📚 Vagueness and Precision in Edexcel A-Level Maths | Edexcel A-Level
r imprecise mathematical language than through a lack of advanced technique. Words such as 'solve', 'show', 'state' and 'hence' each carry a specific demand, and symbols such as ≥, ∈ and ⇒ where imprecision appears and how to replace it with the precision that examiners reward.
1. What Is Vagueness in Mathematics? |
A statement is vague when it admits more than one possible interpretation, or when a definition is left so wide that it cannot be tested. In A-Level Maths a vague answer might say 'the graph goes up' instead of 'f(x) is strictly increasing for x > 0'. The second version is precise because it names the variable, the interval and the direction of change.
Precision can be tested in three practical ways. A claim must be quantified (which variable or quantity is under discussion), qualified (on which interval or under which conditions) and decidable (a marker can judge whether it is true or false). 'The function is increasing' fails all three tests; 'f is strictly increasing on the interval [1, 4]' passes all three.
Examiners award method marks only when the reasoning is unambiguous. Writing 'x is positive' is less useful than writing 'x > 0'. Both may be true, but the inequality pins down a mathematical condition that can be carried into the next line of working. Here are three typical conversions from vague to precise.
- Vague: 'x is small'. Precise: '0 < x < 0.01'.
- Vague: 'the sequence increases'. Precise: 'uₙ₊₁ > uₙ for all n ∈ ℕ'.
- Vague: 'the answer is about 2'. Precise: '2.0 (1 d.p.)' or '≈ 1.98'.
2. Vagueness in Set Notation |
Set notation is a common source of vague writing. Saying 'x is a real number' is fine in speech, but 'x ∈ ℝ' is sharper. If a solution set is every real number except 2, write {x ∈ ℝ : x ≠ 2} rather than 'x is not 2'. The braces make the set explicit and the colon means 'such that'.
For an inequality such as x² - 4 > 0, the solution is not 'x > 2 and x < -2', which describes an empty set, but the union of two intervals.
{x : x < -2} ∪ {x : x > 2} , also written (-∞, -2) ∪ (2, ∞)
The symbol ∪ removes the ambiguity of whether the English word 'and' means intersection or union. In mathematics ∪ is union and ∩ is intersection, so 'x > 2 and x < -2' is impossible, whereas {x : x < -2} ∪ {x : x > 2} is a perfectly good solution set. If there is genuinely no solution, say so explicitly, for example 'no real values of x, so the solution set is ∅', rather than leaving the answer space blank.
3. Domain and Range: Implicit vs Explicit |
licit maximal domain is every real number except 2, and this must be written explicitly as 'x ∈ ℝ, x ≠ 2'. The corresponding range is 'f(x) ∈ ℝ, f(x) ≠ 0', because a fraction with numerator 1 can never equal zero.
ause values of x below 1 are not allowed. Completing the square makes the range explicit: f(x) = x² - 4x + 7 = (x - 2)² + 3, so the minimum value is 3 and the range is f(x) ≥ 3, or [3, ∞).
nt and square brackets include it, so (2, 5] means 2 < x ≤ 5. If a question asks you to 'state the range', give the inequality or interval, not simply the minimum value: '3' alone is a value, not a range.
4. Command Words and Their Precise Demands |
Edexcel command words are instructions, not decoration. 'Solve' requires all values that satisfy an equation; 'show that' requires a logical derivation of a given result; 'state' or 'write down' means no working is needed but the answer must be exact; 'hence' means the previous part must be used. Ignoring these demands loses marks even when the mathematics is correct.
