Some nerves before an exam are normal and even useful. Trouble starts when the body stays switched on for weeks: broken sleep, stomach aches, and a student who begins avoiding the work that would actually help. This piece is written for parents and for anyone supporting a child through the exam season.
Nerves and anxiety are not the same thing, and the difference shows up in duration and reach. Ordinary nerves fade once the paper is open. Anxiety worth acting on lasts more than a fortnight and spills outside the exam hall. Parents tend to notice it first in three places: sleep that has shifted by an hour or more, headaches or stomach pain clustering on exam days while the doctor finds nothing wrong, and avoidance. That last one is the easiest to misread as laziness. Plenty of students would rather tidy a desk than open a past paper they are afraid of failing.
Telling a teenager to calm down rarely works, because nerves are run by the body rather than by opinion. Adrenaline speeds the heart and shortens the breath; cortisol releases fuel the muscles do not need right now. That system was built for short bursts of danger and it does not switch off on request. What helps is giving the body something concrete to do: lengthen the out-breath, slow the speech down, walk outside for two minutes of cold air. Blaming effort is the second common misreading. Under sustained stress, working memory suffers early, which explains why a student solves a problem at home and freezes on the same problem in the hall. AQA, Edexcel and OCR all keep candidate support pages on their official websites for exactly this situation.
Revision plans collapse when they are drawn as a six-week wall of tasks. Shrink the unit to an hour: forty minutes on a past paper, twenty minutes against the official mark scheme, then three lines on what to change. Write page numbers instead of vague labels. Control is what lowers anxiety, and control is built from finished blocks, not from a prettier timetable. Parents hold the frame: the same hour, the same desk, the phone in another room. Let the student write the plan and ask one question afterwards. Marking against the real mark scheme teaches more in twenty minutes than reading notes for two hours.
Sleep is usually the first thing to go, and short sleep makes anxiety louder. Teenage body clocks run late, so a bedtime that looks reasonable to an adult can feel impossible at fifteen. Start shifting it two weeks before the exams rather than three days before. Dim the screens for the last hour, and move caffeine to before two in the afternoon, soft drinks included. The mistake parents make most often is allowing a late-night catch-up session. Two stolen hours cost more in next-day recall than they add in revision. NHS sleep guidance puts a fixed wake-up time first: get up at the same hour whatever happened the night before, and the following evening comes easier. Weekend lie-ins of more than two hours push the clock back again.
Breathing is the most portable tool available. Make the out-breath longer than the in-breath: in for four, out for six to eight, ten rounds, roughly three minutes. The length of the exhale does the work, not the depth of the inhale. Progressive muscle relaxation fits the last half hour before sleep: tense one group for five seconds, release for ten, and work upwards from the feet. In the hall, two habits pay off. Before the paper is handed out, rest both hands on the desk and take three slow breaths, then read the questions through and start with the one you can do. If a question stalls you, write the formula or definition you know, because method marks usually survive a wrong final answer, while a blank page earns nothing.
The same sentence lands differently depending on its shape. How far along are you? is an evaluation, and a student under stress hears judgement rather than a question. Which block are you doing today? asks for a fact and hands back a little control. Slow the speech down and drop the rising tone at the end; in an anxious house a quick follow-up can sound like an accusation. Start by naming what you see before offering anything, because you do not seem to want to start today makes no immediate demand, while stop wasting time does. The mistake parents make is jumping to a solution half a minute into the conversation, after which the student stops talking altogether. Ten uninterrupted minutes a day beats an hour of advice.
There is a formal route for this inside the UK system. JCQ's Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments, in its 2025/26 version, states that supervised rest breaks are often more appropriate than 25 per cent extra time for candidates with anxiety or attention difficulties, since extra time simply extends the period a student must stay in a stressful room. The same document is clear that an application comes from the school's SENCo or exams officer, and that comments from parents cannot form its basis. Timing decides whether it works. Where a diagnosis exists, such as ADHD, ASD or a medical condition, the school should consider rest breaks before extra time, and the evidence comes from how the student normally performs in timed internal tests. Put the medical or educational psychologist report in front of the SENCo early, and check during mock season that the arrangement was actually used. AQA, Edexcel and OCR point to the same JCQ regulations from their official websites.
Some signs are not a family-only problem. Get outside help when symptoms last beyond a fortnight and start affecting attendance, when avoidance appears in the form of missed papers or a refusal to enter the hall, when sleep stays under six hours a night for weeks, or when there is any talk of self-harm. The school SENCo, the GP, and child and adolescent mental health services are the usual first calls, and the school pastoral team is often the fastest door to knock on. Parents need looking after as well, because anxiety travels through tone of voice, through sighs, and through repeated questions about whether revision is finished. Keep one daily slot when exams are off the agenda, take over the logistics in the final week, and hand the rest back.
