1. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |

Atoms have a tiny central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in shells (energy levels). Almost all of the mass is concentrated in the nucleus, while almost all of the volume is the empty space occupied by the electron shells.

f protons = number of electrons, so the charges balance. Mass number = protons + neutrons.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons. They have identical chemical properties but slightly different physical properties and masses. The relative atomic mass (Ar) is the weighted mean mass of the isotopes of an element compared with 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.

Ar = Σ(同位素丰度 × 该同位素质量数) ÷ 100

Electron shells fill in the order 2, 8, 8, and the outer-shell electrons determine chemical behaviour. The group number equals the number of outer electrons; the period number equals the number of occupied shells.

Group 1 (alkali metals) 第1族(碱金属)Reactivity increases down the group; form +1 ions 反应性随族向下增强;形成 +1 离子
Group 7 (halogens) 第7族(卤素)Reactivity decreases down the group; form −1 ions 反应性向下减弱;形成 −1 离子

2. Bonding, Structure and Properties of Matter |

Ionic bonding happens between metals and non-metals. Electrons are transferred from the metal atom to the non-metal atom, producing positive and negative ions held together in a giant ionic lattice by strong electrostatic attraction.

Ionic compounds have high melting points, dissolve in water, and conduct electricity only when molten or in aqueous solution because the ions must be free to move.

Covalent bonding happens between non-metals, where atoms share pairs of electrons. Simple molecular substances have weak intermolecular forces, so they have low melting and boiling points and do not conduct electricity.

Giant covalent structures such as diamond, graphite and silicon dioxide have very high melting points. Diamond is hard because each carbon forms four strong covalent bonds; graphite is soft and conducts electricity because each carbon forms only three bonds, leaving delocalised electrons between layers.

Metallic bonding consists of positive metal ions arranged in a regular lattice, surrounded by a 'sea' of delocalised electrons. This explains why metals conduct heat and electricity, and why they are malleable.

Simple molecule 简单分子Low 低No 否
Giant covalent 巨型共价Very high 很高Graphite only 仅石墨

3. Quantitative Chemistry: Moles and Calculations |

ich is the Avogadro constant. Mole calculations appear in almost every OCR paper, so the three core equations must be automatic.

n = m ÷ M   (moles = mass ÷ molar mass)

c = n ÷ V   (concentration in mol dm⁻³)

es 24 dm³, so gas volume = moles × 24. Remember to convert cm³ to dm³ by dividing by 1000.

Balanced equations give the mole ratio. In excess-and-limiting reagent questions, always work out which reactant runs out first, then use that reactant to calculate the product.

Percentage yield compares the actual mass obtained with the theoretical mass; atom economy compares the mass of the desired product with the total mass of all products. Both are calculated as a percentage.

% yield = (actual ÷ theoretical) × 100  |  % atom economy = (M of desired product ÷ total M of products) × 100

4. Chemical Changes: Acids, Redox and Electrolysis |

The reactivity series ranks metals from potassium (most reactive) to gold (least reactive). A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its compound, and metals above hydrogen displace hydrogen from dilute acids.

Oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons; a helpful memory aid is OIL RIG. In a redox reaction, the reducing agent is oxidised and the oxidising agent is reduced.

ioxide. Hydrogen is tested with a lit splint (squeaky pop) and carbon dioxide turns limewater milky.

Acids produce H⁺ ions in aqueous solution and alkalis produce OH⁻ ions; neutralisation forms water. Strong acids ionise completely, weak acids only partially, which explains the difference in pH and in conductivity for the same concentration.

In electrolysis, the cathode is negative and attracts positive ions, where reduction occurs; the anode is positive and attracts negative ions, where oxidation occurs. In aqueous solutions, hydrogen is produced at the cathode if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen, and oxygen is produced at the anode unless a halide is present.

5. Energy Changes in Reactions |

Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings and the temperature rises; the products have less energy than the reactants. Combustion, neutralisation and respiration are exothermic. Endothermic reactions absorb energy and the temperature falls; thermal decomposition and photosynthesis are endothermic.

Reaction profiles show the energy of reactants and products with the activation energy as the barrier that must be overcome. Catalysts lower the activation energy but do not change the overall energy change.

ΔH = energy to break bonds − energy released when new bonds form

If more energy is released when new bonds form than is used to break the old bonds, the reaction is exothermic and ΔH is negative.

Required practical: measuring the temperature change when a metal reacts with a solution, or when an acid neutralises an alkali. Plot the results and control variables such as volume, concentration and starting temperature.

Chemical cells and fuel cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy. A simple cell needs two different metals and an electrolyte; hydrogen fuel cells produce only water as a product.

6. Rates of Reaction and Equilibrium |

The rate of a reaction depends on concentration, temperature, surface area, pressure of gases and the presence of a catalyst. Higher temperature and higher concentration increase the frequency and energy of collisions, so the rate increases.

Collision theory states that particles must collide with at least the activation energy in order to react. Increasing surface area by using a powder instead of a lump exposes more particles to collisions.

Rates can be measured by gas volume produced, mass lost, colour change or time taken for a precipitate to obscure a cross. Graphs of rate always show the curve becoming less steep as reactants are used up.

Reversible reactions reach equilibrium when the forward and reverse rates are equal in a closed system. If the position of equilibrium shifts, it changes the amounts of reactants and products but not the rates being equal.

Le Chatelier's principle: if a condition changes, the position of equilibrium shifts to oppose the change. Increasing temperature shifts equilibrium in the endothermic direction; increasing pressure shifts it towards the side with fewer gas molecules.

7. Crude Oil, Hydrocarbons and Polymers |

Crude oil is a finite resource and a mixture of hydrocarbons separated by fractional distillation, based on different boiling points. Smaller molecules have lower boiling points and are collected nearer the top of the column.

Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. They are used as fuels and burn to produce carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy.

Cracking breaks long-chain hydrocarbons into shorter, more useful molecules, producing alkanes and alkenes. Alkenes are unsaturated, with the general formula CₙH₂ₙ, and they decolourise bromine water from orange to colourless.

Alkenes undergo addition polymerisation to form polymers such as poly(ethene) and poly(propene). The monomer and polymer have the same empirical formula, and the reaction has 100% atom economy.

Natural polymers include starch, cellulose, proteins and DNA, all formed by condensation polymerisation, which releases a small molecule such as water. Amino acids join by peptide bonds to make polypeptides.

8. Chemical Analysis and Purification |

A pure substance melts and boils at a specific temperature; an impure substance melts over a range and at a lower temperature. Melting point and boiling point data are therefore used to test purity.

Paper chromatography separates mixtures of soluble substances. The Rf value is calculated as distance moved by the spot divided by distance moved by the solvent front, and it varies with the solvent used.

Rf = distance moved by substance ÷ distance moved by solvent

Gas tests to memorise: hydrogen gives a squeaky pop with a lit splint; oxygen relights a glowing splint; carbon dioxide turns limewater milky; chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper.

Flame tests identify metal ions: lithium gives crimson, sodium yellow, potassium lilac, calcium orange-red and copper blue-green. Sodium hydroxide solution gives coloured precipitates with metal ions, and dilute acid with barium chloride tests for sulfate ions.

Carbonates react with dilute acid to produce carbon dioxide, and halide ions are tested with silver nitrate solution: chloride gives a white precipitate, bromide cream and iodide yellow.

9. The Atmosphere and Climate |

The early atmosphere was formed by volcanic activity and was mainly carbon dioxide with little or no oxygen, similar to the atmospheres of Mars and Venus today. It also contained nitrogen, water vapour and small amounts of methane and ammonia.

As the Earth cooled, water vapour condensed to form the oceans. Carbon dioxide dissolved in the oceans and was locked up in sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels. Plants and algae then produced oxygen by photosynthesis.

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂  (photosynthesis)

Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour absorb infrared radiation and re-emit it, warming the Earth. Increasing concentrations of these gases are linked to climate change, and the carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gases emitted by an activity.

The main atmospheric pollutants are carbon monoxide (incomplete combustion, toxic), nitrogen oxides (spark in engines, cause acid rain), sulfur dioxide (burning fossil fuels, causes acid rain) and particulates (health problems).
