compulsory topic. When gamma rays radiate from a point source, their intensity decreases in inverse proportion to the square of the distance. Candidates must be proficient in applying the formula I₁r₁² = I₂r₂² and pay attention to subtracting background radiation. Half-life calculations involve the exponential decay formula N = N₀(1/2)^(t/T₁/₂) or N = N₀e^(-λt), where the decay constant λ = ln2/T₁/₂. These questions typically require calculating remaining nuclear counts, decay times, or deducing half-lives from experimental data.
