📚 Measuring Enthalpy Changes: Calorimetry and Calculations |
In A-Level Chemistry, measuring enthalpy changes is one of the core practical skills. It links the theoretical idea of energy transfer in chemical reactions to simple laboratory data such as temperature change, mass, and specific heat capacity. This guide covers the definitions you must know, the apparatus and method used in school calorimetry, the calculations that carry most of the marks, and the error analysis that examiners expect to see.
1. What Is Enthalpy and Enthalpy Change? |
Enthalpy, H, is the total heat content of a chemical system at constant pressure. In practice, we cannot measure absolute H, but we can measure the heat change when a reaction occurs under constant pressure, called the enthalpy change, ΔH.
The symbol ΔH is expressed in kilojoules per mole, kJ mol⁻¹. A negative ΔH means heat is released to the surroundings; a positive ΔH means heat is absorbed from the surroundings. The magnitude of ΔH tells you how much energy is transferred per mole of reaction as written, so the value always depends on the balanced equation and on the physical states of the species involved.
Energy changes in a calorimetry experiment are measured in joules, while molar enthalpy changes are quoted in kJ mol⁻¹. You must therefore divide by 1000 at some point in almost every calculation, and forgetting this factor is one of the most frequently penalised mistakes in practical papers.
2. Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions |
An exothermic reaction transfers thermal energy from the system to the surroundings, so the surroundings get hotter and ΔH is negative. Combustion, neutralisation, and displacement of a less reactive metal by a more reactive metal are common examples.
An endothermic reaction absorbs thermal energy from the surroundings, so the surroundings get colder and ΔH is positive. Dissolving ammonium nitrate, thermal decomposition of carbonates, and some salt dissolutions are typical examples. Photosynthesis is a familiar biological example of an endothermic process.
At the molecular level, bond breaking is always endothermic and bond making is always exothermic. Whether a reaction is overall exothermic or endothermic depends on the balance between the energy needed to break bonds in the reactants and the energy released when new bonds form in the products.
3. Standard Conditions and Standard Enthalpy Changes |
Enthalpy changes vary with temperature, pressure, and concentration, so chemists define standard conditions to make values comparable. Standard conditions are a pressure of 100 kPa (1 bar), a stated temperature usually 298 K (25 °C), and a concentration of 1 mol dm⁻³ for species in aqueous solution. A value measured under these conditions carries the superscript symbol, for example ΔH°.
You should be able to define the standard enthalpy changes listed in the table below and recognise the sign convention attached to each one.
| Quantity | Definition | Sign for common cases |
| ΔH°f (formation) | Enthalpy change when 1 mol of a compound forms from its elements in their standard states | Usually negative |
| ΔH°c (combustion) | Enthalpy change when 1 mol of a substance burns completely in excess oxygen | Always negative |
| ΔH°neut (neutralisation) | Enthalpy change when 1 mol of water forms from H⁺ and OH⁻ in dilute solution | About −57 kJ mol⁻¹ for strong acid plus strong base |
| ΔH°sol (solution) | Enthalpy change when 1 mol of a substance dissolves to infinite dilution | May be positive or negative |
| ΔH°r (reaction) | Enthalpy change for the equation as written | Depends on the reaction |
g) = 0 kJ mol⁻¹. This convention is essential when you apply Hess cycles later in the course.
4. The Core Calorimetry Equation |
All school calorimetry rests on one equation that links the heat transferred to the temperature change of a known mass of material. If the substance absorbing or releasing the heat has a known specific heat capacity, the heat energy can be calculated directly.
q = m × c × ΔT
In this equation q is the heat energy transferred in joules, m is the mass of the substance being heated or cooled in grams, c is the specific heat capacity in J g⁻¹ K⁻¹, and ΔT is the temperature change in K or in °C. Because a change of 1 °C equals a change of 1 K, the two units are interchangeable for temperature differences.
aken as the total mass of the solution, which for dilute aqueous solutions can be approximated as the total volume in cm³, because the density of water is about 1.00 g cm⁻³.
e C is the heat capacity of the whole calorimeter in J K⁻¹. This form appears in more advanced practical questions and in any experiment using a metal can or a bomb calorimeter.
5. Simple Calorimetry: Reactions in Solution |
The standard school method uses a polystyrene cup as the calorimeter, because polystyrene is a good thermal insulator and the cup is cheap and easy to handle. A typical procedure for a displacement or neutralisation reaction is summarised below.
- Measure a known volume of one reactant solution with a measuring cylinder or pipette and place it in the polystyrene cup. |
- Measure the same volume of the second solution in a separate container and record its initial temperature. |
- Record the initial temperature of the first solution and, if possible, the temperature every 30 s for 2 minutes so a pre-mix baseline is obtained. |
- Add the second solution quickly, stir continuously with the thermometer, and record the maximum temperature reached. |
- Calculate ΔT as the maximum temperature minus the average initial temperature of the two solutions.
ises by about 13.5 °C. Using m = 50.0 g gives q = 50.0 × 4.18 × 13.5 = 2822 J, and n(H₂O) = 0.0500 mol, so ΔH = −2822 ÷ 0.0500 ÷ 1000 = −56.4 kJ mol⁻¹, close to the accepted value of about −57.1 kJ mol⁻¹.
Note that for strong acids and strong bases the value is essentially constant, because the reaction is always the same ionic process. For a weak acid or weak base, part of the measured enthalpy change is used to ionise the weak acid or base, so the numerical value of ΔH°neut becomes less negative.
6. Measuring the Enthalpy of Combustion |
For combustion, the substance itself is burned and the heat is transferred to a known mass of water. A typical spirit burner setup uses a copper can because copper conducts heat well, with a draught shield to reduce heat loss and a thermometer or digital probe to follow the temperature rise.
- Weigh the burner before and after burning to find the mass of fuel used.
- Measure a fixed volume of water into the copper can, for example 200 cm³, so the water mass is known.
- Record the initial water temperature, light the burner, stir the water gently, and record the maximum temperature. |
- Calculate q = m × c × ΔT using the mass of water and c = 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹.
- fuel burned from n = mass ÷ M, then divide q by n and by 1000 to obtain ΔH°c in kJ mol⁻¹.
are 0.500 ÷ 32.0 = 0.0156 mol, so ΔH°c = −7524 ÷ 0.0156 ÷ 1000 = −482 kJ mol⁻¹. The data book value is about −726 kJ mol⁻¹, so the experimental value is far too small in magnitude because of heat losses and incomplete combustion.
7. Step-by-Step Calculation Routine |
Almost every enthalpy calculation in an exam follows the same five-step routine. Practising this sequence until it is automatic is the single most effective way to secure the calculation marks.
- Step 1: Find ΔT from the temperature data, using the maximum or extrapolated temperature.
- Step 2: Compute q = m × c × ΔT, keeping everything in joules.
- Step 3: Work out the number of moles of the limiting reactant, or of water formed, or of fuel burned. |
- Step 4: Divide q by n to obtain the enthalpy change per mole, in J mol⁻¹.
- Step 5: Convert to kJ mol⁻¹ by dividing by 1000 and attach the correct sign.
Two sign conventions must be applied carefully. If the temperature rises, the reaction is exothermic and the final answer must be negative. If the temperature falls, the reaction is endothermic and the answer must be positive. Many marks are lost simply by quoting a negative value for an endothermic dissolution such as ammonium nitrate in water.
ΔH = − (m × c × ΔT) ÷ (1000 × n)
This combined form is convenient in timed conditions, but you should still show each stage of working so that method marks can be awarded even if an arithmetic slip occurs.
8. Sources of Error in Calorimetry |
School calorimetry is crude, and the measured value is almost always smaller in magnitude than the data book value for exothermic reactions. Examiners expect you to identify the physical reasons rather than to blame the apparatus vaguely.
| Error | Effect on result | Improvement |
| Heat lost to surroundings | Measured ΔT too small, magnitude of ΔH too small | Use a lid, insulation, draught shield, or a vacuum flask |
| Heat absorbed by the calorimeter | Measured ΔT too small | Use q = CΔT with a calibrated heat capacity |
| Incomplete combustion of fuel | Less energy released than expected | Burn in excess oxygen; use a bomb calorimeter |
| Evaporation of fuel or water | Mass of fuel overestimated, energy loss | Use a lid; weigh quickly; keep the burner cool before weighing |
| Non-standard conditions | Value not truly a standard value | Correct to 298 K and 100 kPa where relevant |
| Assumption that c = 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹ for all solutions | Small systematic error | Use the actual specific heat capacity of the solution |
Another important point is that a polystyrene cup cannot be used for combustion experiments, because it would melt. Conversely, a metal can is unsuitable for acid-base reactions because the acid would react with the metal.
9. Improving Accuracy: Extrapolation and Calibration |
The most elegant improvement is the graphical extrapolation method. Temperatures are recorded every 30 s before mixing, then every 30 s after mixing. The pre-mix points form a baseline, and the post-mix cooling points form a falling line that is extrapolated back to the time of mixing. The vertical difference at that point gives a corrected ΔT that removes the effect of heat loss during the experiment.
Thermometers should be read to the nearest 0.1 °C or better, and the same thermometer should ideally be used throughout to avoid calibration differences. A digital temperature probe with a data logger improves both precision and the number of readings available.
f combustion is accurately known. The same apparatus is then used for the unknown sample, so the relationship q = C × ΔT can be applied with confidence.
10. Linking Calorimetry to Hess's Law and Bond Enthalpies |
Calorimetry gives direct experimental values, but many enthalpy changes cannot be measured directly, for example the enthalpy of formation of an unstable compound. Hess's law states that the total enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the route taken, which allows indirect determination using cycles.
For a formation cycle, the standard enthalpy of reaction can be found from formation data using the relationship below. Remember to multiply each value by its stoichiometric coefficient.
ΔH°r = Σ ΔH°f(products) − Σ ΔH°f(reactants)
A parallel relationship exists for mean bond enthalpies, where the energy needed to break bonds in the reactants is subtracted from the energy released in forming bonds in the products.
ΔH°r = Σ (bond enthalpies broken) − Σ (bond enthalpies formed)
Values calculated from mean bond enthalpies are only approximate, because a mean bond enthalpy averages the same bond in many different compounds. If a question asks why the calculated value differs from the data book value, the answer usually involves the fact that mean bond enthalpies are averages and do not apply to a specific molecule.
11. Practical Skills and Safety |
Practical assessment rewards correct technique as much as correct arithmetic. Make sure you can describe how each piece of apparatus is used and why it was chosen.
- Use a burette or pipette for accurate volumes in neutralisation experiments rather than a beaker. |
- Stir continuously but gently so the temperature is uniform and the thermometer does not break. |
- Wear eye protection, especially with acids, alkalis, and flammable fuels such as methanol or ethanol. |
- Keep flames away from volatile fuels and never refill a hot spirit burner. |
- Record all readings to the precision of the instrument and quote the final answer to a sensible number of significant figures, usually three.
Always comment on the direction of the error. Saying "the value is too small because heat is lost" is only half a mark; linking it to a smaller measured ΔT and therefore a smaller calculated enthalpy change is what earns full credit.
12. Exam-Style Questions and Common Pitfalls |
The most common question format gives you a table of mass, temperature data, and molar mass, and asks for a five-mark calculation followed by a three-mark error discussion. Read the command words carefully: "calculate" needs working, "explain" needs a causal chain, and "s
