📚 Computer Software Types and Interrupt Handling Mechanism |
Computer software forms the foundation of all computing activities, bridging the gap between hardware components and user requirements. This article explores the classification of computer software and explains how the interrupt handling mechanism enables processors to respond effectively to events from both hardware and software. These concepts are essential for CIE Computer Science candidates at both AS and A Level.
1. Classification of Software |
Software can be broadly divided into two categories: system software and application software. System software manages the internal operations of the computer system and provides a platform for application software to run. Application software, on the other hand, enables users to carry out specific tasks such as word processing, data analysis or graphic design.
The following table summarises the categories and typical examples:
2. System Software |
System software is a collection of programs designed to operate and control the hardware of a computer system. It acts as an interface between the hardware and the application software. The main components of system software are the operating system, utility programs, library programs and translators.
