Forces are one of the most fundamental concepts in GCSE AQA Physics. Invisible and intangible, yet omnipresent — from an apple falling to a rocket launching, from bridges bearing loads to magnets attracting — the principles of forces govern the entire physical world. This article takes a comparative approach to help you master the key force concepts.
Physical quantities fall into two categories: scalars have magnitude only, while vectors have both magnitude and direction. Speed is a scalar — 30 m/s is just 30 m/s. But velocity is a vector — 30 m/s east and 30 m/s west describe completely different states of motion. Force, displacement, acceleration, and momentum are all vectors. Get the direction wrong, and your entire calculation collapses.
Many students assume forces require contact — you push a table for it to move. Indeed, friction, tension, normal force, and air resistance are all contact forces. But non-contact forces also exist in nature: gravity pulls planets across space, electrostatic force makes hair stand near a balloon, and magnetic force attracts iron nails through the air. GCSE exams love asking you to distinguish between these two categories.
When the resultant force on an object is zero, forces are balanced. A stationary book — gravity pulls down, the table's normal force pushes up, resultant is zero, the book stays put. A car cruising at constant speed — driving force equals friction plus air resistance, resultant is again zero. Newton's First Law tells you: with zero resultant force, an object remains at rest or in uniform motion. Once the resultant is non-zero, acceleration kicks in, and F = ma takes the stage.
This is the classic GCSE trap. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms (kg), and it never changes no matter where you are. Weight is the gravitational force on that mass, W = mg, measured in newtons (N). You weigh 600 N on Earth, but only about 100 N on the Moon — your mass hasn't changed, but the gravitational field strength g drops from 9.8 to 1.6 N/kg.
Stretch a spring — within its elastic limit, it obeys Hooke's Law F = kx, with force proportional to extension. Release it, and the spring returns to its original shape: this is elastic deformation. But pull too hard past the elastic limit, and the spring permanently deforms — this is plastic deformation. GCSE required practical: the spring extension experiment — plot an F-x graph, find the slope of the linear region (spring constant k), and identify the limit of proportionality.
Study Tips
① Draw free body diagrams — for every mechanics question, the first step is to draw all forces as arrows with accurate direction and relative length. ② Remember F = ma is a vector equation — define your positive direction before plugging in numbers. ③ The spring practical is a guaranteed exam topic — understand the physical meaning of the linear, curved, and flat sections of the F-x graph. ④ Distinguish mass and weight — the moment you see "kg" and "N", be alert: these are two fundamentally different quantities.
