📚 Clarifying Confusing Concepts in IGCSE OCR Chemistry | IGCSE OCR

In IGCSE OCR Chemistry, students often find themselves mixing up concepts that sound similar but have very different meanings. Without clear distinctions, it is , it's easy to lose marks on exams. This guide takes the most commonly confused pairs - from atoms versus ions to isotopes versus allotropes - and explains them side by side with straightforward examples, comparison tables and exam-style phrasing. By the end, you will be able to confidently identify, define and apply each concept correctly, and you will know exactly which word in a question is telling you which idea to use.

1. Atoms vs. Ions |

An atom is the smallest neutral particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction. It consists of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. The number of protons equals the number of electrons, so the overall charge is zero. The proton number (atomic number) is what identifies the element.

An ion is a charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses one or more electrons. If an atom loses electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion called a cation (e.g. Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺). If it gains electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion called an anion (e.g. Cl⁻, O²⁻, Br⁻).

Work through two standard examples. A neutral sodium atom (Na) has 11 protons and 11 electrons, arranged 2,8,1. When it loses its single outermost electron, it forms Na⁺, which still has 11 protons but only 10 electrons, giving a 1+ charge and the stable arrangement 2,8. A chlorine atom (Cl) has 17 protons and 17 electrons, arranged 2,8,7; when it gains one electron it becomes the chloride ion Cl⁻, with 17 protons and 18 electrons, a 1− charge and the arrangement 2,8,8. In both cases the nucleus is untouched - only electrons are transferred, which is why chemical reactions never change one element into another.

1 = 10 electrons, and O²⁻ has 8 + 2 = 10 electrons. A useful check is that many simple ions achieve the electron arrangement of a noble gas.

2. Elements, Compounds and Mixtures |

An element contains only one type of atom and cannot be split into simpler substances by chemical means (e.g. Fe, O₂, He). A compound contains two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio, and its properties are different from those of the elements that made it (e.g. H₂O, CO₂, NaCl). A mixture contains two or more substances that are not chemically combined, so the composition can vary and the components keep their own properties (e.g. air, seawater, brass).

Physical methods: filtration, distillation, chromatography

The key exam sentence is this: a mixture can be separated by physical means, while a compound can only be broken down by chemical means. If a question mentions fractional distillation, filtration or chromatography, it is almost certainly about a mixture.

3. Isotopes vs. Allotropes |

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. They therefore have the same proton number but different mass (nucleon) numbers. Examples include carbon-12, carbon-13 and carbon-14, the two chlorine isotopes ³⁵Cl and ³⁷Cl, and hydrogen-1, hydrogen-2 and hydrogen-3.

Allotropes are different structural forms of the same element in the same physical state. Examples include diamond, graphite, graphene and C₆₀ (fullerene) for carbon, and oxygen O₂ and ozone O₃. The atoms are identical, but the way they are arranged and bonded is different, which produces very different physical properties such as hardness, conductivity and density.

The simplest way to separate them: isotopes differ inside the nucleus (neutron number), while allotropes differ outside the nucleus (atomic arrangement). Isotopes of an element have essentially the same chemical properties because chemical behaviour depends on electrons, not neutrons. Allotropes, by contrast, can have completely different chemical and physical behaviour - graphite conducts electricity and is soft, diamond does not conduct and is the hardest natural substance.

4. Mass Number, Relative Atomic Mass and Relative Molecular Mass |

The mass number (nucleon number) of one particular atom is an integer: it is the number of protons plus the number of neutrons in that atom. The relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) of an element is different - it is the average mass of its naturally occurring isotopes, weighted according to their abundances, compared with 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.

Chlorine is the classic calculation. Naturally occurring chlorine is about 75% ³⁵Cl and 25% ³⁷Cl, so:

Aᵣ(Cl) = (35 × 75 + 37 × 25) ÷ 100 = 35.5

e atomic masses of all the atoms in one molecule, so Mᵣ(H₂O) = 2 × 1 + 16 = 18, and Mᵣ(CO₂) = 12 + 2 × 16 = 44. For ionic compounds, the same sum gives the relative formula mass.

5. Mole, Mass and Concentration |

in grams is numerically equal to the relative atomic or molecular mass of the substance, which is called the molar mass (g/mol).

n = m ÷ Mᵣ   |   c = n ÷ V   |   volume of gas = n × 24 dm³ (r.t.p.)

molar gas volume of 24 dm³/mol only applies at room temperature and pressure. For example, 4 g of NaOH (Mᵣ = 40) is 0.1 mol; dissolved in 250 cm³ of solution, its concentration is 0.1 ÷ 0.25 = 0.4 mol/dm³.

Two further formulas are often confused with the mole itself: percentage yield compares the actual mass of product obtained with the theoretical maximum, while atom economy compares the Mᵣ of the desired product with the total Mᵣ of all reactants. Percentage yield is about practical losses; atom economy is about the design of the reaction.

6. Empirical vs. Molecular Formula |

An empirical formula shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound. A molecular formula shows the actual number of atoms of each element in one molecule. Ethane has the molecular formula C₂H₆ but the empirical formula CH₃.

rcentage by the relative atomic mass of that element, then divide all the results by the smallest value, and finally multiply up if you do not obtain whole numbers. For example, an oxide containing 40% sulfur and 60% 3, so the empirical formula is SO₃. If the Mᵣ is known to be 80, the molecular formula is also SO₃.

he relationship is: molecular formula = (empirical formula) × (Mᵣ ÷ empirical formula mass).

7. Oxidation and Reduction |

In terms of electrons, oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons - remember OIL RIG (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain). In terms of oxidation number, oxidation is an increase in oxidation number and reduction is a decrease. An older but still examinable definition adds oxygen or removes hydrogen for oxidation, and the reverse for reduction.

OIL RIG(Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain)。

reduction, because electrons are gained and the oxidation number falls from 0 to −1). In the reaction Zn + Cu²⁺ → Zn²⁺ + Cu, zinc is oxidised and copper ions are reduced.
