1. Computational Thinking and Problem Decomposition |

Programming begins before any code is written. Computational thinking is the set of mental tools used to turn a messy real-world problem into something a computer can solve: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design. In Edexcel tasks you are expected to break a complex problem into smaller subprograms so that each part can be built, tested and debugged independently.

Decomposition means splitting a large problem into manageable modules, for example separating "user login", "score calculation" and "leaderboard display" in a quiz game. Pattern recognition means spotting repeated structures, such as the same validation routine needed for every input field, so you can reuse one solution. Abstraction means removing unnecessary detail and keeping only what matters for the solution, such as modelling a customer by an ID, name and balance rather than their whole life story.

A strong answer usually states the inputs, the processing and the outputs before writing pseudocode. Ask yourself: what data comes in, what transformation is required, what must be returned or displayed, and what could go wrong? Answering these four questions converts a vague brief into a testable specification, and it is exactly what the mark scheme rewards in the longer design questions.

2. Algorithm Design and Representation |

An algorithm is a finite sequence of unambiguous steps that solves a problem. Edexcel expects you to read and write algorithms in pseudocode and to interpret flowcharts. Learn the standard keywords well, because marks are awarded for correct structure rather than for elegant English.

A trace table is the safest way to earn full marks in "dry run" questions. Create one column per variable, one row per iteration, and record every value change in order. Flowcharts use a parallelogram for input/output, a rectangle for process, a diamond for decision, and a terminator for start and end. Never leave a decision diamond without both a Yes and a No branch.

trace value: total ← total + item[i]   for i = 1 to n

3. Programming Constructs: Sequence, Selection, Iteration |

Every program, however complex, is built from three constructs. Sequence is executing statements in order. Selection is choosing a path based on a Boolean condition. Iteration is repeating statements either a fixed number of times (definite) or until a condition changes (indefinite). Recognising which construct a problem needs is often worth more marks than writing the code itself.

Use a WHILE loop when the number of repetitions is unknown and the loop may run zero times, such as "keep asking for a password until it is correct or three attempts have been used". Use a REPEAT ... UNTIL loop when the body must run at least once, such as displaying a menu before validating the choice. Use FOR ... NEXT when the count is known in advance, such as processing every element of an array of 20 results.

Common patterns you should be able to write from memory include: a running total, a maximum or minimum finder, a counter for items meeting a condition, a linear search, and a menu-driven main loop. Combining a counter with a total lets you compute an average, and guarding the division against a zero count prevents a division-by-zero runtime error.

average ← total ÷ count   (only when count > 0)

4. Data Types, Variables, Operators and Boolean Logic |

Choosing the right data type saves memory and prevents errors. The core types are integer, real (float), Boolean, character and string. A variable's value can change during execution; a constant is fixed at design time and should be used for values such as VAT rate or maximum array size, because changing one declaration updates the whole program.

ey are used to test divisibility, extract digits, convert between units, and wrap around a circular list. Be careful with the precedence of operators: brackets first, then exponent, then × ÷ DIV MOD, then + −, and finally comparisons and Boolean operators.

OperatorMeaningExample
DIVinteger quotient17 DIV 5 = 3
MODremainder17 MOD 5 = 2
^exponent (power)210 = 1024
AND / OR / NOTBoolean operatorsA AND NOT B

Boolean algebra appears in logic-gate and condition-simplification questions. Memorise De Morgan's laws: NOT (A AND B) is equivalent to (NOT A) OR (NOT B), and NOT (A OR B) is equivalent to (NOT A) AND (NOT B). These transformations let you rewrite a condition so that it is shorter, faster to evaluate, and easier for another programmer to read.

要背下德摩根定律:NOT (A AND B) 等价于 (NOT A) OR (NOT B);NOT (A OR B) 等价于 (NOT A) AND (NOT B)。

5. Data Structures: Arrays, Records, Lists and Abstract Types |

A data structure is a way of organising related data so that it can be stored, searched and updated efficiently. One-dimensional arrays hold a fixed number of elements of the same type, accessed by index. Two-dimensional arrays store tabular data, such as a grid in a game or a table of student marks across five subjects.

A record groups different data types under one name, for example a Student record with fields ID (integer), Name (string) and Average (real). Records are ideal for file handling because each record can be written as one line or one block, then read back into the same structure. Arrays of records are the standard way to hold a small database in memory.

StructureOrdering ruleTypical use
StackLIFO (last in, first out)undo history, call stack, expression evaluation
QueueFIFO (first in, first out)print jobs, keyboard buffer, breadth-first search
Linked listnodes with pointersdynamic insertion and deletion
Binary search treeleft < node < rightfast ordered search and insertion
Hash tablekey mapped by hash functionnear-constant-time lookup

For stacks, describe operations as push and pop; for queues, as enqueue and dequeue. Mention the underflow (removing from an empty structure) and overflow (adding to a full structure) conditions, because examiners frequently award a mark for each. For trees, practise writing the pre-order, in-order and post-order traversals of a small diagram, and remember that in-order traversal of a binary search tree outputs the values in ascending order.

6. Subprograms, Parameters and Scope |

Subprograms divide a program into named, reusable blocks. A procedure performs an action and may not return a value; a function returns exactly one value and can therefore be used inside an expression. Their benefits are the standard exam favourites: reuse of code, easier testing of isolated modules, easier maintenance, reduced duplication, and better readability through meaningful names.

Parameters pass data into a subprogram. Passing by value copies the data, so changes inside the subprogram do not affect the caller's variable. Passing by reference passes the address, so the original variable can be modified. This distinction matters whenever a question asks you to swap two values or update a running total inside a procedure.

Scope describes where a variable can be seen. Local variables exist only inside their subprogram, are created on entry and destroyed on exit, which prevents accidental interference between modules. Global variables are visible throughout the program and should be used sparingly, for constants or genuinely shared state. Interface describes how a subprogram is called: its name, parameters and return type, hidden from the caller's view of the internal logic.

FUNCTION Area(width, height) RETURNS REAL → RETURN width × height

7. Recursion | 递归

Recursion is a technique in which a subprogram calls itself to solve a smaller version of the same problem. Every recursive solution needs a base case that stops the recursion and a general case that moves towards the base case. Without a base case, or if the general case does not progress, the program will exhaust the call stack and crash.

Classic examples to practise are the factorial function, the Fibonacci sequence, the greatest common divisor using Euclid's algorithm, and binary search over a sorted array. You should be able to rewrite each one iteratively and explain the trade-off: recursion is often shorter and mirrors the mathematical definition, while iteration avoids the memory overhead of stack frames and may be faster.

n! = 1 if n = 0 or 1; n! = n × (n − 1)! otherwise

When a recursive call is traced, draw the call stack level by level. Each active call keeps its own copies of parameters and local variables, which is why a naïve Fibonacci function recalculates the same values many times and has time complexity far worse than the iterative version. Tail recursion, where the recursive call is the final action, can be optimised by a compiler into a loop and therefore uses constant stack space.

8. Object-Oriented Design |

Object-oriented programming models a system as interacting objects. A class is the blueprint defining attributes (data) and methods (behaviour); an object is an instance of a class created at run time. In Edexcel project work you are expected to justify your class design, so learn the vocabulary precisely and apply it to your own scenario.

Encapsulation means keeping attributes private and exposing only the methods that are needed, such as getMark() and setMark(). It protects data from invalid states and lets you change internal implementation without breaking other code. Inheritance lets a subclass reuse and extend a superclass, for example Student and Teacher both inheriting from Person, which reduces duplication and expresses an "is-a" relationship.

Polymorphism allows the same method call to behave differently depending on the object's class. Method overriding replaces a superclass method with a subclass version, while overloading defines several methods with the same name but different parameter lists. An abstract class cannot be instantiated and typically defines a common interface, whereas an interface declares method signatures with no implementation, allowing unrelated classes to be used interchangeably.

In written answers, a UML class diagram should show the class name, its attributes with data types, and its methods with parameters and return types, together with the correct relationship notation: composition (a part cannot exist without the whole), aggregation (a part can exist independently), and inheritance (an open-headed arrow pointing to the superclass).

9. File Handling and Data Persistence |

Files allow data to persist after the program closes. The standard sequence is open, process (read, write or append), then close. Always close a file, because buffered data may not be written to disk until the file is closed and a locked file will not be available to other programs.

Text files store human-readable characters and are ideal for configuration and CSV data; each line usually ends with a newline character. Binary files store data in the machine's internal representation, which is more compact and faster but not readable in a plain text editor, and they depend on how the data was originally written. When storing records, choose a delimiter that cannot appear in the data, such as a comma or tab, and validate on reading.

Common exam tasks include appending a new record, searching a file line by line for a matching key, counting records, and calculating an average from values read from a file. A robust program handles the case where the file does not exist, the file is empty, or a line is corrupted, rather than assuming perfect input.

OPEN "scores.txt" FOR APPEND → WRITELINE record → CLOSE "scores.txt"

10. Testing, Debugging, Validation and Verification |

Testing is the systematic process of finding errors; debugging is the process of locating, diagnosing and fixing them. Examiners expect accurate error categories: a syntax error breaks the grammar and prevents compilation or interpretation; a logic error produces the wrong output while the program still runs; a runtime error crashes the program at execution, such as division by zero or an array index out of range.

Test data should be chosen deliberately. Normal data lies within the expected range, boundary data sits exactly on the limits (for example 0, 1, 100 and 101 for a mark between 0 and 100), erroneous data is of the wrong type or format, and extreme data is the largest or smallest value the system must survive. Each test should state the input, the expected output, the actual output and the action taken.

Validation checks that data is reasonable and follows the rules, using range checks, type checks, length checks, presence checks, format checks and check digits. Verification checks that data has been copied accurately, for example by double entry or by asking the user to confirm the value. Validation cannot guarantee that the data is true; verification cannot guarantee that it is sensible - the two are complementary, not interchangeable.

Testing levels matter too: unit testing of an individual subprogram, integration testing of modules joined together, system testing of the whole solution against the requirements, and acceptance testing by the end user. Black-box testing considers only inputs and outputs, while white-box testing examines the internal paths and decisions of the code.

11. Algorithm Efficiency and Complexity |

Efficiency answers two questions: how the running time grows as the input size n grows, and how much memory is required. Time complexity is usually expressed in Big-O notation, which describes the worst-case growth rate and ignores constant factors and lower-order terms.
