📚 Explaining Electromagnetic Induction |

Electromagnetic induction is the production of an electromotive force across a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic flux. This phenomenon links electricity and magnetism and underpins generators, transformers, induction cookers and many sensing devices.

1. Magnetic Flux and Flux Linkage |

= B A cos θ, where θ is the angle between the field direction and the normal to the area.

he key idea is that only the component of B perpendicular to the area contributes to the flux.

N cos θ. The SI unit of flux is the weber, so magnetic flux density is given in tesla or Wb m⁻².

Φ = B A cos θ

2. Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction |

Faraday' x linkage. For N turns, the induced emf is ε = -d(NΦ)/dt; the negative sign expresses Lenz's law.

Δt. A larger flux change, a shorter time, or more turns all produce a greater induced emf.

Faraday's law indicates that induction depends not on the amount of flux present, but on how quickly that flux changes. A constant flux gives no induced emf.

ε = -Δ(NΦ)/Δt

3. Lenz's Law and Energy Conservation |

Lenz's law states that the induced current flows in a direction that opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. This is why the induced emf carries a negative sign in Faraday's law.

For example, when the north pole of a magnet approaches a coil, the coil face nearest the magnet becomes a north pole to repel the approaching magnet. If the magnet is withdrawn, the coil face becomes a south pole to attract it.

This opposition is required by energy conservation. If the induced current assisted the change, a small movement would produce extra electrical energy without mechanical input, which is impossible.

4. Induced EMF in a Moving Conductor |

erpendicular to a magnetic field B cuts field lines and develops an induced emf ε = B L v.

v sin θ. A conductor moving parallel to the field cuts no field lines and gives zero emf.

This motional emf can be derived from the magnetic force on charge carriers, where electrons accumulate at one end until the electric force balances the magnetic force.

ε = B L v sin θ

5. Generators and Alternating EMF |

Starting from maximum flux, Φ = B A N cos(ωt), and the induced emf is ε = B A N ω sin(ωt).

从磁通最大位置开始,Φ = B A N cos(ωt),感应电动势为 ε = B A N ω sin(ωt)。

The output alternates because flux linkage increases and decreases in opposite senses every half-cycle.

An alternating current generator uses slip rings to maintain continuous electrical contact; a split-ring commutator in a d.c. generator reverses the connection every half-cycle to give a direct output. The r.m.s. emf for a sinusoidal output is ε₀/√2.

ε = B A N ω sin(ωt)

6. Transformers and Mutual Induction |

A transformer consists of two coils wound on a shared soft-iron core. An alternating current in the primary coil creates a changing flux in the core, which links the secondary coil and induces an alternating emf.

For an ideal transformer with no energy loss, the emf ratio equals the turns ratio: Vs / Vp = Ns / Np. Since input power equals output power, Vp Ip = Vs Is, and therefore Is / Ip = Np / Ns.

由于输入功率等于输出功率,Vp Ip = Vs Is,因此 Is / Ip = Np / Ns。

Step-up transformers increase voltage and decrease current, which reduces I²R heating losses in long-distance power transmission. Step-down transformers make high voltages safe for domestic use.

Vs / Vp = Ns / Np

7. Eddy Currents and Damping |

When a solid metal plate moves through a magnetic field or experiences a changing flux, circulating currents called eddy currents are induced inside the metal. By Lenz's law these currents oppose the relative motion and cause magnetic braking.

Eddy currents are useful in induction heating, electromagnetic damping in moving-coil meters and balances, and metal detectors. They are reduced in transformer cores by laminating the core, which restricts circulating current paths.

In an induction cooker, a rapidly changing magnetic field induces eddy currents in an iron pan, heating it directly by resistive heating.

8. Self-Induction and Inductance |

poses the current change. The induced emf is ε = -L dI/dt, where L is the self-inductance.
