Edexcel
海岸这一章在 Edexcel A Level Geography(9GE0)里是 Area of study 1 的 Topic 2B: Coastal Landscapes and Change,与 2A 冰川地貌二选一,2016 年 9 月起施教,2018 年首次考试。
Coastal landscapes form Topic 2B of Area of study 1 in Edexcel A Level Geography (9GE0), chosen against 2A glaciated landscapes, taught from September 2016 with first examination in 2018; the topic is examined in Section B of Paper 1, where the coastal question alone carries 40 of the paper's 105 marks on a paper worth 30% of the qualification (Pearson specification 9GE0). Many students stop at vocabulary, recognising cliff, wave-cut platform, spit and bar, then meet a coastal profile in the resource booklet and cannot say what produced it; the topic asks instead for three judgements, where the energy comes from, where sediment and debris end up, and whether defending a coastline is worth its cost. Examiners separate the two habits quickly, because naming landforms collects description marks while tying process, rate and timescale into one causal chain collects explanation marks, and data-response questions supply the evidence whose translation into process language carries those 40 marks.
Wave energy depends on wind speed, fetch and duration, and fetch is the decisive variable, since the south-west coast of England faces thousands of kilometres of Atlantic and a force 8 wind there builds far larger waves than the same wind inside a small enclosed bay. Whether a wave builds or removes a beach is decided by two movements, because swash carries sediment up the beach while backwash returns it seaward; a long-wavelength swell of six to eight waves a minute loses backwash energy to infiltration and moves sediment onshore, widening and flattening the beach, whereas a storm wave of more than twelve a minute keeps a powerful backwash and strips sand offshore, narrowing and steepening it. Many students attribute the summer and winter difference to tidal range when the dominant control is wave regime, the June 2021 Paper 1 coastal question asked for exactly that seasonal explanation at six marks, and refraction concentrates energy on headlands so that under one rock type a headland retreats faster than the bay beside it.
Cliff form is set first by rock type and then refined by structure, since limestone and chalk resist erosion and allow steep faces to stand while clay and soft sandstone soften when wet, fail as slides and leave a concave profile that is steep at the top and gentle at the base. Bedding planes, joints and faults decide how quickly rock can be prised apart, because a densely jointed chalk cliff has a fracture every few metres where freeze-thaw and salt crystal growth repeatedly widen and break blocks away, whereas widely spaced fractures favour larger collapses; on a discordant coastline the resistant bed projects as a headland while the weaker bed is hollowed into a bay, and inside the headland a cave enlarges along a joint into an arch whose roof collapses into a stack that is later reduced to a stump. The wave-cut platform is the gently sloping surface left as the zone of weakness near water level is quarried away, widening at about the rate the cliff retreats, and treating it as a depositional feature is the error that costs marks.
Where depositional landforms sit is decided by how sediment travels; waves arriving at an angle push sediment up the beach in the direction of swash while gravity returns it down the steepest slope as backwash, and the two together produce longshore drift, moving material along the shore in one direction governed by dominant wind and wave approach. Where a river mouth or headland reduces energy, sediment is sorted and dropped on the sheltered side as a spit, and Spurn Point at the mouth of the Humber is the classic British case, its length depending on sediment supplied by the Holderness cliffs, so after upstream defences cut that supply the distal end has narrowed; a ridge linking an island or rock mass to the mainland is a bar, and once a bay is closed off the sheltered water behind it becomes a lagoon where fines settle before saltmarsh plants colonise, trapping mud with their roots and slowing flow with their stems. Dunes need vegetation to hold them, because trampled or cleared marram lets wind blow sand inland, and the eight-mark question in 2021 asked what vegetation does for coastal stability, where the credited points were root binding, reduced surface wind speed, and added organic matter with its effect on water retention.
Cliff retreat is a relay of three processes, since weathering weakens the rock mass, mass movement removes the weakened material, and wave action clears the debris from the base. Freeze-thaw works hardest where the temperature crosses zero repeatedly, because water freezing in a joint expands by about nine percent and widens fractures in chalk and limestone year on year, salt crystallisation is more common in the spray zone where crystals growing in pores prise the surface apart, and biological weathering covers root wedging and boring by molluscs, the latter obvious in soft rock. Mass movement splits by mechanism into rockfall from a steep face, a slide along bedding or a fault plane, and a rotational slump in saturated clay that often piles a bulge at the foot and briefly protects the base; the British Geological Survey's coastal landslide observatory at Aldbrough, established in 2001, measured losses of 1200 to 6300 cubic metres per 100 metres of cliff each year with major landslides roughly every six to seven years, and rainfall plus groundwater are the main triggers, which is why an average of 1.5 metres a year understates what a single event can do.
Sea level needs two separate changes before any UK example makes sense, because relative sea level moves in opposite directions around the country. Global change is set by the volume and temperature of ocean water, since melting ice adds water while warming expands it and the balance between those contributions has shifted in recent decades, whereas isostatic change is the vertical movement of the land itself: the Scandinavian ice sheet depressed the crust in the last glacial, and since deglaciation Scotland has been rebounding slowly, so relative sea level there rises very little or even falls, while south-east England is subsiding and combines that with global rise for a much faster relative increase. Direction decides the landform suite, with drowned valleys and fjords marking submergence and raised beaches with old cliff lines marking emergence; the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6, published 2021) puts likely global mean sea level rise by 2100, relative to 1995 to 2014, at 0.28 to 0.55 metres under the lowest emissions scenario (SSP1-1.9) and 0.63 to 1.01 metres under the highest (SSP5-8.5), notes that a low-likelihood high-impact rise approaching two metres cannot be ruled out, and hard defences that stop the sea also stop sediment and saltmarsh migrating inland, so coastal squeeze shrinks marsh fastest where rise is quickest.
Management marks sit on policy choice and its consequences rather than on what a sea wall looks like; English practice sets a shoreline management plan for each stretch, and official guidance lists four approaches, hold the line to maintain or upgrade protection in broadly the same position, advance the line to move defences significantly seawards, managed realignment to change the shoreline in a controlled way by slowing erosion or building new defences inland while giving up intertidal land, and no active intervention to allow a more natural coast while discussing adaptation to risk (gov.uk, Shoreline management plans). Choice rests on cost-benefit, so hold the line could not be justified for the Selsey peninsula after a 2008 breach caused more than five million pounds of damage on a frontage that needed hundreds of thousands a year in shingle repairs, and Medmerry was completed in 2013 for about 28 million pounds with some seven kilometres of new embankment. That scheme lifted protection for 348 properties, a sewage works and the main road into Selsey from roughly a one in one year standard to about one in a hundred, created 183 hectares of intertidal habitat and saved around 300,000 pounds a year in maintenance (Institution of Civil Engineers and government publications), while East Yorkshire runs the other way, because East Riding of Yorkshire Council recorded in written evidence to a parliamentary committee in 2021 average erosion of up to about four metres a year with isolated cliff losses above twenty metres, which is why defended towns and undefended villages now sit side by side and why the argument there is political as much as physical.
Section B
The 40 marks of Section B were split in the June 2021 coastal question into six marks on sea-level change producing different coastlines, six on seasonal differences in beach characteristics, eight on the role of vegetation in stabilising coastal landscapes, and a final twenty-mark evaluation of the view that coastal management policies rest mainly on economic judgements (Pearson 9GE0/01). The command word sets the shape of the answer, because Explain needs a complete process chain naming mechanisms while Evaluate needs evidence on both sides and a conclusion carrying conditions, so an answer that argues one position only stays in a low band; a reliable twenty-mark structure gives the criteria first, meaning cost and benefit, ecological impact, social fairness and timescale, then argues two or three cases against them, and closes by stating what would reverse the judgement, for instance where rising population or a faster rate of relative sea level rise could push hold the line back through a cost-benefit test. Resource booklet figures should be read for their pattern before they are explained, and fieldwork carries its own weight later, since Paper 3 is a two hour fifteen minute synoptic paper worth 70 marks and 20% of the qualification with the NEA taking another 20%, while the coastal data worth collecting are beach profiles, gravel size and roundness, and beach width either side of a groin.
