📚 Energy Resources & Electricity Generation |

Energy resources are natural sources from which useful energy can be extracted or converted, particularly into electrical energy. Understanding how these resources work, how they compare, and how electricity is generated from them is a fundamental part of the Edexcel IGCSE Physics syllabus.

1. What Are Energy Resources? |

An energy resource is any material or natural phenomenon that can be used to generate useful energy. Energy resources can be divided into two broad categories: primary resources, which are found in nature (such as coal, wind, sunlight), and secondary resources, which are produced from primary resources (such as electricity).

For the IGCSE examination, you must be able to name the main energy resources, classify them as renewable or non-renewable, describe how each is used to generate electricity, and evaluate their advantages and disadvantages.

2. Renewable vs Non-Renewable |

The most important classification of energy resources is whether they are renewable or non-renewable.

Renewable energy resources can be naturally replenished within a human lifetime, so they will never run out. Examples include solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, wave, geothermal, and biomass energy.

Non-renewable energy resources exist in fixed quantities and will eventually be exhausted. They include fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium, plutonium).

Solar, wind, hydro, tidal, wave, geothermal, biomassCoal, oil, natural gas, nuclear fuels
Will they run out? No | 不会Yes | 会
CO₂ emissions | CO₂ 排放Zero or low | 零或低High (except nuclear) | 高(核能除外)

3. Fossil Fuels |

Fossil fuels — coal, oil, and natural gas — formed from the remains of ancient plants and marine organisms buried under high pressure and temperature for millions of years. They release chemical energy as heat when burned. This heat boils water to produce high-pressure steam that drives turbines.

Advantages: high energy density, reliable 24-hour operation, mature technology, and relatively low cost. Disadvantages: release CO₂ (a greenhouse gas), sulphur dioxide (causes acid rain), and particulates (air pollution); supplies are finite and extraction becomes harder and more expensive.

4. Nuclear Power |

Nuclear power stations release energy through nuclear fission — the splitting of large unstable nuclei such as uranium-235. When a slow neutron is absorbed by a U-235 nucleus, the nucleus splits into two smaller fragments, releasing a huge amount of energy as heat, plus 2–3 further neutrons that go on to split more nuclei in a chain reaction.

U-235 + ¹₀n → fission fragments + 2–3 ¹₀n + energy

The heat boils water into steam that spins a turbine. One kilogram of uranium produces roughly 20,000 times more energy than one kilogram of coal.

Advantages: no CO₂ emissions during operation, enormous energy density, and small fuel volume. Disadvantages: highly radioactive waste requires safe disposal for thousands of years, risk of catastrophic accidents, high construction and decommissioning costs.

5. Solar Energy |

Solar energy is harnessed using photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert light energy directly into electrical energy. These cells are made of semiconducting materials such as silicon. When sunlight strikes the cell, electrons are knocked loose and flow as an electric current.

Solar thermal panels are another application: they use sunlight to heat water directly in pipes for domestic hot water or heating, reducing electricity and gas usage.

Advantages: renewable, zero emissions during operation, silent, and can be installed on existing rooftops. Disadvantages: output varies with weather and daylight, low power per unit area, high initial panel cost, and requires energy storage or backup at night.

6. Wind Energy | 风能

Wind turbines capture the kinetic energy of moving air. The aerodynamic blades rotate as wind passes over them, turning a shaft connected to a generator inside the nacelle. The generator converts rotational kinetic energy into electrical energy using electromagnetic induction.

Wind farms can be onshore or offshore. Offshore installations benefit from stronger and more consistent winds at sea, producing more electricity per turbine, but are more expensive to build and maintain.

Advantages: renewable, no emissions, low running costs, and farmland can still be used between turbines. Disadvantages: intermittent (no power in calm weather), visual and noise disturbance, needs large land areas, and turbines can harm birds and bats.

7. Hydroelectric Power |

Hydroelectric power (HEP) converts the gravitational potential energy of water stored behind a dam into electrical energy. When water is released, it flows down through pipes, gaining kinetic energy, and strikes turbine blades, spinning them at high speed. The turbines drive generators to produce electricity.

Pumped storage is a special HEP system used to store energy. Surplus electricity at night pumps water back up into the upper reservoir; during peak demand, the water is released to generate electricity within minutes, helping to balance the grid.

Advantages: reliable, quick response to demand changes, zero emissions, and provides flood control. Disadvantages: very high construction cost, flooding of
