📚 Excretion of Metabolic Waste Products in A-Level Biology | A-Level
Excretion is the process by which metabolic waste products are removed from the body. It is essential for maintaining homeostasis because many of these waste substances are toxic, acidic, or present in excess. In CIE A-Level Biology, you must understand the sites of excretion — the lungs, kidneys, liver, and skin — and the specific waste products each organ removes.
1. The Meaning of Excretion |
Excretion is the removal of waste products of metabolism from the body. These wastes arise from essential metabolic reactions such as cellular respiration, protein breakdown, and nucleic acid catabolism. They must be removed continuously because their accumulation would disrupt pH balance, osmotic balance, and enzyme function.
It is important to distinguish excretion from egestion. Egestion is the elimination of undigested food material (faeces) from the alimentary canal, which never entered the body's cells and was not produced by metabolism. Excretion, by contrast, involves substances that have been produced within cells as a result of biochemical reactions.
2. Major Metabolic Waste Products |
The principal metabolic wastes in mammals are carbon dioxide, nitrogenous compounds, and excess water. Carbon dioxide is produced by aerobic respiration in all living cells. Nitrogenous wastes — predominantly urea in mammals — arise from the deamination of excess amino acids and from nucleotide breakdown. Excess mineral ions and water enter the body in food and drink and must be removed to maintain osmotic balance.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) — produced by cell respiration; excreted via the lungs.
Urea (CH₄N₂O) — produced by the liver; excreted by the kidneys in urine.
Water and mineral ions — excess amounts excreted by kidneys in urine and by skin in sweat.
Bile pigments (e.g. bilirubin) — derived from haemoglobin breakdown; excreted in bile via the gut.
3. The Liver: Processing Nitrogenous Waste |
The liver is the organ responsible for the deamination of amino acids. When more protein is consumed than the body requires for growth and repair, the excess amino acids cannot be stored. The amino group (−NH₂) must be removed for the remaining carbon skeleton to be used in respiration or converted to fat.
Deamination occurs mainly in hepatocytes. The amino group is removed as ammonia (NH₃), which is highly toxic and must be converted immediately. The carbon skeleton (e.g. pyruvate, α-ketoglutarate) enters respiratory pathways or is used for gluconeogenesis. The process can be summarised as:
amino acid → carbon skeleton + NH₃
Ammonia is extremely soluble and toxic even at low concentrations. Therefore, the liver rapidly combines ammonia with carbon dioxide through the ornithine cycle to form urea, which is far less toxic and can be safely transported in the blood to the kidneys.
4. The Urea (Ornithine) Cycle |
In the liver, the ornithine cycle converts two molecules of ammonia and one molecule of carbon dioxide into one molecule of urea and water. This cycle involves a series of enzyme-catalysed reactions and consumes energy in the form of ATP. The net reaction of the urea cycle is:
2NH₃ + CO₂ → CO(NH₂)₂ + H₂O
2NH₃ + CO₂ → CO(NH₂)₂ + H₂O
Urea has a much lower toxicity than ammonia, which allows mammals to excrete nitrogenous waste in a concentrated form with relatively little water loss. In the kidneys, urea is filtered from the blood and excreted in urine. This is an excellent example of the liver and kidneys working together as part of the excretory system.
5. The Kidney: Structure and Nephrons |
The kidneys are the primary excretory organs for nitrogenous waste and excess water and salts. Each kidney contains about one million nephrons, which are the functional units. A nephron consists of the Bowman's capsule, proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule (DCT), and collecting duct.
Blood enters the glomerulus via the afferent arteriole, which is wider than the efferent arteriole. This creates a high hydrostatic pressure in the glomerulus, driving fluid and small solutes out of the blood through the filtration barrier into the Bowman's capsule. This process is called ultrafiltration.
The filtration barrier has three layers: the fenestrated capillary endothelium, the basement membrane, and the podocytes of the Bowman's capsule. Blood cells and large plasma proteins — typically those above approximately 69 kDa — are held back, whereas water, glucose, amino acids, urea, and mineral ions pass through freely.
6. Ultrafiltration and Selective Reabsorption |
Ultrafiltration produces about 180 dm³ of glomerular filtrate per day in a typical human. However, the body only produces 1–2 dm³ of urine daily. This means more than 99% of the filtrate is reabsorbed — a highly selective and energy-demanding process.
In the proximal convoluted tubule, all glucose and amino acids are reabsorbed by active transport, followed by the osmosis of water. Na⁺ ions are actively pumped out of the tubule cells into the blood, establishing a concentration gradient that drives co-transport of glucose and amino acids. The PCT also reabsorbs most of the bicarbonate, chloride, and urea (partially).
The loop of Henle establishes a medullary osmotic gradient that enables the collecting duct to reabsorb water under the influence of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The DCT regulates the reabsorption of ions such as Na⁺, Ca²⁺, and the secretion of H⁺ and K⁺, contributing to acid–base balance. Excess urea, water, and salts remain in the tubular fluid and pass into the pelvis as urine.
7. Excretion of Carbon Dioxide by the Lungs |
Carbon dioxide is the most abundant metabolic waste product by mass. It is produced in every living cell during aerobic respiration. Most CO₂ is transported in the blood in three forms: dissolved in plasma (about 5%), as carbaminohaemoglobin bound to haemoglobin (about 10%), and as hydrogencarbonate ions HCO₃⁻ (about 85%).
In red blood cells, the enzyme carbonic anhydrase catalyses the reaction between CO₂ and water to form carbonic acid, which dissociates into H⁺ and HCO₃⁻. At the alveoli, this process reverses: HCO₃⁻ combines with H⁺ to form CO₂, which diffuses into the alveolar air and is exhaled. This is an essential excretory pathway for a volatile waste gas.
8. The Skin as an Excretory Organ |
The skin contributes to excretion through the sweat glands. Sweat contains water, sodium chloride, urea (in small amounts), and lactic acid. Sweating is primarily a thermoregulatory mechanism, but it does remove some nitrogenous waste and mineral ions. The amount of urea lost in sweat is negligible compared with the kidneys, typically only 1–2% of total urea excretion.
Because sweat is hypotonic relative to blood plasma, significant water and salt can be lost during heavy sweating without losing excessive salt. Under the influence of aldosterone, the sweat glands can reabsorb sodium ions, reducing salt loss. Importantly, the skin should not be confused with the liver or kidneys — it is a minor excretory organ for nitrogenous waste but a major one for water and heat loss.
9. Other Excretory Products and Pathways |
Bile pigments, such as bilirubin and biliverdin, are breakdown products of haemoglobin from aged or damaged red blood cells. The liver excretes these pigments into bile, which passes into the small intestine. They are further converted to urobilinogen and stercobilin, which are eliminated in faeces. This is why faeces have their characteristic brown colour — a detail examiners often ask about.
In birds and reptiles, nitrogenous waste is excreted as uric acid, which is insoluble and allows water conservation. In fish and amphibian larvae, ammonia is excreted directly. Although these are not human pathways, CIE A-Level questions may require you to compare urea, uric acid, and ammonia in terms of toxicity and water loss — so keep this comparison in mind.
10. Summary Table and Examination Tips |

Common exam questions ask you to: (1) define excretion and distinguish it from egestion; (2) explain the removal of the amino group from excess amino acids; (3) describe ultrafiltration and selective reabsorption along the nephron; (4) explain how CO₂ is transported and released at the lungs; and (5) compare the relative importance of the different excretory organs. When answering, always name specific transport mechanisms — diffusion, active transport, osmosis — and refer to the enzymes and hormones involved (e.g. carbonic anhydrase, ADH, aldosterone).
Remember the three levels of nitrogenous waste: ammonia is cheap to make but highly toxic; urea costs ATP to produce but is moderately toxic; uric acid is very expensive to synthesise but nearly non-toxic and conserves water. Choosing urea allows mammals to balance energy cost against water conservation — a key evolutionary concept that impresses examiners when explained clearly.
