📚 Edexcel A-Level Chemistry: Electron Configuration and Orbital Filling | 爱德思 A-Level 化学:电子构型与轨道填充
Electron configuration describes how the electrons of an atom are distributed among shells, subshells and orbitals. It is the bridge between the abstract model of the atom and the observable chemistry of the Periodic Table, because it predicts oxidation states, atomic radius, ionisation energy, magnetic behaviour and bonding. In the Edexcel A-Level Chemistry specification you must be able to write configurations for atoms and ions using s, p and d subshell notation, apply the Aufbau principle, the Pauli exclusion principle and Hund's rule, and explain the anomalies shown by chromium and copper.
1. Why Electron Configuration Matters |
Chemical behaviour is controlled by the outermost electrons, so configuration is the single most useful tool for predicting how an element will react. It explains why sodium forms only Na⁺, why iron can form both Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺, and why the noble gases are almost completely inert. It also accounts for the trends in atomic radius, first ionisation energy and electronegativity across a period, and for the similarities between elements in the same group. The Edexcel specification explicitly requires you to link an element's electron configuration to its position in the Periodic Table, so you should be able to move confidently between a configuration, a block and a group number.
2. Principal Quantum Shells |
the principal quantum number n = 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. The value of n indicates the shell' ly charged nucleus. The maximum number of electrons that a shell can hold is given by the expression 2n², so shell 1 holds 2 electrons, shell 2 holds 8, shell 3 holds 18 and shell 4 holds 32.
Maximum electrons in a shell = 2n²
al point is that a shell does not fill completely before the next shell starts to fill. The 4s subshell is occupied before the 3d subshell, which is why the fourth period of the Periodic Table begins before the third shell is 'full' in energy terms.
3. Subshells and Orbitals |
Within a shell, electrons occupy subshells named s, p, d and f in order of increasing energy. Each subshell contains a fixed number of orbitals, and each orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons with opposite spins. An s subshell has 1 orbital and holds 2 electrons, a p subshell has 3 orbitals and holds 6 electrons, a d subshell has 5 orbitals and holds 10 electrons, while an f subshell has 7 orbitals and holds 14 electrons.
An orbital is a region of space in which there is a high probability of finding an electron. It is not a fixed path or orbit. s orbitals are spherical, p orbitals are dumbbell-shaped and arranged along the x, y and z axes, and d orbitals are more complex in shape. The notation 1s² means 'two electrons in the 1s orbital', and 2p⁶ means 'six electrons in the three 2p orbitals'.
4. The Three Filling Rules |
Three rules together determine how electrons are placed into orbitals. The Aufbau principle states that electrons fill the lowest available energy level first. The Pauli exclusion principle states that an orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons, and they must have opposite spins. Hund's rule states that when orbitals of equal energy (degenerate orbitals) are available, electrons occupy them singly with parallel spins before any pairing occurs.
