📚 Bonding and Physical Properties |
Bonding between atoms, ions and molecules determines the macroscopic physical properties of a material, such as stiffness, melting point, electrical conductivity and brittleness. In A-Level Physics, a solid is not simply a rigid block; it is a collection of particles held together by electrostatic forces. Understanding the type of bonding allows us to predict and explain how a material behaves under load, heat and electric fields. This article builds a bridge from the microscopic picture of particles and forces to the measurable quantities you meet in the practical and theory papers: melting temperature, Young modulus, resistivity, ductility and fracture.

1. Types of Bonding in Solids |
In solid materials, physical properties such as melting point, stiffness, electrical conductivity and brittleness are determined by the type of bonding between atoms, ions or molecules. The four main categories are ionic, covalent network, metallic and molecular. In A-Level Physics, these categories are used to explain how materials behave under stress, respond to temperature changes and conduct electricity.
The bonding type can be distinguished by the nature of the electrostatic forces and by whether electrons are transferred, shared or delocalised. Ionic bonds arise from electron transfer, covalent bonds from sharing of electron pairs, metallic bonds from delocalised electrons, and molecular solids from weak intermolecular attractions. A useful first question when you meet an unfamiliar material is therefore: where are the electrons, and how strong is the force holding the particles in place?
| Bonding type | Typical physical properties | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Covalent network 共价网络 | Very high melting point, very hard, often insulator or anisotropic conductor 极高熔点、极硬,通常为绝缘体或各向异性导体 | Diamond, graphite, SiO₂ 金刚石、石墨、二氧化硅 |
| Metallic 金属键 | High melting point (varies widely), malleable, ductile, good electrical and thermal conductor 高熔点(差异很大)、可锻、延展性好、电与热的良导体 | Cu, Fe, Al, Na 铜、铁、铝、钠 |
2. Ionic Bonding and the Ionic Lattice |
In an ionic solid, electrons have been transferred completely from a metal to a non-metal, producing positive and negative ions. Each ion is surrounded by ions of opposite charge in a regular three-dimensional lattice, so the structure is held together by the electrostatic attraction between all neighbouring charges. There are no free electrons and no separate molecules: the whole crystal is effectively one giant entity, and the formula unit such as NaCl simply records the ratio of ions.
ured by the lattice enthalpy, which increases with the size of the ionic charges and decreases as the ions get larger, because the centres of charge are then further apart. The attractive force follows an inverse-square law, F ∝ r², so doubling the charge quadruples the force while doubling the separation quarters it.
F ∝ (q₁ × q₂) ÷ r²
This explains why MgO melts at about 2852 °C while NaCl melts at about 801 °C: the 2⁺ and 2⁻ charges in MgO produce a far stronger lattice than the 1⁺ and 1⁻ charges in NaCl, and the ions are also smaller. In exam answers, always link "high melting point" to "strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions throughout the giant lattice", not to the mass or size of the ions alone.
3. Covalent Network Solids |
In a covalent network solid, every atom is joined to its neighbours by strong directional covalent bonds, and this pattern extends throughout the whole crystal. Diamond is the classic example: each carbon atom forms four single bonds in a tetrahedral arrangement, giving a rigid, three-dimensional framework with a very high melting point of about 3550 °C and extreme hardness. Because the valence electrons are locked into localised bonds, diamond does not conduct electricity.
Silicon dioxide, SiO₂, behaves in the same way, with each silicon atom bonded to four oxygen atoms and each oxygen bonded to two silicon atoms. Its melting point of about 1710 °C is lower than diamond's because the Si–O bonds are slightly weaker than C–C bonds, but it is still classed as a very high melting point solid and is used as a refractory material.
Graphite shows that a covalent network need not be three-dimensional. Each carbon atom bonds to three others in a hexagonal layer, using only three of its four valence electrons, and the fourth electron is delocalised within the layer. The layers are held together only by weak forces, so graphite is soft and slippery, and it conducts electricity along the layers while behaving much more like an insulator perpendicular to them.
Two consequences follow directly from this structure and are frequently examined: graphite has a much lower density than diamond because the layers are widely spaced, and graphite is used as a lubricant and as an electrode precisely because of the weak interlayer forces and the delocalised electrons.
4. Metallic Bonding and Delocalised Electrons |
In a metal, the atoms release their outer electrons into a shared "sea" of delocalised electrons, leaving a lattice of positive ions. The metallic bond is the electrostatic attraction between this electron sea and the positive ion cores. Because the attraction is non-directional, one ion can be replaced by another of similar size without destroying the structure, and this is the microscopic origin of the characteristic properties of metals.
Melting points of metals vary enormously, from about 98 °C for sodium to about 3410 °C for tungsten, because the strength of the metallic bond depends on the charge of the ion core and on the number of delocalised electrons per atom. Moving across Period 3 from sodium to aluminium, the ion charge rises from 1⁺ to 3⁺ and the number of delocalised electrons per atom rises from one to three, so the melting points increase steadily: Na 98 °C, Mg 650 °C, Al 660 °C.
- Malleable and ductile: layers of ions can slide over one another while the electron sea continues to hold them together.
- Good electrical conductor: delocalised electrons accelerate in an applied electric field and drift through the lattice.
- Good thermal conductor: free electrons transfer kinetic energy rapidly from hot to cold regions.
- Shiny appearance: delocalised electrons absorb and re-emit photons across a wide range of frequencies.
5. Simple Molecular Solids and Intermolecular Forces |
In a simple molecular solid, the strong covalent bonds exist only inside each molecule, while the molecules themselves are held to one another by weak intermolecular forces such as London dispersion forces, permanent dipole-dipole attraction and hydrogen bonding. Melting and boiling therefore break the weak forces between molecules rather than the strong bonds within them, which is why these solids have low melting points and are soft and easily compressed.
Iodine is a good illustration: the I–I covalent bond is strong, but the forces between I₂ molecules are weak, so solid iodine melts at only 114 °C and sublimes readily. Carbon dioxide melts at about −57 °C at high pressure and sublimes at −78.5 °C at atmospheric pressure, and methane melts at −182 °C. None of these materials conducts electricity in any state, because there are no free charges and no ions.
The strength of the intermolecular force increases with the number of electrons in the molecule, because a larger, more polarisable electron cloud produces a larger instantaneous dipole. This is why the melting points of the halogens rise down the group: fluorine −220 °C, chlorine −101 °C, bromine −7 °C, iodine 114 °C.
6. Melting Point and Bond Strength |
Melting occurs when the thermal energy of the particles becomes comparable with the energy holding them in the lattice, so the particles can break free from their fixed positions and flow. The macroscopic melting point is therefore a direct probe of microscopic bond strength: the stronger the bonding throughout the structure, the higher the temperature needed to overcome it.
| Material | Bonding / force broken on melting | Melting point |
|---|---|---|
| I₂ 碘 | Weak dispersion forces between molecules 分子间微弱色散力 | ≈ 114 °C |
Notice that the melting point is determined by the type of interaction that must be broken, not by the strength of the bonds inside a molecule or ion. A common error is to claim that iodine has a low melting point because the I–I bond is weak; in fact the I–I bond is strong, and it is the intermolecular force that is weak.
7. Stiffness, Young Modulus and Bond Stiffness |
Stiffness describes how strongly a material resists elastic deformation and is quantified by the Young modulus, defined as tensile stress divided by tensile strain. At the microscopic level, the Young modulus is a measure of how steeply the interatomic force-displacement curve rises near the equilibrium separation: stiff materials have deep, narrow potential wells, whereas compliant materials have shallow, broad wells.
E = stress ÷ strain = (F ÷ A) ÷ (ΔL ÷ L₀)
out 2.1 × 10¹¹ Pa; copper about 1.3 × 10¹¹ Pa; and a rubber band may be as low as 1 × 10⁶ Pa because its polymer chains are held by weak forces and can uncoil easily.
An important distinction for the exam is that stiffness and strength are different properties. A material can be stiff but weak, such as glass, or compliant but strong, such as a nylon rope. Stiffness relates to the gradient of the stress-strain graph in its linear region; strength relates to the maximum stress the material can withstand before fracture.
8. Electrical Conductivity and Charge Carriers |
Whether a solid conducts electricity depends entirely on whether it contains mobile charge carriers. Delocalised electrons conduct in metals and in graphite; ions conduct only when an ionic solid is molten or dissolved, because the lattice must be broken for the ions to move; and simple molecular solids never conduct, because they contain neither free electrons nor mobile ions.
| Material | Charge carrier | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|
| Graphite (in layer) 石墨(层内) | Delocalised electrons 离域电子 | ≈ 3 × 10⁵ S m⁻¹ |
| Molten NaCl 熔融氯化钠 | Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions 钠离子与氯离子 | ≈ 4 × 10² S m⁻¹ |
In metals, the drift velocity of electrons is limited by collisions with the vibrating ion cores, so resistivity rises with temperature: ρ increases approximately in proportion to absolute temperature for a pure metal above about 100 K. This is the opposite of the behaviour of a semiconductor such as silicon, whose resistivity falls as temperature rises because more electrons are promoted into the conduction band.
9. Brittleness, Ductility and Dislocation Motion |
Brittleness and ductility describe how a material responds to stress beyond its elastic limit. A brittle material fractures with little or no plastic deformation because slip cannot occur: in an ionic crystal, sliding one plane of ions relative to another brings ions of like charge into contact, and the resulting repulsion splits the crystal along a cleavage plane. That is why a sodium chloride crystal is hard but shatters when struck.
Metals are ductile because slip is easy: the non-directional metallic bond is maintained even after planes of ions slide, because the electron sea simply redistributes. Real metals deform by the movement of dislocations, which are line defects that allow atoms to slip one plane at a time. Dislocation motion explains why pure annealed copper can be drawn into wire with a strain of over 40 % before failure.
- Work hardening: dislocation tangling increases the stress needed for further slip, so the metal becomes stronger but more brittle.
- Alloying: solute atoms pin dislocations, which is why bronze and steel are harder than their pure constituents.
- Covalent network solids are brittle because their directional bonds must break outright rather than slide.
10. Thermal Expansion and Anisotropy |
When a solid is heated, the atoms vibrate with larger amplitude about their equilibrium positions. Because the interatomic potential well is asymmetric and flattens more at large separations, the average separation increases, so the material expands. The linear expansivity α is defined by the fractional change in length per kelvin.
ΔL = α × L₀ × ΔT
tion. Typical values are about 1 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ for diamond, 1.2 × 10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ for steel and 2.3 × 10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ for aluminium. This mismatch matters in engineering: bimetallic strips bend because the two metals expand by different amounts.
Anisotropy arises when bond strength differs along different directions. Graphite conducts electricity and heat readily within its layers but poorly across them, and it also shows different expansivities parallel and perpendicular to the layers. Diamond, with its uniform tetrahedral network, is isotropic. When a question asks you to explain anisotropy, always refer to the directional nature of the bonding and the resulting difference in force constant along each axis.
11. Stress-Strain Behaviour and Failure |
The stress-strain graph links the microscopic picture to measurable engineering behaviour. In the elastic region the bonds stretch reversibly and the graph is linear, with gradient equal to the Young modulus. The elastic limit marks the onset of permanent deformation; the ultimate tensile strength is the maximum stress reached; and the breaking stress is the stress at fracture.
