📚 The Structure of the Atom and The Periodic Table | 原子结构与元素周期表
Atoms are the fundamental building blocks of all matter. To understand chemistry, you must first understand how atoms are structured and how the periodic table organises them into patterns. This article will guide you through the essential ideas that appear frequently in Edexcel IGCSE Science exams.
原子是所有物质的基本构成单位。要理解化学,你首先必须理解原子是如何构成的,以及元素周期表是如何将它们按规律组织起来的。本文将为你梳理 Edexcel IGCSE 科学考试中经常出现的核心概念。
1. Subatomic Particles | 亚原子粒子
An atom consists of three types of subatomic particles. Protons and neutrons are located in the tiny central nucleus, while electrons move around the nucleus in energy levels (shells). Electrons have a negative charge and a negligible mass, so most of the atom’s mass comes from the protons and neutrons.
原子由三种亚原子粒子组成。质子和中子位于极小的原子核中心,而电子则在核外的能级(电子层)中运动。电子带负电且质量极小,因此原子的绝大部分质量来自质子和中子。
The key properties of these particles are summarised in the table below:
这些粒子的关键性质如下表所示:
| Particle / 粒子 | Relative Mass / 相对质量 | Relative Charge / 相对电荷 |
| Proton / 质子 | 1 | +1 |
| Neutron / 中子 | 1 | 0 |
| Electron / 电子 | 1/1840 (approx. 0) | -1 |
2. Atomic Number and Mass Number | 原子序数与质量数
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in an atom. In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
原子序数(Z)是原子中的质子数。在中性原子中,电子数等于质子数。质量数(A)是原子核中质子数与中子数的总和。
Number of neutrons = Mass number – Atomic number
中子数 = 质量数 – 原子序数
ic number 11 and mass number 23. It contains 11 protons, 11 electrons, and 12 neutrons (23 – 11 = 12).
例如,钠原子的原子序数为 11,质量数为 23。它含有 11 个质子、11 个电子和 12 个中子(23 – 11 = 12)。
3. Isotopes | 同位素
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. This means they have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.
同位素是同一元素的不同原子,它们具有相同的质子数但中子数不同。这意味着它们具有相同的原子序数但不同的质量数。
For example, the three isotopes of hydrogen are:
例如,氢的三种同位素是:
'Hydrogen-1: 1 proton, 0 neutron'
氢-1:1 个质子,0 个中子
'Hydrogen-2 (deuterium): 1 proton, 1 neutron'
氢-2(氘):1 个质子,1 个中子
'Hydrogen-3 (tritium): 1 proton, 2 neutrons'
氢-3(氚):1 个质子,2 个中子
Isotopes of the same element have the same chemical properties because they have the same electronic configuration, but their physical properties may differ slightly.
同一元素的同位素具有相同的化学性质,因为它们具有相同的电子排布,但物理性质可能略有差异。
4. Electronic Configuration | 电子排布
Electrons occupy energy levels, also called shells, around the nucleus. The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, and the second and third shells can each hold up to 8 electrons.
电子占据原子核周围的能级,也称为电子层。第一层最多容纳 2 个电子,第二层和第三层最多各容纳 8 个电子。
For example, the electronic configuration of oxygen (atomic number 8) is written as 2,6. This tells us that oxygen has 2 electrons in the first shell and 6 electrons in the second shell.
例如,氧(原子序数 8)的电子排布写作 2,6。这表示氧的第一层有 2 个电子,第二层有 6 个电子。
Na (Z=11): 2,8,1 | Cl (Z=17): 2,8,7
钠(Z=11):2,8,1 | 氯(Z=17):2,8,7
The number of electrons in the outer shell is especially important because it determines how an element reacts chemically.
最外层电子数尤其重要,因为它决定了元素的化学反应方式。
5. Arrangement of the Periodic Table | 元素周期表的排列
The periodic table arranges elements in increasing order of atomic number. Each horizontal row is called a period, and each vertical column is called a group.
元素周期表按原子序数递增的顺序排列元素。每一横向行称为一个周期,每一纵向列称为一个族。
Elements in the same group have the same number of outer-shell electrons and therefore similar chemical properties. Across a period, the number of electrons in the outer shell increases by one each time.
同一族的元素具有相同的最外层电子数,因此化学性质相似。在同一周期中,最外层电子数每次增加一个。
Group number = Number of outer-shell electrons (for Groups 1 and 2)
族号 = 最外层电子数(对于第 1 族和第 2 族)
For example, all elements in Group 1 have 1 outer electron and are highly reactive metals.
例如,第 1 族的所有元素都有 1 个最外层电子,且为高反应活性金属。
6. Group Trends: Metals and Non-metals | 族性质趋势:金属与非金属
The periodic table separates metals (on the left and centre) from non-metals (on the right). Metals typically form positive ions, are shiny, conduct electricity, and are malleable. Non-metals usually gain electrons to form negative ions, and are poor conductors.
元素周期表将金属(左侧和中部)与非金属(右侧)分开。金属通常形成正离子,具有金属光泽、能导电且具有延展性。非金属通常获得电子形成负离子,是不良导体。
Within Group 1 (alkali metals), reactivity increases down the group. As atoms get larger, the outer electron is further from the nucleus and is more easily lost.
在第 1 族(碱金属)中,反应活性向下递增。随着原子变大,外层电子距离原子核更远,更容易失去。
Within Group 7 (halogens), reactivity decreases down the group. Atoms become larger and the incoming electron is less attracted to the nucleus.
在第 7 族(卤素)中,反应活性向下递减。原子变大,新进入的电子受到的核吸引力减弱。
7. Ions and Ionic Bonding | 离子与离子键
An ion is a charged particle formed when an atom loses or gains electrons. Metals lose electrons to form positive ions (cations), while non-metals gain electrons to form negative ions (anions).
离子是原子失去或获得电子后形成的带电粒子。金属失去电子形成正离子(阳离子),非金属获得电子形成负离子(阴离子)。
Ionic bonding involves the electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions. For example, sodium (2,8,1) loses one electron to become Na⁺, while chlorine (2,8,7) gains one electron to become Cl⁻.
离子键涉及异种电荷离子之间的静电吸引力。例如,钠(2,8,1)失去一个电子变成 Na⁺,氯(2,8,7)获得一个电子变成 Cl⁻。
Na → Na⁺ + e⁻ | Cl + e⁻ → Cl⁻
Na → Na⁺ + e⁻ | Cl + e⁻ → Cl⁻
The resulting compound, sodium chloride, is held together by strong ionic bonds and forms a giant ionic lattice.
生成的化合物氯化钠通过强离子键结合在一起,形成巨大的离子晶格。
8. Covalent Bonding | 共价键
A covalent bond is formed when two non-metal atoms share a pair of electrons. Each shared pair counts as one full outer shell for both atoms.
当两个非金属原子共享一对电子时,就形成共价键。每一对共享电子都算作两个原子各自完整的最外层电子。
For example, a hydrogen molecule (H₂) has each hydrogen atom sharing one electron with the other. This can be represented as H–H. Similarly, a water molecule (H₂O) has two O–H single bonds.
例如,氢分子(H₂)中每个氢原子与另一个氢原子共享一个电子。这可以表示为 H–H。类似地,水分子(H₂O)具有两个 O–H 单键。
N₂: N ≡ N, where a triple bond means six shared electrons.
N₂:N ≡ N,三重键表示共享六个电子。
Covalent molecules usually have simple structures with low melting and boiling points, because only weak intermolecular forces need to be overcome when they melt or boil.
共价分子通常具有简单结构,熔点和沸点较低,因为熔化或沸腾时只需要克服微弱的分子间作用力。
