Edexcel
碳循环在 Edexcel A Level Geography(9GE0)里属于 Area of study 3 的 Topic 6: The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security,2016 年 9 月起施教,2018 年首次认证。它出现在 Paper 1 的 Section C,与 Topic 5 水循环合计 49 分,而 Paper 1 满分 105 分、占整个 A Level 的 30%(Pearson 官方 Assessment Guide for A level Geography Paper 1 and Paper 2,2018 年发布)。
The carbon cycle sits in Area of study 3 of Edexcel A Level Geography (9GE0) as Topic 6: The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security, taught from September 2016 with first certification in 2018; it is examined in Section C of Paper 1 alongside Topic 5 on water, and those two topics together carry 49 of the 105 marks on a paper worth 30% of the qualification (Pearson, Assessment Guide for A level Geography Paper 1 and Paper 2, 2018). Many students treat the topic as a list of numbers to memorise, quoting an atmosphere of about 870 PgC and an ocean of about 38000 PgC without being able to explain a single transfer. What the mark scheme rewards is three moves: locate where carbon is stored, explain how it moves between stores, and judge which flux human activity has altered. Answers that only recite figures collect the recall marks and lose the explanation marks.
The first mark on carbon stores is won by keeping quantity and unit apart; the specification measures stores in PgC, where 1 PgC is a billion tonnes of carbon, and fluxes in GtC per year, and mixing the two reads as imprecise to an examiner. Textbooks differ in the last digits but agree on magnitude: an atmosphere of roughly 800 to 880 PgC, vegetation near 550 PgC, soils and peat above 1500 PgC, around 38000 PgC of dissolved inorganic carbon in the ocean, some 4000 PgC in proven fossil fuel reserves, and tens of millions of PgC locked in sedimentary and carbonate rock. Many students read those figures and conclude that so large an ocean can absorb emissions indefinitely, yet a big store with a slow exchange is not a fast sink, since surface and deep water mix over centuries to millennia. A conversion exercise is worth one revision slot: 870 PgC is 870 billion tonnes of carbon, which against fossil emissions of about 10 GtC a year equals roughly 87 years of current output, and that order-of-magnitude check earns skills marks.
Fluxes are the layer where an answer has to name what goes in, what comes out and what the net balance is; terrestrial photosynthesis fixes roughly 120 GtC a year, plant respiration returns about half of that immediately, and net primary productivity lands between 55 and 60 GtC. Decomposition of litter and dead biomass releases a similar amount, so an undisturbed land ecosystem sits close to a net balance of zero, while the exchange between ocean and atmosphere is the largest single flux at around 90 GtC in each direction, which is why quoting 90 GtC as an ocean sink confuses a two-way exchange with a net uptake. Decomposition runs fast in warm tropical forest and slowly in cold conifer forest, where litter can stay locked into soil and peat for decades; confusing gross with net primary productivity is the mark-losing habit, because a question about net forest uptake needs the difference between net primary productivity and decomposition, plus a sentence on what a shrinking difference implies.
The slow carbon cycle sets how much carbon the planet holds over millions of years; silicate weathering consumes atmospheric carbon dioxide, the reaction CaSiO3 + 2CO2 + H2O -> Ca2+ + 2HCO3- + SiO2 feeds bicarbonate into rivers, marine organisms build that bicarbonate into calcium carbonate shells, and subduction returns the carbon to the atmosphere through volcanism. No single step of that loop looks fast, which is why the loop as a whole behaves as a long-term thermostat holding atmospheric carbon inside a narrow band. Students often cast volcanoes as pure sources and forget the return leg, and restoring that leg strengthens a six-mark causal chain. Burning fossil fuels is the short cut: carbon accumulated over hundreds of millions of years is released within centuries, bypassing the weathering and sedimentation gateways, a comparison Section C likes to set, so an answer should name the difference in timescale rather than assert that human impact is larger.
Two pumps carry emissions into the ocean; the solubility pump is physical, because carbon dioxide dissolves more readily in cold water, so cooling surface water at high latitudes sinks and takes carbon into the deep, with the North Atlantic and the Southern Ocean as the main downwelling zones. The biological pump is organic, as phytoplankton fix carbon at the surface and part of it sinks as particles that are either decomposed at depth or buried in sediment, and the two together make the ocean the largest active sink. The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6, published 2021) reports a fall of roughly 0.1 pH unit in surface waters since the industrial revolution; dissolving carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid and releases hydrogen ions, the resulting loss of carbonate ions weakens calcification, and corals and shell-building plankton face warming and changing chemistry at the same time. A common mistake is to write only that the ocean absorbs more, while dropping the falling uptake efficiency, the stronger stratification and the reduced nutrient upwelling, which are exactly the points an evaluation question wants.
The Global Carbon Budget 2024 (Global Carbon Project, released November 2024, published in ESSD 2025) sets out the 2023 accounts; fossil emissions reached 10.1 GtC, land use change added 1.0 GtC, total anthropogenic emissions came to about 11.1 GtC, the ocean took up 2.9 GtC, the land sink absorbed roughly 3.2 GtC, and about 45% stayed airborne, a fraction that data-response questions like to test. Those figures build a clean six-mark answer: a point about rising emissions, evidence in the form of a year and a value, and a knock-on effect running through a larger atmospheric store into stronger radiative forcing. Land use change needs unpacking, because clearing forest moves carbon straight from vegetation into the atmosphere, ploughing oxidises soil organic carbon, drained peatland releases faster still, and replacing forest with annual crops usually cuts the carbon held in that landscape. The weakest scripts jump from rising emissions to global warming in one step, skipping the change in the atmospheric store and the radiative forcing.
Feedback questions turn on direction and magnitude; permafrost soils are commonly cited as holding carbon on the order of 1500 PgC, and warming deepens the active layer so microbes decompose previously frozen organic matter into carbon dioxide and methane, which raises temperature further, a clear positive feedback. Falling albedo as snow and sea ice retreat, and an Amazon forest shifting from sink to source under drought and fire, belong to the same group; Lenton and colleagues, writing in PNAS in 2008, listed permafrost and the Amazon among climate tipping elements, and that vocabulary of tipping points is what the specification asks for rather than a linear projection. Negative feedbacks deserve space too, since higher carbon dioxide concentrations stimulate photosynthesis and faster weathering consumes more carbon dioxide, but neither response moves quickly enough to match emissions. Splitting the two directions and tagging each with a timescale keeps an answer inside the stronger band of the explanation marks.
Energy security is the second half of Topic 6 and exam questions often tie it to the carbon cycle; the specification expects the four dimensions of availability, affordability, accessibility and acceptability, so any national energy mix should be analysed through those four words. IEA statistics show fossil fuels still supplying around four fifths of global primary energy (IEA, 2024 data), which means an unchanged energy mix leaves the pattern of carbon fluxes unchanged. Carbon intensity is the usual comparison, since a coal-heavy grid emits far more per unit of electricity than one built on hydro, nuclear or wind, and shifting the generation mix lowers emissions while cutting exposure to imported fuel. Acceptability is the dimension students drop most often, covering local air quality, land take, water use and ecological damage, so naming one concrete siting dispute beats a vague claim about public opposition.
(Assessment Guide for A level Geography Paper 1 and Paper 2,2018)列出的命令词里,State 与 Identify 值 1 分,Outline 2 分,Describe 2 到 4 分,Explain 3 到 6 分,Analyse 6 到 9 分,Evaluate 与 Assess 6 到 12 分,分值越高越要求因果链条完整,同一个知识点在 Describe 题里写清过程就够,在 Assess 题里必须给出两方证据与一个带条件的判断。
Section C rewards an answer that translates stores, fluxes and timescales into the structure the command word demands; Pearson's own guidance (Assessment Guide for A level Geography Paper 1 and Paper 2, 2018) sets State and Identify at one mark, Outline at two, Describe at two to four, Explain at three to six, Analyse at six to nine, and Evaluate or Assess at six to twelve, so the higher the tariff the more complete the causal chain has to be. A six-mark answer runs three rounds of point, evidence and knock-on effect, each naming a specific store or flux instead of describing a symptom, and twenty-mark evaluations lose marks for arguing one side only or for a conclusion with no conditions attached. Topic 5 and Topic 6 share the 49 marks in Section C, and cross-topic questions reward linking the two cycles, for instance where soil moisture controls both photosynthesis and decomposition, which is often the point where candidates separate.
