📚 How the Pandemic Affects Chinese Students' Path to Studying in the UK |
The year 2020 turned the road to a UK education into a winding one. Campuses closed, English language test centres shut their doors, A-level exams were cancelled and international flights were grounded, while families across China kept asking the same two questions: can we still apply to British universities, and can we still go there to study? This article answers those questions step by step, keeps every original concern intact, and explains why the disruption also opened a window of opportunity.
1. 2020: A Year of Twists and Turns | 2020
For a huge number of UK-bound students, the study path suffered serious disruption during 2020. The first shock arrived in spring, when the UK entered national lockdown, lecture theatres and libraries closed, and every university moved teaching online within a matter of weeks. Test centres for IELTS and other exams closed across China and many other countries, so thousands of applicants suddenly had no way to prove their English level at the moment they needed it most.
Summer brought a different kind of turbulence. A-level and GCSE exams were cancelled in the UK and replaced by calculated grades, a system that collapsed publicly on results day and had to be reversed within days. Travellers faced 14-day quarantine rules and shifting travel corridors, and flight schedules between China and the UK were cut to a fraction of normal capacity. By autumn, campuses reopened in a hybrid form, only for a second wave and a further lockdown to arrive in the winter.
In short, the year unfolded in three phases: a spring shutdown, a summer of uncertainty, and an autumn restart haunted by a winter second wave. Every phase changed something concrete for applicants, from test booking to visa timing to whether a first term would be taught in a seminar room or on a laptop at home.
2. The Question Every Family Is Asking |
Many parents and students who were preparing to apply to UK institutions wrote in with exactly the same worry: "Can we still apply to British universities? Can we still go to the UK to study?" Behind those two sentences sit several deeper fears, and it is worth naming them clearly because each one has a practical answer.
The first fear is safety: will my child be exposed to infection in a country with a high case count? The second is academic value: if teaching is online, is a UK degree still worth the money? The third is procedural: will visas, CAS numbers, English tests and flights actually work in a disrupted system? The fourth is timing: should we apply now, defer a year, or wait and see?
3. Why the Answer Is Still Yes |
The answer is unquestionably yes, and it is precisely a good moment to seize the opportunity. UK universities did not close their doors to international applicants at any point in 2020. Admissions offices kept processing applications, interviews moved online, and offers continued to be issued throughout the spring and summer. Higher education is one of the UK's most internationally oriented sectors, and Chinese students form its largest single group of overseas students.
There is also a structural reason for that openness. International tuition fees are a core part of university budgets, and a shrinking intake would damage course provision, research funding and staff numbers. Universities therefore had strong institutional incentives to keep recruiting, to reassure applicants, and to build support in China itself, including in-country offices, virtual offer-holder events and local alumni networks.
4. Admissions Flexibility: How Universities Adapted |
The most visible change was flexibility in admissions rules. Many institutions extended application and deposit deadlines, allowed documents to be submitted later than usual, accepted scanned or digital transcripts in place of hard copies, and moved interviews and portfolio reviews online. Some relaxed entry requirements slightly for certain courses, and a number of postgraduate programmes made standardised tests optional or waived them entirely for the disrupted cycle.
Universities also became far more willing to communicate directly. Virtual fairs, one-to-one video consultations and country-specific webinars replaced physical recruitment trips, which in practice made it easier for a student in a second-tier Chinese city to speak to an admissions officer without travelling. If you are applying now, use that access: ask specific questions about your course, your test evidence and your deferral options in writing, and keep the replies.
5. English Language Tests and Pre-sessional Courses |
With IELTS centres shut for months, UK universities introduced temporary alternatives at speed. Duolingo English Test, IELTS Indicator, PTE Academic, LanguageCert and various online proctored tests were accepted by a large number of institutions for the 2020 and 2021 intakes. Pre-sessional English courses, traditionally taught on campus, were delivered online so that students could complete them from China before travelling.
Two cautions matter here. First, acceptance was temporary and university-specific, so you must check the exact list for your target institution and intake rather than assuming a test is universally recognised. Second, visa rules are separate from admissions rules: for certain visa routes, a Secure English Language Test taken at an approved centre may still be required, so always confirm with the university's immigration team before you book.
| IELTS Indicator | Admissions only / 仅用于录取 | Not a SELT / 非签证类考试 |
| PTE Academic / PTE 学术英语 | Admissions, some visa routes / 录取及部分签证 | Check UKVI status / 核对 UKVI 资质 |
6. Online, Blended and Hybrid Learning |
Teaching models changed fundamentally. The dominant pattern became blended or dual delivery: large lectures recorded or streamed, small-group seminars and tutorials run on campus with distancing, and laboratory or studio work rescheduled where possible. Some students began their degree entirely from China in the first term because of visa delays or travel restrictions, then joined campus later in the year.
This raised a legitimate question about value for money, and universities responded unevenly. Some offered fee reductions for fully online terms, some reduced or refunded accommodation charges, and some allowed students to postpone arrival without losing their place. When you compare offers, look beyond the headline tuition figure and ask what proportion of teaching is guaranteed in person, what happens if restrictions return, and what the refund policy states in writing.
7. Visas, CAS and Post-Study Work Rights | 签证、CAS 与毕业工作签证
On the immigration side, the headline change was the launch of the Student route on 5 October 2020, which replaced the Tier 4 system and simplified some requirements for genuine students. Visa application centres in China reopened in stages, priority services were limited at times, and universities issued guidance on when a CAS could be issued and how remote study interacted with visa conditions.
The bigger long-term draw was the Graduate Route, announced in 2019 and launched on 1 July 2021. It allows eligible graduates to stay and work, or look for work, for two years after a bachelor's or master's degree, and three years after a PhD, without needing a sponsor. For Chinese students weighing the UK against other destinations, this visibly improved the return on a UK degree.
8. Flights, Quarantine and Getting There | 航班、隔离与出行
Logistics became a subject in its own right. Direct flights between China and the UK were heavily reduced, routes often ran through a third hub, and ticket prices and availability fluctuated sharply. Arrivals faced a 14-day quarantine requirement, later modified by travel corridors and testing rules that changed at short notice, so flexibility in booking became as important as price.
Many universities stepped in with practical support: airport pickup, quarantine accommodation packages, help with food delivery during isolation, and dedicated arrival webpages. Before you fly, confirm in writing whether the university arranges quarantine housing, what it costs, whether the cost is refundable, and what documentation you must carry to show at the border.
9. Money: Tuition, Deposits, Refunds and Scholarships |
Financially, the picture was mixed. Headline tuition fees largely stayed the same, but a weaker pound at times reduced the RMB cost of studying in the UK, offsetting part of the burden. At the same time, families had to plan for quarantine costs, higher airfares, testing fees and the possibility of paying rent for accommodation they could not occupy.
Deposit and refund policies therefore deserve close reading. Ask what happens to your deposit if a visa is refused, if travel is impossible, or if the course moves fully online; ask whether the tuition fee is locked at the year of entry or rises annually; and check scholarship schemes such as Chevening, GREAT scholarships and university merit awards, many of which remained open throughout the disruption.
10. A-level Results, UCAS and Grade Inflation | A-Level 成绩、UCAS 与分数膨胀
For undergraduate applicants, the most dramatic episode came in August 2020. Examinations were cancelled, grades were initially produced by an algorithm, and after widespread criticism the UK government reversed course and awarded centre-assessed grades instead. The result was significant grade inflation, record numbers of students meeting their offers, and intense pressure on university places and Clearing.
Chinese students were affected in two ways. Some were studying A-levels, IB or AP programmes whose examinations were also disrupted, and had to rely on predicted or internally assessed results. Others were applying from the Chinese system and found that universities leaned more heavily on school transcripts, personal statements and interviews when external evidence was unreliable, which made the non-exam parts of an application more important than usual.
11. Defer or Enrol Now? A Decision Framework |
One of the most common family dilemmas was whether to defer entry by a year. There is no single right answer, but the decision becomes clearer if you separate it into five questions: how much of your course depends on laboratories, studios or clinical placements; how comfortable you are with online learning; what your financial buffer looks like; whether your visa and travel route are realistically workable; and how a gap year would actually be spent.
Deferral works best when the course is practice-heavy, when you have a concrete plan for the year, and when the university confirms in writing that your place and fee band are protected.
Enrolling now works best when the course is reading- and seminar-based, when you want to start building your network and CV, and when you can study remotely from China in the first term without losing momentum.
Whatever you choose, get the decision confirmed in writing, and keep copies of every email, offer letter and policy page.
12. Turning Disruption into Opportunity: Your Action Plan |
It is worth remembering that the disruption also reshaped the competitive landscape. With Brexit, EU students starting courses in England from 2021/22 lost home fee status and access to student loans, which made UK study markedly more expensive for them and, in practice, reduced a source of competition for places. At the same time, universities were more motivated than ever to attract and retain international students.
