Edexcel A-Level History is coded 9HI0, taught from September 2015 with first assessment in 2017, and three of its four components are essay based. Paper 1 lasts 2 hours 15 minutes for 60 marks and 30 per cent of the qualification, with two 20-mark essays in Sections A and B plus a compulsory interpretations question in Section C built on two contrasting extracts; Paper 2 is the short one at 1 hour 30 minutes, 40 marks and 20 per cent, where Section A asks how far two sources can be used to investigate a specific enquiry and Section B is the single 20-mark essay; Paper 3 returns to 2 hours 15 minutes, 60 marks and 30 per cent with one source question and two essays, the Section C option covering at least a century of change. Coursework (9HI0/04) carries 20 per cent and 40 marks, recommended at 3,000 to 4,000 words, and it weighs 5 per cent of the qualification in AO1 against 15 per cent in AO3. Pearson's own guidance sets the objective weightings at AO1 50 to 60 per cent, AO2 20 to 30 per cent and AO3 20 to 30 per cent, so knowledge, argument and judgement inside an essay remain the largest block of marks on the paper.
Examiners do not count points; the Pearson mark scheme places each 20-mark essay into one of five levels, with Level 5 reserved for A-Level answers showing a higher order of understanding. Four traits recur across every level descriptor: analysis and exploration of key features against the conceptual demand of the question, selection and deployment of knowledge, substantiated evaluation and judgement, and organisation and communication; an answer can be strong on one trait and weak on another, and the mark follows the overall profile. Length is not one of the traits, so a 200-word paragraph carrying a single factual example adds very little, and a judgement that appears only in the closing line reads as unsustained. The descriptors ask candidates to analyse and evaluate rather than describe, which is why trading narration for argument is the fastest route into the upper bands.
How far do you agree that、How accurate is it to say that、To what extent This essay argues that X was the most significant factor, although Y mattered more after 19XX,一句里有主张、有让步、有时间限定。判断需要有能被反驳的锐度,写 it was significant in many ways 这种句子,阅卷时等于交白卷。常见的错误是把题目里的词复述一遍当论点,题目问 most important cause,答案回一句 there were many important causes,这直接落进 Level 2。
Essays in Paper 1 and Paper 3 are phrased as judgement questions, and the wording itself asks you to choose a side: how far do you agree, how accurate is it to say, to what extent. The final sentence of the introduction is where that choice belongs, because every paragraph that follows is then tested against it; a workable line runs 'this essay argues that X was the most significant factor, although Y mattered more after 1945', carrying a claim, a concession and a time limit in one sentence. Hedged formulas such as 'it was significant in many ways' give the examiner nothing to weigh, and restating the question's vocabulary counts as agreement rather than argument. Scope matters as much as the claim, since the specification states that Paper 1 Section A questions normally cover at least a decade and Section B questions at least a third of the chronology, so a sharp judgement written over too narrow a period still misses the top band.
An essay's skeleton is a ranked list of factors rather than a timeline: each paragraph takes one factor, opens with a judgement about it, supports that judgement with evidence, and closes by weighing it against the factor already discussed. Comparative language such as 'more significant than' has to sit inside the paragraph, because one comparison in the conclusion arrives too late to register as sustained judgement. Many candidates order their material by familiarity instead of by explanatory power, which is why five minutes spent listing factors against the strength of their explanation is worth more than five extra minutes of writing. Chronology can still shape a paragraph about change over time, but the ranking logic has to stay visible from one paragraph to the next.
写 the government passed laws to help workers 只能停在中低档,写 the 1833 Factory Act sent four inspectors into the textile districts 才有资格往上走。
How specific the evidence is decides which level the knowledge trait reaches. A sentence saying that the government passed laws to help workers is broadly true and largely useless in an essay, whereas a sentence naming the 1833 Factory Act and its four inspectors locating the textile districts is doing exactly the work the mark scheme rewards; dates, acts and treaties, named people and institutions, and checkable figures are the four easiest kinds of detail to prepare. Paper 2 sharpens the point, because a 40-mark paper covers a short period and the descriptors ask for precise and relevant knowledge rather than general context. Repeating one piece of evidence across several paragraphs creates an impression of volume without adding range, so two or three genuinely distinct facts per factor are worth more than six versions of the same one.
Marks in an essay settle on second-order concepts: cause and consequence, change and continuity, similarity and difference, and significance, which the specification lists in Appendix 7 as objects of assessment; every question carries a word that points at one of them. A change question wants the scale and timing of the change, a continuity question wants what did not alter and why, and a significance question wants the criteria being used, such as how many people were affected, how long the effect lasted or how far an institution was reshaped, because vague criteria make every later comparison unverifiable. Long-term essays in Paper 3 Section C span at least a century, so a judgement has to account for a trend rather than export the conclusion of one decade across a hundred years. A three-line plan, one line for the judgement, one for the criterion and one for two decisive facts, exposes within minutes whether the concept has actually been thought through.
Paper 2 Section A、Paper 3 Section A
Paper 2 Section A, Paper 3 Section A and Paper 1 Section C are not essays, and answering them like one wastes marks that essay technique would otherwise earn. A source question is measured by utility: how far two sources together can be used to investigate the specific enquiry named in the question, which means content accuracy, completeness, authorship and purpose, historical context, and the point at which the two sources corroborate or contradict each other. An interpretations question asks why historians disagree, judged through the evidence they used, the concerns and period they belonged to, and the conceptual framework they applied, not through which reading is correct. Coursework places most of its weight on AO3, 15 per cent of the qualification, requiring three historians' interpretations to be compared before an overall judgement is reached, at a recommended 3,000 to 4,000 words, and an assignment more than ten per cent over 4,000 words is judged to have failed the concision requirement and cannot reach the top band.
A 20-mark essay is worth roughly 45 minutes of exam time, and since Paper 1 and Paper 3 each give 2 hours 15 minutes for three questions worth 60 marks in total, five minutes for a plan, about 35 minutes to write and five minutes to reread is a more reliable split than dividing the time equally between sections; the source and interpretations questions reward close reading rather than volume, so the spare minutes belong to the essay. The plan needs the argument line, one factor per paragraph and the decisive facts, and once writing begins the structure should stay fixed, because changing the argument halfway through is the most expensive mistake available. The final five minutes are best spent checking that every paragraph still opens with a judgement, that the question's key term has been answered explicitly, and that no date or period has drifted. Coursework runs on a different rhythm entirely: a 3,000 to 4,000 word enquiry improves through repeated reading and rewriting, so starting early matters more than writing fast.
