📚 Set Notation for A-Level Edexcel Maths | A-Level Edexcel
Set notation is the precise language mathematicians use to describe collections of objects, numbers, events and outcomes. In Edexcel A-Level Mathematics it appears across pure mathematics, statistics and probability, so fluency with the symbols is essential both for solving problems and for communicating your reasoning clearly in the exam hall.
1. What is Set Notation? |
In mathematics, a set is a well-defined collection of objects called elements or members. For example, A from 2 to 8. The order of the elements does not matter, so {2, 4, 6, 8} and {8, 6, 4, 2} describe exactly the same set, and repeated elements are not listed twice - {2, 2, 4, 6, 8} is simply written {2, 4, 6, 8}.
Set notation is a system of symbols that lets us describe collections and the relationships between them without ambiguity. In Edexcel A-Level Mathematics you will meet these symbols in pure mathematics (inequalities, functions, proof), in statistics (data classification) and especially in probability, where events are modelled as sets.
2. Basic Symbols: Element, Universal Set and Empty Set |
The symbol ∈ means 'is an element of'. If A = {2, 4, 6, 8}, then 2 ∈ A is a true statement. The symbol ∉ means 'is not an element of', so 5 ∉ A is also true. Two sets are equal, written A = B, when they contain exactly the same elements.
The universal set, usually written U or ξ (xi), is the set of all elements relevant to a particular problem. It might be all integers from 1 to 10, all real numbers, or all students in a school. The empty set, written ∅ or { }, contains no elements at all and is a subset of every set. Be careful: ∅ and {∅} are different - the second one is a set containing one element, namely the empty set.
- ∈ : is an element of / 属于
- ∉ : is not an element of / 不属于
- ξ or U : universal set / 全集
- ∅ or { } : empty set / 空集
- n(A) : the number of elements in set A / 集合 A 的元素个数
- ξ 或 U:全集
- n(A):集合 A 中元素的个数
If A = {2, 4, 6, 8}, then 2 ∈ A and 5 ∉ A
3. Subsets and Proper Subsets |
If every element of set B is also an element of set A, then B is a subset of A, written B ⊆ A. For example, if A = {2, 4, 6, 8} and B = {2, 6}, then B ⊆ A, because both 2 and 6 belong to A.
如果集合 B 的每一个元素都是集合 A 的元素,则称 B 是 A 的子集,记作 B ⊆ A。例如,若 A = {2, 4, 6, 8},B = {2, 6},则 B ⊆ A,因为 2 和 6 都属于 A。
If B ⊆ A but B ≠ A, then B is a proper subset of A, written B ⊂ A. The symbol ⊄ means 'is not a subset of'. Two important facts: every set is a subset of itself, and the empty set ∅ is a subset of every set. A set with n elements has exactly 2ⁿ subsets in total.
若 B ⊆ A 但 B ≠ A,则称 B 是 A 的真子集,记作 B ⊂ A。
| Symbol | Meaning |
| ⊆ | is a subset of | 是……
| ⊂ | is a proper subset of | 是……
| ⊄ | is not a subset of | 不是……
4. Set Builder Notation and Intervals |
Sets with infinitely many elements cannot be listed, so we use set builder notation: {x : x > 3} reads 'the set of all x such that x is greater than 3'. To make the domain clear we can write {x ∈ ℝ : x ≤ 5}, which means all real numbers less than or equal to 5.
et means the endpoint is included, and a round bracket means it is excluded: [2, 7] is 2 ≤ x ≤ 7, while (2, 7) is 2 < x < 7. Mixed intervals such as [2, 7) are common in inequality answers.
{x ∈ ℝ : 2 ≤ x < 7} = [2, 7)
5. Union, Intersection and Complement |
The union of two sets, written A ∪ B, is the set of all elements that are in A or in B (or in both). The intersection, written A ∩ B, is the set of elements that are in both A and B. If A ∩ B = ∅ the sets are disjoint, or mutually exclusive.
The complement of A, written A′, is the set of elements in the universal set ξ that are not in A. Some textbooks write A′ as Aᶜ or ξ \ A. The set difference A \ B contains the elements that are in A but not in B.
有些教材把 A′ 写作 Aᶜ 或 ξ \ A。
For counting problems, the key formula links the sizes of two sets:
n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) − n(A ∩ B)
This identity is the reason we subtract the overlap: elements in A ∩ B would otherwise be counted twice. For three sets the formula extends to include all pairwise overlaps and the triple overlap.
6. Venn Diagrams and Set Language |
A Venn diagram represents the universal set ξ as a rectangle and each subset as a circle inside it. Shading a region is simply writing a set expression in pictures, and Edexcel frequently asks you to either shade a given region or describe a shaded region using symbols.
- A ∩ B : the overlap of the two circles /
- A ∪ B : everything inside either circle /
- A′ : everything outside circle A but inside the rectangle / 圆 A 之外、矩形之内的区域
- (A ∩ B)′ : everything except the overlap /
When a question gives numbers rather than symbols, a good habit is to start with the intersection, then fill the 'only A' and 'only B' regions, and finally check that everything inside the rectangle adds up to n(ξ).
7. Number Sets: ℕ, ℤ, ℚ, ℝ and ℂ | 数集:ℕ、ℤ、ℚ、ℝ 与 ℂ
Edexcel uses special letters for standard number sets. These symbols let you state a domain precisely, which is important when solving inequalities, defining functions or answering proof questions.
| Symbol | Set |
| ℕ | natural numbers {1, 2, 3, ...} | 自然数 |
| ℤ | integers {..., −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, ...} | 整数 |
| ℚ | rational numbers | 有理数 |
| ℝ | real numbers | 实数 |
| ℂ | complex numbers | 复数 |
The relationships between these sets can be written compactly: ℕ ⊂ ℤ ⊂ ℚ ⊂ ℝ ⊂ ℂ. Recognising this chain helps you decide whether a counter-example is valid - for instance, disproving a statement about ℤ using x = ½ is not allowed, whereas using x = 3 is.
8. Sets in Probability: Events and Sample Space |
In probability, the universal set is the sample space, often written S or ξ, and an event is a subset of the sample space. If A and B are events then P(A) is the probability that A occurs, P(A′) = 1 − P(A), and A ∩ B represents 'both A and B occur'.
若 A、B 是事件,则 P(A) 表示 A 发生的概率,P(A′) = 1 − P(A),而 A ∩ B 表示"A 与 B 同时发生"。
- A ∪ B : 'A or B' - the addition rule / "A 或 B"——加法法则
- A ∩ B : 'A and B' / "A 且 B"
- A ∩ B = ∅ : mutually exclusive /
- A ∪ B:表示"A 或 B"——加法法则
- A ∩ B:表示"A 且 B"
- A ∩ B = ∅:互斥
- A ∪ B = ξ:完备
The addition rule is simply the counting formula divided by n(ξ), and for mutually exclusive events the last term vanishes:
P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A ∩ B)
9. Conditional Probability and Independence |
Conditional probability uses a vertical bar: P(A | B) means 'the probability of A given that B has occurred'. Because we now restrict attention to the set B, the formula is a ratio of two probabilities rather than a fraction of the whole sample space.
P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) ÷ P(B), provided P(B) ≠ 0
Two events are independent if the occurrence of one does not change the probability of the other, which is equivalent to P(A | B) = P(A) and hence to the product rule below. Always check this condition before using the product rule.
P(A | B) = P(A),因而也等价于下面的乘法公式。
P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B) if and only if A and B are independent
10. De Morgan's Laws and Useful Identities |
De Morgan's laws describe how complements interact with unions and intersections. They are very common in Edexcel probability and pure questions because they allow you to rewrite a complicated expression into one that is easier to shade or evaluate.
