📚 Core Exam Points for Atomic Structure |
Atomic structure is the foundation upon which all of chemistry is built. Every A-Level exam paper, whether AS or A2, rewards candidates who can confidently describe subatomic particles, write electron configurations, and interpret mass spectra. This revision guide condenses the essential examinable points into a clear, structured pathway.
1. Subatomic Particles |
Every atom is composed of three fundamental subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons carry a relative charge of +1 and a relative mass of 1. Neutrons are electrically neutral and have a relative mass of 1. Electrons carry a relative charge of −1 and have a negligible relative mass of approximately 1/1840, so their mass is usually ignored in calculations.
| Proton |
| Neutron |
| Electron | 电子 | −1 | 1/1840 (≈ 0.0005) |
Exam questions frequently ask you to state the location and charge of these particles. Remember: protons and neutrons are packed tightly in the nucleus, while electrons occupy the space around the nucleus in shells. The nucleus is therefore extremely dense and positively charged.
2. Atomic Number, Mass Number and Isotopes |
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. Because atoms are electrically neutral, Z also equals the number of electrons in a neutral atom. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons plus neutrons. The number of neutrons is therefore A − Z.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that contain the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. For example, chlorine-35 and chlorine-37 both have 17 protons, but they contain 18 and 20 neutrons respectively. Isotopes display identical chemical properties because chemical behaviour is governed by the electron configuration, which is the same for isotopes of the same element.
¹⁷₃₅Cl: 17 protons, 18 neutrons | ¹⁷₃₇Cl: 17 protons, 20 neutrons
A common source of marks lost in exams is writing the notation incorrectly. The mass number is written as a superscript before the element symbol, while the atomic number is written as a subscript, for example ¹²₆C. Practise writing this notation fluently before entering the exam room.
3. Relative Masses and the Carbon-12 Scale |
Chemists measure masses on a relative scale using carbon-12 as the standard. One atom of carbon-12 is assigned a mass of exactly 12 atomic mass units. Relative isotopic mass is the mass of one atom of an isotope relative to 1/12 of the mass of one atom of carbon-12. Relative atomic mass (Ar) is the weighted mean mass of all the naturally occurring isotopes of an element relative to 1/12 of the mass of one atom of carbon-12.
Because the masses of protons and neutrons are both approximately 1 on this scale, the relative atomic mass of an element is numerically close to its mass number, but not always exactly equal. This is because isotopes have different masses, and many elements exist as mixtures of isotopes with non-integer relative atomic masses. Chlorine, with Ar = 35.5, is the classic example you must be able to explain.
4. Electron Configurations: Shells, Subshells and Orbitals |
Electrons occupy energy levels, commonly called shells, which are numbered n = 1, 2, 3, 4 … outward from the nucleus. Each shell is divided into subshells labelled s, p, d and f. In turn, each subshell contains one or more orbitals, each of which can hold a maximum of two electrons. The maximum number of electrons in any shell is given by 2n², so the first shell holds 2, the second holds 8, the third holds 18 and the fourth holds 32.
You must be able to write electron configurations in both shell notation and subshell notation. For example, the electron configuration of sodium is 2, 8, 1 in shell notation, or 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s¹ in subshell notation. The 3p subshell fills after 3s, but note that the 4s subshell fills before the 3d subshell because 4s is lower in energy. This is a central exam point.
Exam tip: always write configurations in order of increasing principal quantum number for the final answer (e.g. 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d¹⁰ 4s² rather than ending with 3d¹⁰ 4s²). Many mark schemes require this convention.
5. Orbital Shapes and Electron Spin |
Each orbital has a characteristic shape. An s orbital is spherical, centred on the nucleus. A p orbital is dumbbell-shaped, consisting of two lobes extending along one axis. There are three p orbitals (pₓ, py and pz), oriented along the x, y and z axes respectively. The d orbitals have more complex four-lobed shapes, and there are five of them.
Each orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons, and these two electrons must have opposite spins. This is expressed by assigning spin quantum numbers of +½ and −½. When drawing orbital diagrams, you must represent the two electrons with opposite arrows (↑↓). A partially filled orbital is drawn with a single arrow (↑), representing an unpaired electron.
In A-Level questions, you may be asked to explain why an electron has a negative charge, why the atom is neutral overall, or to identify the number of unpaired electrons from a configuration. For example, nitrogen (1s² 2s² 2p³) has three unpaired electrons because each 2p orbital receives one electron before pairing begins.
6. Rules for Filling Orbitals |
Three rules govern the filling of orbitals. First, the Aufbau principle states that electrons occupy the lowest available energy orbitals first. Second, the Pauli exclusion principle states that no two electrons in the same atom can have the same set of all four quantum numbers, limiting each orbital to two electrons of opposite spin. Third, Hund's rule states that when filling degenerate orbitals of equal energy, electrons occupy them singly with parallel spins before pairing occurs.
1s → 2s → 2p → 3s → 3p → 4s → 3d → 4p → 5s → 4d
This filling order must be memorised precisely. A frequent exam question asks you to write the full electron configuration of elements from the first four periods, including transition metals. For example, titanium is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d² 4s²: note that the two 4s electrons are removed first when forming ions, so Ti²⁺ has configuration 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d².
A related point: chromium and copper are exceptions. Chromium is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d⁵ 4s¹, and copper is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 3d¹⁰ 4s¹, because a half-filled or fully filled d subshell is particularly stable. Mentioning these exceptions earns credit in every board's mark scheme.
7. First Ionization Energy |
First ionization energy is defined as the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions. The equation is:
X(g) → X⁺(g) + e⁻
Examiners award marks for three features of this definition: the gaseous state of both the atom and ion, the mole quantities (one mole of electrons), and the product being a 1+ ion. If you miss the word 'gaseous', you will lose marks, so write it every time.
First ionization energy is influenced by three factors: atomic radius, nuclear charge and electron shielding. A smaller atomic radius means the outer electrons are closer to the nucleus and held more strongly. A greater nuclear charge increases attraction. Electron shielding reduces the effective nuclear charge experienced by the outermost electrons because inner electrons repel outer electrons.
Ionization energy increases across a period from left to right, due to increasing nuclear charge and decreasing atomic radius without significant extra shielding. It decreases down a group, because atomic radius increases dramatically and shielding increases, so the outermost electron is less strongly attracted to the nucleus.
8. Successive Ionization Energies |
Successive ionization energies are the energies required to remove each successive electron from a gaseous atom or ion. Removing an electron from a positively charged ion requires more energy than from the neutral atom, because the remaining electrons are held more tightly by the increased positive charge. Therefore ionization energy increases steadily with each removal.
However, there are sudden large jumps in the values. These jumps occur when the next electron is removed from a new, inner shell that is significantly closer to the nucleus. By comparing successive ionization energies, you can deduce the number of electrons in each shell of an element.
For example, aluminium has 13 electrons arranged 2, 8, 3. Its successive ionization energies show a small regular increase from the first to the third value, then a huge jump between the third and fourth. This tells us that the first three electrons come from the outer (third) shell, while the fourth must be removed from the second shell, which is much deeper and more tightly bound.
Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ → Na²⁺(g) + e⁻ → …
This evidence for shell structure is often examined alongside ionisation energy trends in a 5–6 mark question. You should be prepared to sketch the graph of log₁₀ (ionization energy) against the number of electrons removed, and label the shell jumps clearly.
9. Mass Spectrometry |
A mass spectrometer is used to measure the masses of atoms and molecules. In modern instruments, a sample is vaporised, ionised to form positive ions, accelerated by an electric field, deflected by a magnetic field, and detected. The instrument measures the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of each ion, displayed on a mass spectrum.
The mass spectrum of an element shows lines at values corresponding to the relative isotopic masses, with heights proportional to the relative abundance of each isotope. For chlorine, peaks appear at m/z = 35 and m/z = 37 with heights in the ratio 3:1, reflecting the natural abundances of ⁷⁵Cl and ²⁵Cl isotopes.
For molecules, the molecular ion peak (the parent ion, M⁺) gives the relative molecular mass. The fragmentation peak with the highest m/z ratio known as the base peak is assigned an intensity of 100%. Exam questions may ask you to identify which peak corresponds to the molecular ion, or to use the M+2 peak to confirm the presence of chlorine or bromine atoms.
10. Calculating Relative Atomic Mass |
Relative atomic mass is calculated as a weighted mean. Multiply the relative isotopic mass of each isotope by its fractional abundance, then sum these products. The formula is:
Aᵣ = Σ (isotopic mass × fractional abundance)
For example, suppose a sample of boron consists of 20% ¹⁰B and 80% ¹¹B. The relative atomic mass is:
Aᵣ(B) = (10 × 0.20) + (11 × 0.80) = 2.0 + 8.8 = 10.8
For chlorine, with abundances 75% ³⁵Cl and 25% ³⁷Cl:
Aᵣ(Cl) = (35 × 0.75) + (37 × 0.25) = 26.25 + 9.25 = 35.5
Always check your answer against the periodic table. If the question gives abundances as percentages, convert them to fractions by dividing by 100. If masses are given in atomic mass units rather than as relative isotopic masses, the same weighted-average procedure applies.
Some questions present a mass spectrum instead of a table. In that case, read the m/z values from the horizontal axis and the abundances from the peak heights, then apply the same weighted-average formula. Practise this skill with past-paper spectra before the exam.
11. Common Exam Pitfalls |
Many students lose easy marks on atomic structure questions due to avoidable errors. The most frequent mistakes are: confusing atomic number with mass number; writing electron configurations in the wrong order; forgetting that 4s fills before 3d but empties first when ions form; omitting the word 'gaseous' in ionization energy definitions; and citing the wrong factors governing ionisation energy trends.
Memory aid — Protons define the element. Changing the number of protons changes the element; changing neutrons creates an isotope; changing electrons creates an ion.
Memory aid — 4s vs 3d. Fill 4s before 3d, but write 3d before 4s in the final configuration, and remove 4s electrons first when forming ions.
