📚 The Appointment Process for the Supreme Court: A Mathematical Perspective |
In A-Level Mathematics, real-world processes often provide excellent contexts for testing statistical and combinatorial reasoning. The appointment process for a supreme court, though rooted in law and politics, can be analysed using tools from the Edexcel specification: combinations, permutations, conditional probability, Bayes' theorem, binomial distributions, normal approximations, hypothesis tests, expectation, correlation and simulation. This article builds a simplified mathematical model of a supreme court appointment process and works through the core calculations step by step, keeping every number denable and every formula realistic for examination practice.
1. Modelling the Appointment Process |
A model is only as good as its assumptions, so we begin by naming the variables. Suppose a supreme court has 9 seats to fill and there are 12 qualified candidates. The president selects 4 finalists, a nomination committee reviews them, and the full legislature votes on confirmation. Each stage has its own counting or probability rule.
| k = 4 | finalists on the shortlist | 入围名单人数 |
| s = 9 | seats to be filled | 需要填补的席位 |
| p | probability a finalist is confirmed | 某入围者被确认的概率 |
Three assumptions keep the model tractable: each finalist is treated independently, the confirmation probability p is constant across nominations, and no strategic behaviour changes the rules mid-process. These assumptions are false in reality, but they allow standard A-Level tools to be applied and they make the model's limitations visible later.
2. Combinations in the Shortlist |
The president must first select 4 finalists to send to the nomination committee. At this stage the order of selection is not recorded, so a shortlist is an unordered subset and the number of ways to choose it is given by the combination formula.
C(12, 4) = 12! ÷ (4! × 8!) = 495
lls to C(10, 4) = 210, a useful reminder that the total changes whenever the pool changes.
ndidate occupies one of the 4 places and the remaining 3 are drawn from the other 11 people.
- No restriction: C(12, 4) = 495
