1. States of Matter |

Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid and gas. The state of a substance depends on the balance between the forces holding its particles together and the kinetic energy of those particles. Heating or cooling changes this balance and causes changes of state.

Melting, freezing, boiling and condensing are all physical changes. For example, when ice melts at 0 °C, the particles gain energy and break free from their fixed positions, but the substance remains the same material — water.

2. The Particle Model |

The particle model is a simple way of explaining how materials behave. It assumes that all matter is made of tiny, moving particles. The model can explain observable phenomena such as diffusion, pressure and changes of state.

rate of diffusion ∝ temperature ↑, particle mass ↓

Remember that diffusion does not happen in solids, because their particles cannot move from place to place.

3. Atoms, Elements and Compounds |

An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction. An element contains only one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different types of atom that are chemically bonded together in fixed proportions.

SubstanceTypeAtoms present
O₂ElementOxygen only
CO₂CompoundCarbon + oxygen
NaClCompoundSodium + chlorine

4. Mixtures and Separation Techniques |

A mixture contains two or more substances that are not chemically joined. The substances in a mixture keep their own properties, and they can usually be separated by physical methods. Choosing the right technique depends on the properties of the substances involved.

MethodSeparatesKey idea
FiltrationInsoluble solid + liquidParticles too large to pass through filter paper
EvaporationDissolved solid + liquidLiquid turns to vapour and escapes
DistillationSolvent + dissolved solidSolvent is boiled off and condensed
ChromatographyDifferent dissolved dyesSubstances move at different speeds on paper

5. Physical and Chemical Changes |

A physical change is reversible and does not produce a new substance. A chemical change produces one or more new substances and is difficult to reverse. Being able to tell the difference is a key skill in chemistry.

The five classic signs that a chemical reaction may have occurred are: a gas is released, a colour change appears, a precipitate forms, heat or light is given out, or the change is difficult to reverse.

physical change: particles unchanged | chemical change: new substances formed

6. Acids and Alkalis |

An acid is a substance with a pH below 7, while an alkali is a soluble base with a pH above 7. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14 and tells us how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Indicators are dyes that change colour in acids and alkalis.

0 — 3 strong acid | 4 — 6 weak acid | 7 neutral | 8 — 10 weak alkali | 11 — 14 strong alkali

Pure water is neutral with a pH of exactly 7.

7. Neutralisation |

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base (or alkali) to form a salt and water. Since the acid provides H⁺ ions and the alkali provides OH⁻ ions, the reaction removes both and produces neutral water.

acid + base → salt + water

For example, hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to give sodium chloride and water.

hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide → sodium chloride + water

8. Metals and Non-metals |

Elements can be divided into metals and non-metals. On the periodic table, metals appear on the left and in the middle, while non-metals appear on the right. The dividing line is a zig-zag 'staircase' that separates the two groups.

PropertyMetalsNon-metals
AppearanceShinyDull
ConductionGood conductors of heat and electricityPoor conductors (except graphite)
MalleabilityMalleable and ductileBrittle when solid
State at room temperatureUsually solid (mercury is the exception)Solid, liquid or gas

Most metals also have high melting points and high densities. Non-metals such as sulfur and carbon are often dull and brittle. Oxygen, nitrogen and chlorine are gaseous non-metals at room temperature.

9. The Reactivity Series |

The reactivity series is a list of metals in order of how readily they react with water, dilute acid and oxygen. A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound. This rule is the basis of many extraction and competition reactions.

potassium > sodium > calcium > magnesium > aluminium > zinc > iron > copper > gold

iron + copper sulfate → iron sulfate + copper

The reactivity series also explains why metals such as gold are found uncombined in the Earth while reactive metals like aluminium must be extracted from their ores using electrolysis.

10. The Periodic Table |

The periodic table arranges all known elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same vertical column, called a group, have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of outer electrons. Horizontal rows are called periods.

Knowing the group number helps you predict how an element will behave. For example, all Group 1 metals form 1+ ions and all Group 7 non-metals form 1− ions.

11. The Earth and Atmosphere |

The Earth has a layered structure: the crust, the mantle and the core. The crust and the top of the mantle form the rigid lithosphere. The atmosphere surrounding the planet is a mixture of gases that has supported life for billions of years.

The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves continuously between the atmosphere, living organisms, oceans and rocks through processes such as photosynthesis, respiration and combustion.

12. Energy Changes in Reactions |

All chemical reactions involve energy changes. When bonds are broken, energy is taken in; when bonds are made, energy is released. The overall energy change of a reaction tells us whether it is exothermic or endothermic.
