Electrochemistry is one of the most confusing topics in IGCSE CAIE Chemistry. Many students make repeated mistakes in exams for one reason: they haven't clarified the core differences between Galvanic Cells and Electrolytic Cells. Today, we'll use a comparative approach to master both concepts in one go.
Energy Conversion: Which Produces Electricity? Which Consumes It?
原电池(Galvanic/Voltaic Cell)将化学能自发转化为电能。
Galvanic (Voltaic) Cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy spontaneously. No external power supply is needed — the chemical reaction happens on its own, electrons flow from the negative electrode (anode) to the positive electrode (cathode), and a bulb lights up. Classic example: the Daniell Cell, with zinc in ZnSO₄ solution, copper in CuSO₄ solution, connected by a salt bridge.
Electrolytic Cells are the complete opposite — you must connect an external DC power supply to force a non-spontaneous reaction to occur. Electrical energy is converted into chemical energy. Classic examples: electrolysis of molten sodium chloride (NaCl) to produce sodium metal and chlorine gas, or electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen and oxygen.
📌 Key Distinction: Galvanic = Chemical → Electrical (spontaneous); Electrolytic = Electrical → Chemical (non-spontaneous). Mnemonic: "Galvanic gives, Electrolytic takes."
Electrode Polarity: Which Side is the Anode?
This is the most common mark-losing point in IGCSE. The definitions of Anode and Cathode are completely different in the two cell types:
Electrolytic |
|---|---|---|
Oxidation |
Reduction |
记住不变的原则:阳极永远发生氧化反应(Anode = Oxidation),阴极永远发生还原反应(Cathode = Reduction)。缩写口诀:AN OX, RED CAT。
Remember the unchanging rule: Anode is always where oxidation occurs, Cathode is always where reduction occurs. Acronym: AN OX, RED CAT. But the anode's "positive/negative" sign depends on the cell type — this is a CAIE examiner's favorite trick question.
Ion Flow and the Role of the Salt Bridge
In a galvanic cell, the salt bridge (usually filter paper soaked in KNO₃ or KCl) serves to maintain charge balance. As Zn²⁺ ions enter the solution from the zinc electrode, positive charge accumulates in the anode half-cell; anions (NO₃⁻) from the salt bridge migrate over to neutralize it. Meanwhile, Cu²⁺ is reduced at the cathode, depleting positive charge, and cations (K⁺) from the salt bridge replenish it. Without the salt bridge, the cell would quickly stop working.
In an electrolytic cell, there is no salt bridge — ions migrate directly through the molten electrolyte or solution: cations move to the cathode to be reduced, anions move to the anode to be oxidized. For aqueous electrolysis, you also need to compare the discharge priority of different ions (the discharge series).
Real-World Applications Compared
Galvanic cell applications: Everyday batteries (zinc-carbon, alkaline), lithium batteries, hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells. These are all around us in daily life — remote controls, mobile phones, electric vehicles.
Electrolytic cell applications: Electroplating (silver plating, chrome plating), metal extraction (electrolysis of bauxite for aluminium), electrorefining of copper, the chlor-alkali industry (electrolysis of NaCl solution to produce NaOH, Cl₂, H₂). These are the cornerstones of modern industry.
Study Tips
1️⃣ Draw a comparison table: Create your own galvanic vs electrolytic cell comparison chart (energy conversion, electrode polarity, ion flow, applications) and stick it on your desk for repeated review.
2️⃣ Practice CAIE past papers: Paper 4 (Theory) tests electrochemistry almost every year. Pay special attention to writing electrode half-equations, including the correct placement of electrons (e⁻). Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical) may involve building simple cells and measuring voltage.
3️⃣ Understand, don't memorize: Don't just memorize "the anode is positive in electrolytic cells" — understand why: because the positive terminal of the external power supply attracts anions, so the electrolytic cell's anode is positive. Once you grasp the principle, you'll never get the signs wrong again.
