📚 Orbitals and the Periodic Table |
Understanding atomic orbitals is central to explaining electron arrangement and the structure of the Periodic Table. At Cambridge A-level Chemistry, you need to connect orbital energies, electron configurations and periodic trends rather than simply memorising rows and columns.
1. From Bohr to Quantum Mechanical Model |
The simple Bohr model of electrons in fixed circular orbits is replaced at A-level by the quantum mechanical model. An orbital is a region of space around the nucleus where there is a high probability of finding an electron, not a fixed path.
these sub-shells are arranged in principal quantum shells numbered n = 1, 2, 3 and so on.
2. Quantum Numbers and Orbital Labels |
Four quantum numbers describe the state of an electron: the principal quantum number n gives the shell, the orbital angular momentum quantum number l gives the sub-shell shape, the magnetic quantum number mₗ gives the orbital orientation, and the spin quantum number mₛ gives the electron spin direction.
0, 1, 2 and 3 correspond to s, p, d and f sub-shells. Sub-shell notation is written as nlˣ lectrons. For example, 2p⁴ means the second shell, p sub-shell, containing four electrons.
The table below summarises the number of orbitals and maximum electron capacity of each sub-shell.
|---|---|---|
| s | 1 | 2 |
| p | 3 | 6 |
| d | 5 | 10 |
| f | 7 | 14 |
3. Shapes of s, p and d Orbitals | s、p、d
An s orbital is spherical and can hold up to two electrons. A p sub-shell contains three dumbbell-shaped orbitals arranged at right angles to one another in space, giving a total capacity of six electrons.
d sub-shells contain five orbitals with more complex shapes, and they can hold up to ten electrons. The shapes of orbitals affect how atoms bond and how electrons are distributed around the nucleus.
4. Energy Levels and Sub-level Ordering |
In a hydrogen atom, all sub-shells in the same principal shell have the same energy. In multi-electron atoms, penetration and shielding effects cause sub-shell energies to split, so the 2s orbital becomes lower in energy than the 2p orbitals.
For neutral atoms, the approximate order of filling for the sub-shells needed at A-level is:
1s < 2s < 2p < 3s < 3p < 4s < 3d < 4p < 5s < 4d < 5p
This order follows the Aufbau principle, but there are important exceptions such as chromium and copper, which are more stable with a half-filled or fully filled d sub-shell.
5. Electron Configuration Notation |
A full electron configuration lists all occupied sub-shells. For example, oxygen, with atomic number 8, has the configuration 1s² 2s² 2p⁴.
Shorthand notation uses the previous noble gas in square brackets to represent the inner-shell electrons. Calcium is [Ar] 4s², which is much shorter than writing 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s².
For ions, electrons are added to or removed from the highest-energy occupied sub-shell. However, when transition metal atoms form positive ions, 4s electrons are removed before 3d electrons.
Fe: [Ar] 3d⁶ 4s²
Fe²⁺: [Ar] 3d⁶
Cu: [Ar] 3d¹⁰ 4s¹
6. Aufbau, Pauli and Hund |
The Aufbau principle states that electrons occupy the lowest available energy orbitals first. The Pauli exclusion principle states that no two electrons in the same atom can have the same set of four quantum numbers, which limits each orbital to two electrons with opposite spins.
Hund's rule states that electrons fill degenerate orbitals singly before pairing, and their spins remain parallel in the singly occupied state. This minimises electron-electron repulsion and explains the ground-state configuration of atoms such as nitrogen.
Nitrogen has the configuration 1s² 2s² 2p³, with three unpaired electrons in the 2p sub-shell. Chromium is [Ar] 3d⁵ 4s¹ rather than [Ar] 3d⁴ 4s² because a half-filled 3d sub-shell is more stable.
7. Blocks of the Periodic Table |
The Periodic Table is divided into blocks according to the sub-shell that is being filled. Groups 1 and 2 form the s-block, Groups 13 to 18 form the p-block, Groups 3 to 12 form the d-block, and the lanthanides and actinides form the f-block.
