Radioactivity is one of the most confusing topics in GCSE Edexcel Physics. What's the difference between alpha, beta, and gamma radiation? Which is more powerful — fission or fusion? What does a long vs short half-life really mean? Let's compare them all in one go.
Penetration: Alpha particles are the weakest — stopped by a sheet of paper or a few cm of air. Beta particles need a few mm of aluminium. Gamma rays are the strongest — requiring several cm of lead or thick concrete. This ranking is an exam favourite.
Ionising Power: The order reverses here — alpha has the highest ionising power (large mass, +2 charge), beta is moderate, gamma is the weakest. Remember: the more penetrating, the less ionising — it's an inverse relationship.
Nature: Alpha = helium nucleus (2p + 2n), beta = fast electron, gamma = electromagnetic wave. Edexcel often tests: in beta decay, a neutron in the nucleus turns into a proton + electron, so the atomic number increases by 1 while the mass number stays the same.
| Fission vs Fusion: Which Is the Future?
Fission: A large nucleus (e.g. uranium-235) splits into two smaller nuclei + 2-3 neutrons + energy. This is how all current nuclear power plants work. Pros: proven technology, controllable. Cons: produces radioactive waste.
Fusion: Two light nuclei (e.g. hydrogen isotopes) combine into a heavier nucleus + energy. This is how the Sun works. Pros: abundant fuel, minimal radioactive waste, enormous energy output. Cons: sustained, controllable commercial fusion doesn't exist yet.
| Half-Life: Short vs Long — What It Means
Short half-life: Decays quickly, highly radioactive but doesn't last. Ideal for medical tracers (e.g. iodine-131, half-life 8 days) — disappears soon after diagnosis, won't linger in the body.
Long half-life: Decays slowly, less radioactive but lasts ages. Perfect for americium-241 in smoke detectors (half-life 432 years) — no frequent replacement needed.
| How to Tackle Comparison Questions in Exams
Alpha radiation is more ionising, whereas gamma penetrates further."
Edexcel loves asking "explain why X is chosen over Y". Answer structure: ① State the difference ② Link to the specific scenario ③ Quote data (half-life values, penetration depth) ④ Use whereas / while to connect comparison sentences. For example: "Alpha is more ionising, whereas gamma penetrates further."
Study Tips
Draw a comparison table: make your own alpha-beta-gamma three-column table, review it daily, and you'll know it cold within a week. -
Chain your memory: don't memorise each concept in isolation. Link "penetration → application → protection method" into a single chain.
Past paper practice: Edexcel radioactivity questions have high repetition. Working through 5 past papers covers almost all tested points.
