📚 A-Level Biology: Types of Blood Vessels and Their Structural Features | A-Level
Blood vessels form a closed network of tubes that carry blood away from the heart, exchange materials with tissues, and return blood to the heart. The three main types — arteries, capillaries and veins — are adapted to their distinct roles under high pressure, diffusive exchange and low pressure return.
1. Overview of the Circulatory Pathway |
In the systemic circulation, oxygenated blood leaves the left ventricle through the aorta, then travels through progressively smaller arteries and arterioles to reach capillary networks in organs. After exchange, blood collects in venules, then veins, and finally returns to the right atrium through the vena cavae.
In the pulmonary circulation, deoxygenated blood is pumped from the right ventricle to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries, while oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium through the pulmonary veins. The same vessel types are present in both loops, but their oxygen content differs.
2. The Blood Vessel Wall: Three Distinct Layers |
Most blood vessels, except capillaries, have walls composed of three concentric layers. The innermost layer is the tunica intima, which contains a thin sheet of endothelium cells lining the lumen. The middle layer, the tunica media, is made of smooth muscle and elastic fibres. The outer layer, the tunica adventitia, is connective tissue that anchors the vessel to surrounding structures.
The proportions of these layers differ between vessel types. Arteries have a thick tunica media to withstand high pressure; veins have a thinner media and a relatively thick adventitia; capillaries have only endothelium and a basement membrane.
3. Arteries: The Pressure Reservoir |
Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure. Their walls are strong and elastic, allowing them to stretch during ventricular systole and recoil during diastole. This elastic recoil maintains a continuous flow of blood even when the heart is relaxing.
Because arteries experience large pressure fluctuations, their tunica media contains many elastic fibres and some smooth muscle. This design prevents rupture and smooths out pulsatile pressure into a steadier flow.
Blood flows because pressure is higher at the arterial end and lower at the venous end.
4. Elastic Arteries and Muscular Arteries |
Large arteries close to the heart, such as the aorta and pulmonary artery, are elastic arteries. Their tunica media is dominated by parallel elastic lamellae with relatively little smooth muscle. These vessels can expand to accommodate the stroke volume and recoil to push blood forward.
Medium-sized arteries, such as the femoral or renal arteries, are muscular arteries. They have more smooth muscle and fewer elastic fibres in the tunica media. Their smooth muscle controls the amount of blood entering different organs through vasoconstriction and vasodilation.
5. Arterioles: Key Sites of Resistance |
Arterioles are the smallest branches of arteries, with a diameter typically below 300 µm. Their walls contain a relatively thick layer of circular smooth muscle compared with their lumen size. Contraction of this muscle narrows the lumen and greatly increases resistance to blood flow.
Because resistance is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the radius in narrow tubes, a small change in arteriolar diameter produces a large change in resistance. This makes arterioles the main controllers of arterial blood pressure and regional blood distribution.
6. Capillaries: Exchange Vessels |
Capillaries are microscopic vessels, usually 7–10 µm in diameter, just wide enough for a single red blood cell to pass. Their walls consist of only a single layer of endothelium cells and a basement membrane, creating a very short diffusion distance for oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose and waste products.
The velocity of blood flow in capillaries is slow because their combined cross-sectional area is huge. The slow flow provides more time for exchange with surrounding tissues. Capillaries lack elastic fibres and smooth muscle, so they cannot contract actively.
7. Types of Capillaries |
Continuous capillaries have endothelial cells joined by tight junctions, with small gaps that permit water and small solutes to pass but restrict larger molecules. They are found in muscle, skin and the lungs.
Fenestrated capillaries contain small pores or windows in the endothelial cells, allowing faster exchange of larger solutes. They occur in the renal glomeruli, small intestine and endocrine glands.
Sinusoidal capillaries have wider diameters and larger intercellular gaps, allowing even proteins and blood cells to pass. They are found in the liver, spleen and bone marrow, where substantial exchange with blood is required.
8. Capillary Networks and Tissue Perfusion |
A capillary bed consists of arterioles, metarterioles, true capillaries and venules. At the junction of each true capillary and the metarteriole, there is a ring of smooth muscle called a precapillary sphincter. This sphincter can contract or relax to control how many capillaries are open at any time.
When tissue activity increases, local factors such as a low pH, high carbon dioxide concentration or low oxygen concentration cause the precapillary sphincters to relax. More capillaries then open, increasing blood supply to the active tissue. This is an example of local chemical control of blood flow.
9. Veins: The Capacitance Vessels |
Veins transport blood back to the heart at low pressure, so their walls are thinner and less muscular than arteries. They have a larger lumen and a poorly developed elastic layer, which gives them high compliance. As a result, veins can stretch to hold extra blood and act as a reservoir.
About 60–70% of total blood volume is found in the venous system. This large capacitance is useful during haemorrhage because veins can constrict through sympathetic stimulation to push blood back into central circulation.
10. Venous Valves and the Skeletal Muscle Pump |
Venous pressure is very low, often only 10–15 mmHg, which is insufficient to push blood against gravity from the lower limbs back to the heart. To prevent backflow, many veins, especially in the legs, contain venous valves formed by folded endothelium with connective tissue support.
When skeletal muscles around a vein contract, they compress the vein and force blood toward the heart because the valves prevent backward flow. This mechanism is called the skeletal muscle pump. Rhythmic contraction of calf muscles during walking is an important aid to venous return.
11. Breathing and Venous Return |
During inspiration, the thoracic cavity expands and thoracic pressure falls, while abdominal pressure increases as the diaphragm descends. The pressure in the large thoracic veins becomes more negative, while blood in abdominal veins is pushed upward, so blood is drawn into the chest and toward the right atrium.
This alternating pressure change is known as the respiratory pump or thoracoabdominal pump. It is especially important during heavy exercise, when deeper and faster breathing enhances venous return and therefore cardiac output.
12. Comparing Blood Vessels |
The table below summarises the key structural and functional differences between arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins.

13. Clinical Relevance: Vascular Disease |
Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty plaques accumulate within the tunica intima of arteries, narrowing the lumen and reducing blood flow. The artery wall becomes less elastic and may trigger blood clotting, leading to heart attacks or strokes if blood supply is blocked.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is closely linked to arteriolar resistance. Chronic high resistance can damage the delicate endothelium and cause thickening of the vessel wall. Varicose veins occur when venous valves become incompetent, leading to pooling of blood and visible distended veins in the legs. Understanding vessel structure helps explain these conditions.
