📚 Lattice Energy |
Lattice energy is one of the most important thermodynamic concepts in A-Level chemistry. It connects ionic bonding, periodicity, energetics and solubility into a single story: why ionic solids are hard and high-melting, why some salts dissolve easily while others barely dissolve at all, and why a small doubly charged ion pair such as Mg²⁺/O²⁻ produces one of the most stable crystals known. This article covers the definition, the sign conventions, Born-Haber cycles, the factors that control the magnitude of lattice energy, the theoretical models behind it, and the way it links to melting point and solubility.
1. What is Lattice Energy? |
Lattice energy (more precisely, the lattice enthalpy of formation) is the enthalpy change when one mole of an ionic solid is formed from its gaseous ions under standard conditions. Because oppositely charged ions attract each other strongly, energy is always released, so the value is always negative. A more negative value means stronger ionic bonding and a more stable lattice.
Na⁺(g) + Cl⁻(g) → NaCl(s) ΔH°lat = -787 kJ mol⁻¹
Notice the state symbols: the ions must be gaseous and completely separated, and the product must be exactly one mole of solid. Any other set of states gives a different quantity and loses marks in the exam.
The strong electrostatic attraction in the lattice explains why ionic compounds have high melting points, are hard and brittle, and are usually soluble in polar solvents such as water.
2. Lattice Formation vs Lattice Dissociation |
Two definitions appear in textbooks, and confusing them is the single most common source of sign errors. The lattice enthalpy of formation starts from gaseous ions and ends at the solid, so it is exothermic and negative. The lattice enthalpy of dissociation (also called the lattice enthalpy of breaking) does the exact opposite: it separates one mole of solid into gaseous ions, so it is endothermic and positive.
| Quantity | 物理量 | Process | 过程 | Sign for NaCl | NaCl 的符号 |
| Lattice enthalpy of formation | 晶格生成焓 | Na⁺(g) + Cl⁻(g) → NaCl(s) | -787 kJ mol⁻¹ |
| Lattice enthalpy of dissociation | 晶格解离焓 | NaCl(s) → Na⁺(g) + Cl⁻(g) | +787 kJ mol⁻¹ |
The two values have the same magnitude but opposite signs, because one is simply the reverse of the other. When you use Hess's law, always check which direction the arrows point before you add or subtract a number.
Exam boards are not fully consistent: some use "lattice enthalpy" to mean the exothermic formation value, others use "lattice energy" to mean the endothermic dissociation value. Read the definition given in the question paper and follow it.
3. Born-Haber Cycles | Born-Haber 循环
Lattice energy cannot be measured directly in a calorimeter, because it is impossible to prepare a bottle of separated gaseous ions. Instead we use a Born-Haber cycle, which is simply Hess's law applied to ionic solids. The cycle links the standard enthalpy of formation of the solid to the lattice enthalpy through a series of measurable steps.
The standard steps, starting from the elements in their standard states, are:
- Atomisation (or sublimation) of the metal: M(s) → M(g), endothermic.
- of the metal: M(g) → M⁺(g) + e⁻, endothermic. A second ionisation is needed for a 2+ ion.
- Atomisation of the non-metal: ½X₂(g) → X(g), endothermic.
- n affinity of the non-metal: X(g) + e⁻ → X⁻(g), usually exothermic for the first electron.
- Formation of the solid: M(s) + ½X₂(g) → MX(s), ΔH°f, usually exothermic.
By Hess's law, the sum of the endothermic and exothermic steps around the cycle must be zero, so the lattice enthalpy is found by subtraction.
ΔH°lat = ΔH°f - (ΔH°at + IE + ΔH°at + EA)
4. Worked Example: Sodium Chloride |
Constructing a Born-Haber cycle for NaCl is a standard exam question. The data below are the values normally quoted, and they should be used with the state symbols exactly as written.
| Formation | 生成 | Na(s) + ½Cl₂(g) → NaCl(s) | -411 |
| Atomisation of Na | Na 原子化 | Na(s) → Na(g) | +108 |
| First ionisation | 第一电离能 | Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ | +496 |
| Atomisation of Cl | Cl 原子化 | ½Cl₂(g) → Cl(g) | +122 |
| First electron affinity | 第一电子亲和能 | Cl(g) + e⁻ → Cl⁻(g) | -349 |
formation is therefore -411 - 377 = -788 kJ mol⁻¹, conventionally quoted as -787 kJ mol⁻¹.
Note the atomisation of chlorine is half the Cl-Cl bond enthalpy, because the equation is written per mole of NaCl and therefore needs only half a mole of Cl₂. This is a favourite trap in multiple-choice questions.
5. Worked Example: Magnesium Oxide |
Magnesium oxide shows why charge matters so much. Two extra complications appear: magnesium needs two ionisation energies, and oxygen needs a second electron affinity, which is strongly endothermic because a negative electron is being forced onto an already negative O⁻ ion.
| Formation | 生成 | Mg(s) + ½O₂(g) → MgO(s) | -602 |
| Atomisation of Mg | Mg 原子化 | Mg(s) → Mg(g) | +148 |
| First ionisation | 第一电离能 | Mg(g) → Mg⁺(g) + e⁻ | +738 |
| Second ionisation | 第二电离能 | Mg⁺(g) → Mg²⁺(g) + e⁻ | +1451 |
| Atomisation of O | O 原子化 | ½O₂(g) → O(g) | +249 |
| First electron affinity | 第一电子亲和能 | O(g) + e⁻ → O⁻(g) | -141 |
| Second electron affinity | 第二电子亲和能 | O⁻(g) + e⁻ → O²⁻(g) | +798 |
often quoted as about -3850 kJ mol⁻¹. That is roughly five times more negative than NaCl.
MgO remains thermodynamically stable even though getting two electrons onto oxygen is very unfavourable, because the enormous lattice enthalpy released more than compensates. This is the classic illustration of the ionic model working in favour of 2+/2- compounds.
6. Factors Affecting Lattice Energy |
Only two factors control the size of the lattice energy: the magnitude of the ionic charges and the distance between the ion centres. Coulomb's law gives the force between two point charges, and it shows that the attraction rises with the product of the charges and falls with the square of the distance.
F = (q₁ × q₂) ÷ (4πε₀ × r²) and ΔH°lat ∝ (z⁺ × z⁻) ÷ (r⁺ + r⁻)
- Higher charge on either ion: the charge product z⁺z⁻ increases, attraction increases, lattice energy becomes more negative. Going from 1+/1- to 2+/2- multiplies the charge product by four.
- Smaller ionic radius: the ions can approach more closely, r decreases, attraction increases, lattice energy becomes more negative.
Charge usually dominates, because it enters as a product and is squared in the comparison 2/1 versus 1/1. Compare NaF (-918 kJ mol⁻¹) with MgO (-3850 kJ mol⁻¹): fluoride and oxide are similar in size, but the 2+/2- charge product makes MgO far more strongly bonded.
比较 NaF(-918 kJ mol⁻¹)与 MgO(-3850 kJ mol⁻¹):氟离子与氧离子半径相近,但 2+/2- 的电荷乘积使 MgO 的键合强度远高于 NaF。
7. Theoretical Models: Born-Landé and Kapustinskii | 理论模型:Born-Landé 与 Kapustinskii
The Born-Landé equation calculates lattice energy from the geometry of the crystal lattice, Coulombic attraction between all ion pairs, and a short-range repulsion term that prevents the ions from collapsing into each other.
U = -(NA × M × z⁺ × z⁻ × e²) ÷ (4πε₀ × r₀) × (1 - 1 ÷ n)
Here NA is Avogadro's constant, M is the Madelung constant (which depends on the lattice type), e is the elementary charge, r₀ is the equilibrium interionic distance and n is the Born exponent related to the electron configuration. The Kapustinskii equation is a simplified version that needs only the ionic radii and charges, which makes it useful for estimating lattice energies of unfamiliar compounds.
Theoretical values are often slightly more negative than experimental ones, because the hard-sphere ionic model ignores covalent character, polarisation of large anions by small highly charged cations, and the zero-point vibrational energy of the lattice.
This is exactly why the Born-Haber value is regarded as the experimental value: it is obtained from measurable quantities using Hess's law, so it automatically includes all real effects.
8. Lattice Energy and Melting Point |
Melting breaks the ionic lattice, so it must overcome the same electrostatic forces that the lattice energy measures. As a rough rule, the more negative the lattice energy, the higher the melting point.
