GCSE OCR

1. Plant Cells vs Animal Cells |

Both plant and animal cells are eukaryotic, but they possess several structural differences. Plant cells have a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole, and chloroplasts for photosynthesis. Animal cells lack these features but may contain smaller temporary vacuoles and have centrioles involved in cell division. Both share a cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, and ribosomes.

2. Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells |

Eukaryotic cells contain a true nucleus enclosed by a nuclear membrane and membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria. They are found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists. Prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, lack a nucleus, and their genetic material floats as a single circular chromosome in the cytoplasm. They are generally smaller and simpler, and may additionally possess small rings of DNA called plasmids.

3. Aerobic vs Anaerobic Respiration |

all equation is: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy). In contrast, anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen. In animal cells it produces lactic acid, whereas in yeast and some plants it produces ethanol and carbon dioxide. Both processes begin with glycolysis.

4. Photosynthesis vs Respiration |

Photosynthesis is an endothermic process that takes place in chloroplasts, using light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Respiration (aerobic) is exothermic, breaking down glucose to release energy in all living cells. The two processes are complementary: the products of photosynthesis become the reactants for respiration, and vice versa.

Photosynthesis: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Aerobic respiration: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ ATP)

5. DNA vs RNA | DNA 与 RNA 的对比

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a double-stranded helix that stores genetic information. RNA (ribonucleic acid) is typically single-stranded and plays key roles in protein synthesis (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA). DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose and the bases A, T, C, G. RNA contains ribose and replaces thymine (T) with uracil (U). DNA is located mainly in the nucleus; RNA is found in the nucleus and cytoplasm.

DNA(脱氧核糖核酸)是双螺旋结构的遗传信息储存分子。

6. Mitosis vs Meiosis |

Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid daughter cells for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction. Meiosis produces four genetically varied haploid gametes, essential for sexual reproduction. Mitosis involves one division; meiosis involves two successive divisions. Meiosis increases genetic variation through crossing over and independent assortment.

7. Dominant vs Recessive Alleles |

In genetics, alleles are different versions of the same gene. A dominant allele is expressed in the phenotype even if only one copy is present (heterozygous). A recessive allele is only expressed when two copies are present (homozygous recessive). For example, in pea plants, the allele for tall stems (T) is dominant over the allele for dwarf stems (t).

Example cross: Tt × Tt → genotypes TT, Tt, tT, tt → phenotype ratio 3 tall : 1 dwarf.

8. Xylem vs Phloem |

Xylem and phloem are the two types of vascular tissue in plants. Xylem transports water and dissolved mineral ions from the roots upwards to the rest of the plant. Its cells are dead, hollow tubes strengthened by lignin. Phloem transports sucrose and amino acids (products of photosynthesis) both upwards and downwards to growing and storage tissues. Phloem consists of living sieve-tube elements and companion cells.

9. Arteries vs Veins vs Capillaries |

The three main types of blood vessels have distinct structures adapted to their functions. Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; they have thick muscular and elastic walls. Veins return blood to the heart at lower pressure, containing valves to prevent backflow. Capillaries are extremely thin-walled (one cell thick) to allow efficient exchange of substances with tissues.

10. Type 1 vs Type 2 Diabetes | 1

Diabetes mellitus is a condition where blood glucose concentration cannot be properly controlled. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin; it typically develops in childhood and requires lifelong insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes is often linked to obesity and lifestyle; body cells become resistant to insulin, and the pancreas may still produce insulin, although sometimes in reduced amounts. It can often be managed by diet, exercise, and medication.
