📚 The German Revolution 1918–19 | 1918–19
The German Revolution of 1918–19 was a transformative yet incomplete upheaval that ended the Hohenzollern monarchy and created the Weimar Republic. It began as a mutiny against a hopeless naval order, spread through workers' and soldiers' councils, forced the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and resulted in a parliamentary democracy. However, the revolution also produced violent conflict between moderate Social Democrats and radical leftists, shaping the weaknesses of the new republic. For Edexcel A-Level History, this topic requires careful analysis of causation, continuity, change, and historiographical debate.

On 29 September 1918, General Ludendorff told the government that an armistice must be requested immediately.
To secure better peace terms and shift blame away from the military, the high command pushed for a 'revolution from above'. A new civilian government under Prince Max of Baden was appointed, including the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The aim was to present Germany as a reformed constitutional monarchy, but the reform came too late to satisfy popular anger.
2. The Kiel Mutiny and the Spread of Revolution |
