📚 Method Marks for Differentiation and Integration |
In Edexcel A-Level Mathematics, differentiation and integration questions are not simply marked right or wrong. They are marked using a scheme that rewards the method you show, not just the final answer. Understanding how method marks are awarded can help you pick up valuable marks even when a simplification or substitution goes wrong. This article explains where method marks come from in calculus, how examiners award them, and how to present clear working that secures them.
1. What are method marks? |
In Edexcel mark schemes, marks are usually separated into M marks, A marks and B marks. An M mark, or method mark, is awarded for using a correct or substantially correct procedure. An A mark is for the accuracy of the final result. A B mark is an independent mark, often for stating a derivative or integral directly. In differentiation and integration, M marks are commonly given for applying the chain rule, product rule, quotient rule, substitution, reverse chain rule or integration by parts.
The key idea is that the examiner is checking whether you know which procedure to use and whether you can set it up correctly. A method mark does not ask "is the answer right?" It asks "has the candidate shown a recognised, valid route towards the answer?"
This is why a student who writes down a correct rule, substitutes correctly, and then makes a small arithmetic slip can still score 3 out of 4, while a student who writes only the final answer - even a correct one - may score nothing beyond a possible B mark.
2. M, A and B marks in the mark scheme | 评分方案中的 M 分、A 分和 B 分
Mark schemes are written in a compact shorthand. A typical calculus question might be marked "M1 A1 A1" or "M1 A1 ft". The letters tell you what each mark rewards, and the order tells you where in the solution that mark is earned.
| Mark | What it rewards | Calculus example |
| M | A correct or substantially correct method or procedure | Applying the chain rule, choosing a valid substitution, setting up integration by parts |
| A | Accuracy of an answer or of a key intermediate expression | A fully simplified derivative such as 30x(3x² + 1)⁴ |
| B | An independent mark, no method required | Stating that d/dx (sin x) = cos x, or quoting a standard result |
Note the difference between "M" and "B". A B mark can be given for a bare statement of a standard result. An M mark almost always requires visible working: the examiner must be able to see the structure of the method on the page.
You will also see "ft" in mark schemes, meaning "follow through". Follow-through marks are awarded when a later step is correct for the candidate's earlier - wrong - value. They are one of the main reasons you should never abandon a question after a slip.
3. How examiners decide to award a method mark |
The single most common phrase in Edexcel mark schemes for calculus is "method mark for...". The examiner is looking for evidence of the method, and that evidence normally has to be written down.
Three principles matter. First, an independent method mark (often written M1) can be earned even if the rest of the question collapses, provided the correct method is clearly attempted. Second, a dependent method mark can only be earned if the previous step has been earned. Third, accuracy marks usually depend on the corresponding method mark, but follow-through allows later marks to survive an earlier error.
Examiners are also instructed not to penalise the same error twice. If you make one slip and carry it consistently through the question, you should usually lose only the accuracy marks attached to that slip, not every mark afterwards.
A useful habit is to think of every question as a short chain: set up the method, apply it, simplify, then interpret. One mark almost always sits at each link.
4. Where method marks come from in differentiation |
In differentiation questions, M marks are awarded for the choice and correct application of a differentiation technique. If you simply write the derivative without evidence, you are relying on the mark scheme having a B mark available, which it often does not.
tient; differentiating a function defined implicitly; differentiating parametric equations; differentiating trigonometric, exponential or logarithmic functions; setting dy/dx = 0 to find a stationary point; and differentiating from first principles.
For first principles, the method mark is awarded for writing a correct limit of the difference quotient, even before any algebra is done:
f′(x) = limh→0 [ f(x + h) − f(x) ] ÷ h
the M mark is for the structure of the rule, and the A mark is for the simplified result.
dy/dx = 5(3x² + 1)⁴ × 6x = 30x(3x² + 1)⁴
Notice that the middle expression - outer derivative multiplied by inner derivative - is exactly what the examiner needs to see. Writing only the final line risks the A mark and sometimes the M mark as well.
5. Chain, product and quotient rules: what must be visible |
Each rule has a recognisable "shape", and examiners are trained to look for that shape. If your working has the shape, the method mark is normally safe even if the numbers are wrong.
For the chain rule, the shape is an outer derivative multiplied by an inner derivative:
d/dx [ f(g(x)) ] = f′(g(x)) × g′(x)
For the product rule, the shape is two terms, each containing one differentiated factor:
d/dx (uv) = u′v + uv′
For the quotient rule, the shape is a fraction with a minus sign in the numerator and the square of the denominator underneath:
d/dx (u ÷ v) = (u′v − uv′) ÷ v²
A practical tip: before you differentiate, write down the pieces. For a product, write "u = ..., v = ..., u′ = ..., v′ = ..." se four short lines make the method unmistakable and often secure the M mark on their own.
For implicit differentiation, the method mark is for differentiating each term with respect to x and correctly producing a dy/dx term wherever y is differentiated:
d/dx (y²) = 2y · dy/dx
For parametric equations, the method mark is for setting up the chain of derivatives correctly before substituting anything.
dy/dx = (dy/dt) ÷ (dx/dt)
6. Where method marks come from in integration |
Integration mark schemes are usually even more generous with method marks than differentiation ones, because the strategies are harder to spot and the algebra is longer. Examiners expect candidates to try something, and they reward a sensible attempt.
Common sources of M marks in integration include: integrating a power of a linear function; using the reverse chain rule by inspection; integrating by substitution; integrating by parts; splitting an algebraic fraction into partial fractions before integrating; separating variables in a differential equation; and evaluating a definite integral by substituting the limits.
The reverse chain rule has a very recognisable pattern. If the integrand contains a function and (a multiple of) its derivative, the method mark is for recognising that pattern:
∫ f′(x) · g(f(x)) dx = G(f(x)) + c
For a power of a linear expression, the standard result is usually quoted and then applied:
∫ (ax + b)ⁿ dx = (ax + b)ⁿ⁺¹ ÷ (a(n + 1)) + c, n ≠ −1
In a definite integral, there are usually two method marks: one for integrating correctly (ignoring the limits), and one for correctly substituting the limits and subtracting.
∫ₐᵇ f′(x) dx = f(b) − f(a)
7. Substitution and the reverse chain rule |
Substitution questions have one of the most predictable mark structures in the whole specification. Once you know it, you can plan your working to match it line by line.
The first method mark is usually for a correct substitution and for differentiating it to find the relation between dx and du. The second method mark is for converting the whole integral into the new variable and integrating it. The accuracy mark follows for a correct result, and if the question is indefinite and in terms of x, there may be a further mark for substituting back.
Worked structure for ∫ 2x(x² + 1)⁵ dx with u = x² + 1:
以 u = x² + 1 计算 ∫ 2x(x² + 1)⁵ dx 的结构:
u = x² + 1, du/dx = 2x, so du = 2x dx
∫ u⁵ du = u⁶ ÷ 6 + c = (x² + 1)⁶ ÷ 6 + c
Every line here is a mark. If you wrote only the last expression, you would probably keep the accuracy mark but lose at least one method mark, because the substitution itself was never shown.
For definite integrals, changing the limits is itself a method mark in many schemes. Either change the limits to u-values at the start, or integrate in u and convert back to x before substituting. Both routes are acceptable; mixing them is not.
A related inspection example, where the reverse chain rule is expected rather than substitution:
∫ 6x² ex³ dx = 2ex³ + c
8. Integration by parts |
Integration by parts carries a clear method mark for choosing the parts and applying the formula. The formula itself is worth writing down, because it proves the method even before any substitution happens.
∫ u dv = uv − ∫ v du
The first M mark is for a sensible choice of u and dv. Good choices remove the difficulty: choose u as the part that becomes simpler when differentiated, such as ln x or x, and choose dv as the part you can integrate, such as eˣ dx.
For ∫ x eˣ dx, the standard solution is:
u = x, dv = eˣ dx, du = dx, v = eˣ
∫ x eˣ dx = x eˣ − ∫ eˣ dx = x eˣ − eˣ + c
For ∫
