📚 Energy Pyramid Model and Ecological Efficiency Analysis |
In any ecosystem, energy flows from one trophic level to the next, but the total amount of usable energy shrinks at every transfer. The energy pyramid model provides a powerful visual representation of this decline, while ecological efficiency calculations allow quantitative analysis of energy loss and transfer.
1. Trophic Levels and Energy Flow |
Trophic levels are the feeding positions in a food chain. The first trophic level (T₁) contains primary producers, the second (T₂) contains primary consumers, and higher levels (T₃, T₄…) contain secondary, tertiary and quaternary consumers.
Producers (T₁): Photosynthetic organisms such as green plants and algae that convert solar energy into chemical energy.
Consumers (T₂, T₃, T₄…): Heterotrophs that feed on other organisms to acquire organic molecules and energy.
Decomposers: Saprophytic organisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down dead organic matter; although not shown on the pyramid, they recycle nutrients and release heat energy.
2. Features of the Energy Pyramid Model |
An energy pyramid has a broad base representing the large amount of energy fixed by producers, with each successive level forming a smaller rectangle stacked above it. The width of each box is proportional to the energy stored in that trophic level per unit area per year.
Always upright: Energy is always lost between trophic levels, so the pyramid is inevitably narrower towards the top.
Units: The pyramid is measured as energy flow per unit time (kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹) rather than energy stored at a single moment.
High-energy base: Although producer biomass may be small in some aquatic systems, the energy fixed per year by producers is still far greater than the energy retained at any consumer level.
3. Why Is the Pyramid Shaped Like a Triangle? |
The narrowing shape is a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics. Each transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next is inefficient because a large proportion of energy is lost as heat, excretory waste, undigested material, and through metabolic maintenance.
Energy available to next level = Energy assimilated − Energy lost as heat and waste
Respiration is the dominant pathway of energy loss. Around 50–70% of assimilated energy may be used by organisms for maintenance, movement, transport and the synthesis of new tissue, resulting in a dramatic decline at every trophic step.
4. Ecological Efficiency: Definition and Importance |
Ecological efficiency describes the percentage of energy transferred from one trophic level to the next. It is not a single number but a framework that includes several component efficiencies such as consumption efficiency, assimilation efficiency and net production efficiency.
Understanding ecological efficiency allows biologists to predict biomass at higher trophic levels, manage food production, assess the impact of pollution, and design sustainable ecosystems such as aquaculture and agriculture systems.
Consumption efficiency measures the proportion of the energy available at one trophic level that is actually consumed by the next trophic level. It is calculated as:
CE = Energy ingested by consumers (I) ⁄ Energy available at previous level × 100%
CE = 消费者摄食的能量(I)⁄ 上一营养级的可用能量 × 100%
Typical range: Often 10–25% for grazing food chains; herbivores consume only a small fraction of the net primary production.
Low CE: Stem, roots, cellulose and secondary compounds are indigestible or inaccessible, limiting the proportion consumed.
High CE: In aquatic systems, primary consumers may consume a large proportion of phytoplankton because the cells are small, suspended and nutrient-rich.
Assimilation efficiency is the proportion of ingested energy that is absorbed across the gut wall and becomes available for metabolism and growth. Energy lost in faeces is not assimilated.
AE = Energy assimilated (A) ⁄ Energy ingested (I) × 100%
AE = 同化的能量(A)⁄ 摄入的能量(I) × 100%
Carnivores: Typically 60–90%, because animal tissues are chemically similar to the consumer’s own body and contain little fibre.
Herbivores: Typically 30–40%, because plant cell walls contain cellulose and lignin that cannot be efficiently digested by most animals.
Detritivores and decomposers: Their assimilation efficiency is often high relative to available energy because they digest dead material with external enzymes, but overall energy yield remains limited.
Net production efficiency is the proportion of assimilated energy that is converted into new biomass, either as growth or reproduction, while the rest is lost as heat through respiration.
NPE = Net production (P) ⁄ Energy assimilated (A) × 100%
NPE = 净生产量(P)⁄ 同化的能量(A) × 100%
Young organisms: High NPE because most assimilated energy is allocated to growth.
Adult organisms: Low NPE because maintenance and movement consume a greater share of assimilated energy.
Warm-blooded animals (homeotherms): Generally lower NPE than cold-blooded animals because thermoregulation requires substantial respiration.
8. Trophic-Level Efficiency and the 10% Rule |
The overall trophic-level efficiency (also called Lindeman’s efficiency) combines consumption, assimilation and net production efficiencies. It represents the percentage of energy at one trophic level that becomes net production at the next trophic level.
Trophic-level efficiency = CE × AE × NPE = Net production at Tₙ ⁄ Net production at Tₙ₋₁ × 100%
In many ecosystems, the average trophic-level efficiency is approximately 10%, which is why the “10% rule” is commonly quoted in biology courses. This rule states that only about 10% of the energy at one trophic level is transferred to the next, while ~90% is lost to respiration, excretion and indigestible waste.
9. Calculating Energy Transfer: A Worked Example |
Consider a pasture ecosystem with a net primary production of 15,000 kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹. Suppose the herbivore grazes with a consumption efficiency of 20%, assimilates 40% of the ingested energy and converts 20% of assimilated energy into new biomass.
Energy ingested by herbivore = 15,000 × 0.20 = 3,000 kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹
Energy assimilated = 3,000 × 0.40 = 1,200 kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹
Net production at T₂ = 1,200 × 0.20 = 240 kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹
Therefore, the overall trophic-level efficiency from producer to primary consumer is:
Trophic-level efficiency = (240 ⁄ 15,000) × 100% = 1.6%
This low value illustrates why most natural food chains are limited to fewer than five trophic levels.
10. Comparing Energy, Biomass and Numbers Pyramids |
Three types of ecological pyramids are commonly used. The energy pyramid is the most fundamental because energy flow is a universal measure that remains upright in all ecosystems.
| Energy pyramid
Energy flow per unit time (kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹) 单位时间能量流量(kJ·m⁻²·yr⁻¹) |
Always upright
| Biomass pyramid
Sometimes inverted (aquatic ecosystems)
| Numbers pyramid
Number of organisms per unit area
Sometimes inverted (tree → insects)
For example, a single oak tree supports thousands of insects, so the numbers pyramid is inverted, but the biomass pyramid remains upright and the energy pyramid is also upright. Therefore, the energy pyramid is considered the most reliable and representative model.
11. Exceptions and Limitations of the Energy Pyramid |
Although energy pyramids are always upright, some ecosystems present unusual features. In aquatic systems, producers such as phytoplankton reproduce rapidly and have short life cycles, supporting a large consumer biomass even when the standing producer biomass is temporarily small.
Decomposer energy: Official pyramids usually ignore decomposers, yet detrital pathways may carry more energy than grazing pathways in forest and deep-sea ecosystems.
Overlap of trophic levels: Many animals feed at multiple trophic levels, making it difficult to assign a single feeding position; omnivores such as humans blur the pyramid boundaries.
Time-scale dependence: Energy measurements must be averaged over a full year because seasonal pulses of primary production cause major fluctuations in energy availability.
12. Applications: Agriculture, Aquaculture and Conservation |
Ecological efficiency principles guide practical decision-making. In agriculture, farmers select crops with high nutritional yield and breeds with low feed-conversion ratios to maximise the fraction of energy incorporated into food products.
In aquaculture, feeding fish with high-quality protein improves assimilation efficiency, while reducing respiration loss is achieved by controlling water temperature and reducing stress. Conservation biologists also estimate how much habitat area is required to support top predators by applying the 10% rule to primary productivity data.
In a human context, diets based on lower trophic levels are more energy-efficient because they bypass the substantial losses of secondary production.
