1. Particles and Antiparticles |
Every particle has a corresponding antiparticle with the same mass but opposite charge. For example, the positron is the antiparticle of the electron. When a particle meets its antiparticle, they annihilate, converting all their rest mass into energy in the form of two gamma photons.
Key annihilation equation:
E = mc²
Pair production is the reverse process, where a high-energy photon near a nucleus converts its energy into a particle–antiparticle pair. This requires a minimum photon energy equal to the combined rest energy of the two particles.
The four fundamental forces and their exchange particles:
- Strong nuclear force – gluons (holds quarks together)
- Electromagnetic force – virtual photons
- Weak nuclear force – W⁺, W⁻ and Z⁰ bosons (responsible for β decay)
- Gravity – gravitons (not yet experimentally confirmed)
2. Quantum Phenomena: Photoelectric Effect |
The photoelectric effect is the emission of electrons from a metal surface when electromagnetic radiation of sufficient frequency is incident upon it. This effect provided crucial evidence for the particle nature of light.
Einstein's photoelectric equation is central to this topic:
hf = φ + Eₖ(max)
Where hf is the photon energy, φ is the work function (minimum energy to remove an electron), and Eₖ(max) is the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electron.
Key observations and their explanations:
- Electrons are emitted instantaneously – energy is delivered in discrete packets (photons)
- Increasing light intensity increases the number of emitted electrons but not their maximum kinetic energy
- Increasing frequency increases the maximum kinetic energy of emitted electrons
- Below a threshold frequency, no electrons are emitted regardless of intensity
hf, where electrons transition between discrete energy levels, absorbing or emitting photons of precisely determined frequency.
3. Wave Properties |
Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. The key parameters are wavelength λ, frequency f and wave speed v, related by:
v = fλ
tromagnetic spectrum spans from radio waves (long λ, low f) to gamma rays (short λ, high f).
Path difference and phase difference are essential for understanding interference:
- Path difference is the difference in distance travelled by two waves
- Constructive interference occurs when path difference = nλ (phase difference = 0, 2π, 4π…)
- tructive interference occurs when path difference = (n + ½)λ (phase difference = π, 3π, 5π…)
4. Progressive Waves and Standing Waves |
A progressive wave travels through a medium, transferring energy from one point to another. A transverse wave has oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer (e.g., light, waves on a string). A longitudinal wave has oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer (e.g., sound, seismic P-waves).
Standing waves are formed when two identical waves travel in opposite directions and superpose. Key features include nodes (points of zero displacement) and antinodes (points of maximum displacement).
For a string fixed at both ends, the fundamental frequency is given by:
f₁ = v / (2L)
p holds; for a closed pipe, only odd harmonics are present: fₙ = nv/(4L) where n = 1, 3, 5…
5. Refraction and Diffraction |
Refraction occurs when a wave changes speed as it passes from one medium to another, causing a change in direction. Snell's law governs this behaviour:
n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂
Where n is the refractive index and θ is the angle measured from the normal. When n₂ sin θ₂ would exceed 1, total internal reflection occurs — a critical concept for optical fibres.
The critical angle C is given by:
sin C = n₂ / n₁ (when n₁ > n₂)
t width. The diffraction grating equation is d sin θ = nλ, where d is the grating spacing.
6. Mechanics: Kinematics |
Kinematics describes motion without considering forces. The four SUVAT equations apply to uniform acceleration in a straight line:
= u + at s = ut + ½at² s = ½(u + v)t v² = u² + 2as
Always define a positive direction and stick to consistent sign conventions. Displacement is a vector (has direction), while distance is a scalar. Similarly, velocity is a vector, speed is a scalar.
When analysing projectile motion, treat horizontal and vertical components independently:
- Horizontal: constant velocity, aₓ = 0
- Vertical: constant acceleration due to gravity, aᵧ = g = 9.81 m s⁻² downwards
Graphical techniques are frequently tested: gradient of a displacement–time graph gives velocity, and the gradient of a velocity–time graph gives acceleration. The area under a velocity–time graph gives displacement.
7. Newton's Laws and Forces |
Newton's three laws form the foundation of classical mechanics:
- First Law: A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in uniform motion, unless acted upon by a resultant external force
- Second Law: F = ma (resultant force equals mass times acceleration)
- Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
he perpendicular contact force from a surface. Friction opposes relative motion between surfaces. Tension acts along a string or rope.
When drawing free-body diagrams, always resolve forces into perpendicular components using:
Fₓ = F cos θ Fᵧ = F sin θ
icular distance. For equilibrium: sum of clockwise moments = sum of anticlockwise moments.
8. Work, Energy and Power |
Work is done when a force moves an object through a distance. The equation is:
W = Fs cos θ
Where θ is the angle between the force and displacement. Energy is the capacity to do work and is measured in joules. The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.
Common energy forms tested:
- Kinetic energy: Eₖ = ½mv²
- Gravitational potential energy: Eₚ = mgh
- Elastic potential energy: Eₑ = ½ke² (where k is spring constant, e is extension)
Eₚ = mgh
Power is the rate of doing work or transferring energy:
P = W / t = Fv
Efficiency is the ratio of useful output energy to total input energy, usually expressed as a percentage. In PH01, you may be asked to calculate efficiency for simple machines or energy transfers.
9. Materials: Stress and Strain |
Materials under load experience stress and strain. Tensile stress is defined as force per unit cross-sectional area:
σ = F / A
Tensile strain is the fractional change in length:
ε = ΔL / L
Both quantities are related by Young's modulus:
E = σ / ε = FL / (AΔL)
Key graphs to interpret:
- Stress–strain graph: gradient gives Young's modulus; the area under the graph gives energy per unit volume
- Force–extension graph: gradient gives spring constant k; area under the graph gives work done
Ductile materials (e.g., copper) undergo plastic deformation before fracture. Brittle materials (e.g., glass) fracture with little or no plastic deformation. Polymeric materials exhibit rubber-like elasticity over a wide strain range.
10. Practical Skills and Uncertainty |
PH01 rewards candidates who demonstrate competence in experimental techniques. Key skills include: using vernier callipers and micrometres correctly, reading analogue scales to the appropriate precision, and recording data in well-structured tables with units.
When calculating uncertainties:
- For a single reading, the uncertainty is ± half the smallest division
- When adding or subtracting quantities, add absolute uncertainties
- When multiplying or dividing quantities, add percentage uncertainties
- Ruler readings typically have ±0.5 mm uncertainty (or ±0.5 of the smallest division)
Always use the correct number of significant figures consistent with the precision of the equipment. Plot graphs with appropriate scales, draw lines of best fit, and calculate gradients using large triangles on the line.
11. Exam Strategy and Common Mistakes |
Common errors that cost candidates marks in PH01 include: forgetting units, mixing up scalar and vector quantities, using an incorrect equation, and misreading graph axes.
Top exam strategies:
- Read each question carefully and identify what is being asked — state, calculate, explain or evaluate
- Show all working steps, as method marks are awarded even for incorrect final answers
- For 'state' questions, write a single precise sentence with the correct physics terminology
- For 'explain' questions, use cause-and-effect language: 'because', 'therefore', 'this results in'
- Check that your numerical answer has consistent units and a reasonable magnitude
- In multiple-choice questions, eliminate obviously wrong options first
Time management: allocate approximately 1 mark per minute plus 10 minutes for checking. If stuck on a question, move on and return to it later — dawdling wastes marks in other sections.
