Clearing did not close when A level results came out on 13 August 2026; UCAS keeps the 2026 window open until 19 October. More than 30,000 courses still carried vacancies during the season, and UCAS says over 50,000 students find their place this way every year. Many applicants assume Clearing is only for people who missed their grades, yet it also covers students who met their offers and then decided they wanted a different course, city or start date.

UCAS lists the 2026 Clearing window as 2 July to 19 October, and any undergraduate application received after 18:00 on 30 June drops into Clearing automatically; vacancies appear in the UCAS search tool from 2 July. The final date to add a 2026 Clearing choice is 19 October, with the cycle closing on 23 October. Course numbers move fast in the fortnight after results day, when UCAS still listed more than 26,000 courses on 13 August 2026 against over 30,000 across the season.

UCAS lists four routes into Clearing: applying after 30 June, holding no offers you want to accept, missing the conditions of your offers, or using the 'decline my place' button on a firm choice. Extra runs separately from 26 February to 1 July for applicants who used all five choices without an offer, and those applicants move into Clearing once July starts. Advisers on the phone care about two things only; whether the course still has vacancies and whether your grades meet the entry requirements, so giving up a current offer before you dial is unnecessary.

Level 3 results were released on Thursday 13 August 2026, and JCQ rules keep A level grades out of candidates' hands before 08:00 UK time. According to the UCAS key dates for 2026, the Hub opens at 09:00, eligible applicants can add a Clearing choice from 10:00, and staffed support closes at 18:00; the SQA results day on 4 August followed the same timetable. After a verbal offer the provider gives you a deadline to add the course to your application, and missing that deadline cancels the offer. You can hold only one Clearing choice at a time; if the provider does not confirm it, you are free to add another, so a rejection does not end your options. Once a place is confirmed you cannot add further choices in the same cycle, and applicants who want to leave an unconditional firm place can use the 'decline my place' button that UCAS made available from 2 July 2026.

On results day, sort out your status first: confirm that you are in Clearing, write down the Clearing number and list five course codes you would genuinely accept. Ring in the afternoon rather than the morning for the first three days, log every reply and deadline, and add your first choice within the first week; if it is not confirmed, move on immediately. From weeks two to four the work shifts to offer conditions, accommodation, deposits and visa steps, remembering that the 2026 UCAS application closes on 24 September, the last day to add a Clearing choice is 19 October and the cycle ends on 23 October.
